Once you get the first coals lit - use a fan to blow air on the pile of coals while you continously move the unlit ones up top of the lit area (like you do at 4:25). So much faster. I use to light up my small charcoal grill from cold to fully lit (where I can start grilling) in 5-6 minutes :)
Ride84XL I have used a fan... read me and a piece of cardboard before. I typically use the time to get my food seasoned and prepped, so I'm not in a rush.
My mom wants me to grill over the summer so grilling can almost be turned into a skill for me but I'm more of a Baker and this video was extremely helpful and I'm thinking about starting the grill without lighter fluid since I almost burnt the hairs of my arm yesterday.....
Lol don't be afraid of lighter fluid, you just can't use too much. All you need is a splash to wet the coals, less is more and patience is all part. Don't rush it to be a raging fire.

Pringles chips work well as charcoal starters. Just get 3 or whatever, light the corner of 1 and they burn like a candle

Just a suggestion sir if you have a handfan fan the coals so that it will speed up the lighting process just a little but not to much because it can remove your paper towel's fire on it(sorry for grammar)
When I filmed this video I didn't fan it because I wanted to see just how long it would take. But I usually do have a piece of cardboard that use from time to time to help stoke the coals! Thanks for watching and the suggestion!
My wife pours the grease from bacon, fired chicken and other foods into a metal coffee can, instead of putting them down the drain. She then uses it to start fires. Simply pour it on the coals or wood, the only flavor it will put off is bacon, or chicken. Not the smell of gas as lighter fluid does.

I used bacon grease and toilet paper. With a little fanning, the flames were high within 5 minutes.

Use wood grain alcohol or rubbbing alcohol instead of stinky old oil. Works great!

I always light a few chunks of wood then stack charcoal around it in a chimney. It's dry outside so I don't want any burning paper flying around. Takes a little while but works great.

I did it by splitting a 2x4 and making a mini camp fire. Your way seems much easier.

I use my cleanup soaked greasy paper towels and store them in a gallon zip lock bags and keep it in the freezer. Just pull one out and light.

How long does it take before they're ready to cook? Do they have to be grey? Also...I would move the grill away fromthe house. Here on Long Island there is a 10 feet from the house law.
This way will definitely take longer, this is meant to be a last resort means of getting the charcoal started. It may take 30 minutes to get going or more. Yes indeed you need to wait until it ashes over because that's when you know it's getting hot.
There is more of an gap than it seems but 10 feet seems extremely excessive, I'm just careful with the fires.

I am having a barbie Friday at my work and I am in charge of the barbie.
Its 2 grill bbq 1st grill for the coal and the second grill for the food but it says do not put the coal on the bottom of the dome only on the 1st grill why is this.

OK so I think I found a picture of what you are using. So firstly, I'd call horizontal parts, grates or racks that's part of what threw me off the grill is the whole thing. some loss in translation I know, lol. So on the lower grate you put the coals and they should be slightly raised to allow for better air flow. If you put them on the bottom of the grill the ash from when they get going will put them out and make it harder for you to cook.

I guess the ol paper fan method then...or one of those ol fireplace bellows if you can find one. But trust me, ive used a hair dryer many times to make a HUGE pile of red hot coals before.
This video was really just meant to be a proof of concept that you can light charcoal without any fancy tools, that being said I never expected this video to reach as many people as it has. I have gotten SO many different suggestions as to how to do it better, yours included, and I thank you.

Yes all the time. I mix charcoal and wood chunks or spits to give me heat and good smoke flavor from the wood.

Getting wood started can be a little tricky. I'm sure you would be able to get your wood going it just might take some doing.
I use dried orange peel.... peel orange leave on side - once hard and brittle it then can be used
Interesting would love to try that, though my wife would never let me leave an orange peel sit around long enough for it to dry out. 😂🤣
What do you use for grill gloves?
So my wife bought me a pair of gloves that were Charbroil branded a while back but I have found that a decent pair of MIG or Stick welding gloves will do the trick and save you a few bucks. Here are some I found on Amazon under $20 amzn.to/3ln3F9I they even boast the dual purpose welding and for BBQ.

Unfortunately this grill has pretty much been retired. Smoking things on this grill was VERY difficult and because it is designed to cook hot and fast it really doesn't "smoke" things well which need a lower temp.
SDSBBQ thanks for the reply Buddy.. I’ll have to see what I can do as I don’t have the funds for anything else atm.. I’ve modded it with gasket so was hoping to try indirect smoking like a Weber?? Happy with it as a grill in the interim !!!
All of the air that gets in around the inlets is the problem. you can by all means cook indirectly by making a small fire on one side of the grill, and adding a water pan to help keep temps down as well. My suggestion is to make the fire on the opposite side of the chimney, so the heat have to travel past your food to exit the grill. If you search indirect vs direct in my videos I have a video talking about it using this grill.

We use a propane pear burner.
This was done more as a proof of concept that there are other ways to get your charcoal going. I too primarily use a torch to get my fires going.

I read and try to reply to each and every comment, I have had that grill for about 6 or seven years I can't remember where I got it from. It was either Lowes or Home Depot, it is a "Master Forge" branded grill.

I wrap the paper towel use like three or 4 the long way and put it in a old jar or a bowl and some it really good then you. Pour ur coals in form the piramid an the middle of the piramid open the middle of the piramid an put ur paper towel in an d light it when u seethatis lightin really good form the piramid again brother much love from Texas good cooking brother 😋😋😋

Just be careful... more often than not you just can't "add" coals. Maybe look into getting a smoke box to add to your propane grill.
But you DID use lighter fluid, from you lighter... like 4 times at least.

Ok cool method but it takes too long. You can use your method and buy this BBQ blower off eBay it cost less than 3bucks it will start that fire up I'ma heart beat

SDSBBQ it's cool though I never would have thought about that. I have been in the situation where I had no fluid. But forreal that blower would be perfect just to have in case you need it. I made a fire with it from a tiny lit piece of wood

dont people have hair dryer in their house, i have been using that for 40 years and it does it in 2 mins tops no smoke at all....
I have a hair dryer... Well my wife does.
1. she wouldn't appreciate it smelling like smoke when she goes to use it after I get the grill going... and
2. I don't have power close enough to where that grill is on the side of the house.
you can get one works from lighter, £5 or portable fan with battery, saves time and effort...
This video was really just a means to get you out of a jam one time, I wouldn't start my grill this way normally.

Maybe you missed it but I did this cause I ran over my charcoal chimney and dind't have any lighter fluid. This really was a proof of concept that has seemed to take off. This was never meant to be a means to start your grill every time. Just something to do if and or when in a pinch.
Okie doke. Still, I think I'm spoiled because of the chimney. They are such a great tool to have and your food doesn't taste full of fuel.
If your food tastes like lighter fluid then your using too much. Lighter fluid should be used like salt.
A hair blower aleays does the job in less than 3 minutes!!!
