    This video makes me want an MKII (which in itself is something...) because it shows that Roland did listen and understand how people were using the SP404. Small things like roll back and skip back, show that Roland view users as more then milk cows. So many manufacturer seem to put all their efforts in marketing to trigger GAS and not to make good products. Most videos I've seen about the MKII (and I have seen a couple) did not talk about those small features which make a world of difference when using the thing.

    You can also use an Auto Pan with a 0° phase in Ableton for a pumping effect in a synth track :) not exactly the same as a compressor but you can quantize it and achieve pretty the same result without having a mute track for sidechaining

Mine is on its way after snagging the seemingly last one in the EU this month. Unfortunately, Just found out it doesnt do live looping really - or at least not very good presumably. :s hope Roland makes an update that would make live Looping easy as that is the biggest difference between the mk2 and all the other options as I see it, if it truly can't do it (well)

      Hello my friend! I actually got it again just because I loved the Habit pedal so much. I’m so smitten that, since it has many similar features, I wanted to give the blooper another try with a different mindset. I’ve been playing around with it as a delay instead of a looper and it’s been very fun! Also, I bought an external pedal to control the loop/tap tempo with my foot while I tweak with my hands and it’s made all the difference. If you do get a blooper, 100% invest in a pedal for it (I’m using boss fs-5U). Cheers!

    Hey there, Yesterday I wanted to see again your video on your thoughts on the OP1 field, but I just cannot find it! Did RUclips make you take it down or something?

    • @MidlifeSynthesist
      @MidlifeSynthesist  2 года назад +19

      Hello my friend!
      This is the first time I have taken down a video and I do not do so lightly.
      Though I have made “controversial” opinion pieces in the past, after thoughtful consideration, I felt it was the right thing to do.
      The whole OP-1 field thing got extremely toxic very fast, culminating in actual physical threats of violence towards a beta tester who was making op-1 field content on youtube. It’s a sad thing to see, and it’s not what we as a synth and music community should be about.
      While my letter did not call for such behavior, I do not want to be even remotely associated with such actions of anger and hatred. At the end of the day, it’s just a product, a device, not something that warrants so much bad blood, especially not towards someone who was just trying to share it with the rest of us and had done nothing to warrant such a violent reaction.
      Furthermore , one of my main gripes with the whole situation was that the people who put the OP-1 on the map where overlooked on the launch. However, in the following days I´ve seen posts by Red Means Recording where he admires the OP-1 Field and apparently does not feel slighted. Later on I learned that Cuckoo has been part of the Beta tester team and has been included in this project. With this information, I need to be humble enough to admit that I was wrong, and that therefore a big segment of the video is simply not true now.
      My video was bred out of a place of anger and frustration on my part. Both of these emotions are not conducive to the creativity and wholesomeness that I strive my channel to be known for. Both as a channel and as a person, they are not emotions that I want to share, be associated with, nor emotions that I want to project unto my viewers.
      I feel that what needed to be said was said and that with 50 thousand views, either TE saw it already or they weren’t going to. Keeping it online in light of all of these events just felt wrong, no matter how well the video itself was performing.
      I hope you understand my decision and want nothing but to continue to grow the channel as a place where we can share music ideas, share our love for the gear that we love and enjoy this amazing world of music making together.
      Your friend in music, always

      @@MidlifeSynthesist Don´t worry my friend, I completely understand what you meant with your video and I do now also understand why you take it down. At the end of the day is just an opinion, TE owes us nothing, the are free to charge whatever price they want or decide to become a luxury brand, but the more important thing is that we are always free to choose. Choose wisely and have fun making music as always. I also share your feeling of being left out by TE but I guess that´s life. Thanks for your vids and the effort that you make by doing them. @@MidlifeSynthesist That L-12 is the shizzy, definitely my next piece of kit. Watched many videos on it, including your After The Honeymoon vid. I've finally gotten to the point where 6 channels won't cut it. And even though I'm DAWless, I still want to record individual channels in case I do ever want to remix. So I need both a mixer and an interface with a decent amount of inputs. But this is a modest desktop studio, I don't want a mixer with a lot of inputs _and_ a separate interface with a lot of inputs, I want them all in the same box. You've helped bring clarity to so many of my gear decisions. Seeing your other videos about how the MPC is a no-brainer in nearly any setup (which I'm inclined to agree with!), I'm curious what value you see in the 404. I can see why you'd want to explore it as a RUclipsr, but as a musician, is there anything this devices gives you that the MPC does not? Technically, you can do all of this from inside the MPC, except maybe vinyl sim (which is coming in the 2.11 release anyway). Curious to learn from your perspective! Are you just using this because of the potential RUclips content, or would you use it in a dawless (or hybrid) setup somehow regardless, and if so, how, and why?

    I want to get more into making music, and the 404mk2 will be the centerpiece of my setup. I want to pair it with a keyboard, but Im confused... Some say I need a synth (I was originally just thinking a midi keyboard), but Id like to be DAWless as much as possible, so a midi keyboard wont work? Synth just seems so advanced :P So far my "studio" is just DJ turntable setup with Serato - but I want to make my own beats to scratch and rap over!

