Great lesson thank you for your dedication. On a side note, I disagree that today there are more checks before posting a story than in the past, unfortunately many times news don't even pass the 2 source basic check. If you add that up to the "agenda" that REUTERS, AP, or any of the "REAL" news agencies have, the influence the main editor might have, the line the advertisers need, etc... It's getting harder and harder to get simple fact and science based information. We have to train people into scientific critical thought, and by this I don't mean one should think he knows more than a doctor and criticize everything, but if there is a study, go check who sponsored it and make the effort to investigate the connections. There is propaganda everywhere, learn to see what they are feeding you (the flavour of the month). Good luck.
