    The Golden Globe folks really need to change their antiquated, discriminatory 51% English rule for the Best Picture category. This is an American film, by an American production company, with an American director (graduated from Yale, I might add), American actors, filmed in Oklahoma etc. Meanwhile British foreign films can be nominated for Best Picture - although NOT American - because they speak English. Ex. The Queen, Slumdog Millionaire, The King's Speech, The Pianist, and so much more. ...Oh, and also Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterd" was more than 50% in German and French, but it was nominated for Best Picture. So discriminatory.

    I watched Minari and the first impression was that this movie cannot be more than THE American story, a real story of immigrant family pursuing American dreams. This movie was fully funded by an American company, written and directed by American, acted by American (except for the mom and grandma) This movie got categorized as Foreign Language Film Award because it ended up written in Korean Language 51% Why does Foreign “Language” Film Award have to be exist anyway? The Golden Globes is for American tv shows and American films. Due to this weird rule, some “foreign” movies but written in English were able to win/nominated for other awards while this “American” movie wasn’t. “Minari” was the sole American movie vying for this year’s Globes foreign language category, nominated alongside “Another Round” (Denmark), “La Llorona” (Guatemala), “The Life Ahead” (Italy) and “Two of Us” (France). None of the nominees was permitted to enter the best motion picture drama or comedy races. I think it makes more sense the award should be changed to Foreign Film Award or just remove the category.

    just saw the film with my parents. i quite enjoyed that this movie focused more on the family immigrant experience and the innocence and sweetness of it without racism playing the main antagonist tearing the family apart. feel like there's enough movies and stories that cover that all too well these days, blaming such and such for such and such. i was super impressed by steven yeun as well. superb portrayal of the typical korean father. my parents wanted to see the film b/c of the grandma, who apparently is a famous korean actress from their youth.

  • @davidh7832
    @davidh7832 3 года назад +9

    Minari is a must see film. Anyone can learn many things about the American dream through this film, and the cast was spectacular in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed that the film had a mix of English and Korean dialogue, since I'm a Mexican-American young man trying to become fluent in Korean. Plus, I found this movie to be very similar to the experiences that Hispanic immigrants may have when starting a new life in the U.S. For example, the strong sense of taking care of the family, preserving cultural customs, using what you have, valuing hard work, and adapting to American society that may not understand all your customs. It reminded me so much of my grandparents when they came to our country, seriously. If you haven't seen this film yet, please do. I really hope they continue with a part 2 since the performances were that good. Give a thumbs up for part 2! lol

      It wasn't until Bruce made a few SUCCESSFUL films outside of Hollywood when he finally got to do his first film in America I think (Enter the Dragon). In one of the documentaries about him, he was caught in the middle between the U.S. and his Chinese background. He struggled in America and overseas since sometimes both cultures viewed him as different before he became a successful star.

    At '1.10', it was stated no Asian American had been nominated for an Oscar. This statement is incorrect. In the film Sayonara (1957), starring the late Marlon Brando, an Asian American by the name of "Miyoshi Umeki" won an Oscar for Best Supporting role in the film. To date, no Asian American has ever won an Oscar in an acting role. Miyoshi Umeki's was the only one so far (more than sixty-four ago now!).