      I know it's been a year, but a midi keyboard on its own won't work. Check out the Volca Keys or the Korg Microkorg, they're fantastic and portable

      @@MidlifeSynthesist Really appreciate this response. I have the utmost respect for your bold stance in that video, and felt like it represented my thoughts exactly. I would agree that after all the events and growing toxic response in the wider community that it was a fair call to take that video down. However I think your stance was respectable and the criticism was carried out in a appropriate manner, many people (including myself) have felt angered and confused about this product. However those feelings should never warrant actions against beta testers or members of TE.
      Regardless, I’m not to fussed either way about the video been taken down, as it’s your video/opinion after all and you can do what you want with it. Thus, I need no understanding with your decision in this situation, just an avid fan of your work and opinions :)

      They definitely need more “work” to get there, but I guess the more capable the device, the more complex the workflow is. The SP404mk2 feels fresh and dynamic in that sense! And you are absolutely correct! The difference is in the feel and workflow rather than in the functionality or end result. Best analogy I can think of is cars. They all do the exact same function (take you from point A to B within the same speed laws, routes etc). The only real difference is the experience, but one might argue that the experience is the most important thing in the end🤟🏻 find what brings you joy and inspiration and use that😉Cheers my friend, thanks for watching🙏🏼

    What's up TMS! Kinda bummed I have to be your 421st Like on this video, but somebody's gotta be the one I guess! 😛 I barely use sampling at all so my experience is very limited, but I've yet to need a graphical representation of the sample waveform for any reason other than chopping off the beginning and end. For this reason, the blocky waveform gfx of the Deluge didn't seem like too far a step backward for me, the resolution seemed high enough for my purposes. In practice I also have a Rytm and I seem to prefer using it for editing my samples, not because of the screen, but because I'd rather trigger them with the Rytm and so why not record & edit them there too. (I generally don't loop samples, just use them as one-off's, and the Rytm's pads are perfect for this type of riffing, it has nothing to do with the Deluge's capabilities). And so I still haven't really tested my theory about the Deluge serving adequately as a primary sampler (for somebody who doesn't put very much emphasis on sampling). You do seem to have an opinion however lol! I know you _prefer_ something with a higher screen resolution, but would you go even further and say the Deluge grid as a sample editor is unworkable? Do you find it simply not as effective, or downright maddening? I guess I'm trying to get a sense of the _degree_ of your preference lol! Thanks buddy 😁

    I'm very disappointet by the audio quality. I know, it's a "lofi-device" but the aliasing is not acceptable in 2022 and from such a big company. All sounds like 30 or even less kHz sampling rate. I have to try it again with 48 kHz samples instead of 44.1 kHz, but even then it's a shame... And I think only if you used a SP before it's a nice workflow because it's an improvement of the predecessors, for me as a first time user i'm scratching my head all the time and all feels a little bit like 2005 ;)
    No play/stop or solo button, you can't exit record mode without stopping the sequence, no quantized sampling, no step editing, no chromatic playing while recording in the sequencer, ... Even though it's fun to play with and breaking a little bit the rules of normal producing. But I'm wondering how the people can play live with it or make multitrack recordings with it...

    • @happyjessus
      @happyjessus 2 года назад

      They don't.. they mostly use it as an fx unit in live situations and for making lo-fi beat loops for IG it has more than what you need actually. I am also waiting for mine to ship and to be honest I'm still not sure if I made the right choice. I love how you can fit it into any kind of setup, use it as a sampler, as a drum machine, as an fx unit, as a basic dj mixer, as a recorder etc.. it's really inspiring but at the same time I hope Roland addresses at least some of the issues you mentioned, if not all, on firmware updates.

      @@MidlifeSynthesist I really appreciate the thoughtful reply, and I understand what you're saying. I think many of us love Cuckoo and Red Means Recording, but, when all is said and done, Nothing you said - NOTHING, was out of line. If you take Cuckoo and RMR out of the equation, that still leaves the thousands of us the bought OP-1's and TE itself. Literally, thousands upon thousands of us who shelled out more than $1,000.00 ($1,200.00 in my case), and have waited TEN YEARS for some reasonable, essential upgrades to this device. We were sorely let down and offended. Surco's video (please, tell me it's still up), as well as Gabe's video, sums up nicely the issues with the Field and its absurd price point. So, SO many of us, the great majority, feel betrayed, upset and let down by TE's 1.) failure to add decent MIDI, an UNDO feature, etc, while simultaneously asking as much for the Field as one would pay for a SEQUENTIAL PRO 3, or a Moog Matriarch. There's clear validity there. Basically, TE inflicted nothing less than a WOUND to its thousands of fans, and that needs to be addressed. TE needs to address it, and certain members of the community are asking for that. Instead of responding and rethinking this travesty, they're stonewalling, and trying to do an "Emperor's New Cloths" on us with this Gaslight of a release. Here's what I'm saying: If a cause is just, and a terrorist/extremist happens to commit an act on behalf of that cause, that person, or that act does NOT make the just cause wrong, nor should it silence your voice in speaking for so, so many of us. Again, this whole thing is basically thousands of WOUNDED fans of TE literally CRYING OUT for some justice and fairness. Just because .001 percent of those people are violent nuts, doesn't mean the great majority should just fall silent and accept the brutal disregard shown by TE in its decisions. I will continue to appreciate your contributions and enjoy your channel, but I wish you had not felt the need to silence yourself because of someone else's extremist reaction. A large swathe of the synth community is hurt and let down by TE's ugly, brazen gambit here, and when you echo our feelings, you help us heal by letting us know we're not alone. Cuckoo and RMR are great at what they do, but don't mistake viewership with value of contribution. Your ability to articulate and discourse on the interface between the emotional and practical aspects of the synth journey is what makes your voice unique AND valid, and that's why it matters so much. Let it ring out.
