You could totally turn this into a series, there’s so many “interesting” canadian shows, especially cartoons. Miss spiders sunny patch friends, mole sisters, George shrinks, seven little monsters, jacob two two, babar, caillou, carl squared, braceface, stoked (made by the creators of 6teen) and so many more
as a lifelong beach local, the jellyfish sting episode of Stoked was genuinely the moment I realise I *might* be getting a little too old for certain cartoons. And miss spider's sunny patch being Canadian makes way more sense
Never saw Stoked, but I remember one summer seeing a banner saying "Up next: Stoked" at the bottom of the screen whenever I was watching an episode of Total Drama World Tour.
lol You've only scratched the surface: - *Lexx* : A dead man, a janitor, a sex slave, and robot head fly around the universe in the most advanced spaceship, which happens to look like a dragonfly. - *Cybersix* : A woman cross-dresses as a man during the day and struggles to find acceptance, but at night she fights a Nazi mad scientist. - *History* *Bites* : A TV show that approaches pre-1900s history as if talk shows and TV news were there to report/discuss it. - *Prisoners* *of* *Gravity* : Features interviews with sci fi and fantasy authors, comic book artists, and the like. Each episodes revolves around a theme or trope and the interviews are conducted as if the host is trapped on a space station orbiting Earth. - *Maniac* *Mansion* : If "The Adams Family" was built around a mad scientist. Supposedly it's based on the video game of the same name. - *Angela* *Anaconda* : A kid's cartoon with a bizarre, cut-out art style.
Cybersix was my shit as a kid!! And i've only watched the 1st season of lexx but it's fun 😂 Mystery Hunters and Prank Patrol were also some other shows my brother and I watched
it’s funny how many shows we watched in the states were canadian because i’m pretty sure most of us didn’t even realize lol. for whatever reason i was never scared of mr meaty ? i remember liking it even though i was EXTREMELY easy to scare as a child ??
some of the dialogue from tdi was censored in the us! i didn’t know this bc i’m american and all available (legal) versions of the show that i could watch had the american dialogue, but in my older teen years i rewatched it on youtube and saw a lot of the original dialogue. some risqué exchanges were watered down for the US. specifically i remember harold’s love letters to lashawna said she had “a booty as luscious as an apple” in the canadian, and that line was changed to “a kick butt attitude like mine” for the US! great video, i remember some of these shows and loved learning abt the others!
I grew up mostly with Canadian shows, especially Teletoon. I never realized they were "risque". It's pretty tame, as tame as the Simpsons. However, I remember being disgusted by a scene from Ren and Stimpy (The one where Ren got bitten by a mosquito), it's worse than anything shown in any of our "unhinged" Canadian shows.
7:57 a LOT of random bits of dialogue were censored in the American run of TDI, ranging from Lindsay's absolute smackdown of Heather which was a long bleep in the Canadian run and something like "selfish, mean, no-good, bully of a girl" in the American version, to flippant things like the word "stupid" often being changed to "foolish" - my brothers and I would actually go online and watch the Canadian releases of the episodes because we thought they were funnier.
As a kid, one of my favorite canadian tv shows was Stickin' Around. I really liked how the artstyle makes it look like a kid's drawing. It also hits home in the weirdness factor, considering there was a character who dragged her dog around on a leash, refusing to acknowledge that it was dead. A couple other shows i remember were This is Daniel cook and This is Emily Yeung, The Secret World of Benjamin Bear, and Survive This
This is super interesting, Canada has some of the freest censorship laws so banned media is basically non existent here from what I've read, even the US which doesn't usually ban things anymore does censor a lot in some places. Didn't really watch many canadian shows after I turned about 6 but some of the CBC kids programming has stuck with me for one reason or another, namely the Doodlebops and the big comfy couch which I can't speak for the content for but had some interesting character designs. Shoutout to Atomic Betty for being a pseudo-magical girl, the atomic betty to madoka magica pipeline is real.
holy fuck I haven't thought of atomic betty since like 2005 when my cousin corey punched me in the face in a hotel marriott for switching off TSN sportscentre to watch it
This was nostalgic af. A while ago I was telling my partner about how a lot of the weird TV shows that I remember from the 00s were Canadian and I blanked on a few lol. A part 2 for this video would be cool!
This gave me a massive flood of nostalgia, I'm remembering all the insanely weird shows I'd watch as a kid, like Ripping Friends, Mega Babies, Angela Anaconda, the list goes on...Personally I'd love a part 2! As a neat side note, my aunt actually worked a bit on Life with Derek, though I forget what exactly her role was...
would love to see you talk more about obscure canadian shows. i'm an australian and we got heaps of canadian cartoons on our state owned broadcaster the ABC. we got total drama, 6teen, stoked, atomic betty, dragon booster, storm hawks. all free to air instead of requiring cable like in the states. it was mad
Well.. i would dig a part 2 😅. My favorite canadian shows where "the odessy" watching it as an adult showed me just how much i missed in it as a youngin. Todays special... it was fun. I dont know if you remember "Zed". Would vome on cbc late on the weekends. Of artists indie work.. i used to love that show. I kiss when canada tv would bleed over to the us. Trailer park boys was a good time! I didnt know it went on as along as it did. Thanks for sharing these gems.
ahh this was such a great video, i didn't even know about half of these despite living here!! i would looove to see a part 2. shoutout to mamma yamma ❤
oh and if youre going to do a part 2 please include big top academy, a fairly recent kids show about children attending a circus academy and there's also magic. and instead of oh my god they say 'oh my circus'
Craziest thing I ever saw in life with Derek was the episode where Casey redecorates the living room and the guys are mad and Casey says something about how boys and girls are different and Derek responds with "Yeah, I found that out the fun way on the old couch" just wild for a supposed kids show. And speaking of Michael Seater and weird fever dream shows I gotta go with Strange Days at Blake Holsey High
I’ve recently been rewatching 6teen (as an American) and it’s an absolute forgotten favorite. I never realized it was made by the TDI team until a few years ago, but they were both childhood necessities.
i remember building one of those nickelodeon slime volcano sets while watching mr meaty and my dad was watching me in absolute horror at the horrific spectacle of it all
6 teen was just the tip of the iceburg of weird 2000's Canadian shows, being ian and ivan the yukon come to mind, league of super evil if you wanted to dip into 2010s
That was a really good video great work! But I feel like you missed the weirdest and most unhinged Canadian show that was shown before the national news on cbc. Kenny vs Spenny
MR. MEATY WAS A KIDS SHOW? It ran on Teennick where I live, so I always assumed it catered to adolescents. Tbf, Teennick did air shows and episodes that weren't dubbed yet

Very interesting look at some shows. I don't mind weird shows. I like the Soup Opera French food (veg and fruit usually) stop motion shorts (took me a bit to uncover that and remember it was a thing) even. Many countries have their good and odd but interesting shows. Canada has some good animated shows even if the dialogue may be what it is in certain ones Canadian or American. I don't watch TV anymore of course and I forget a few but still an interesting look. I think I saw some via ABC or so during certain blocks but don't remember enough about them. Other than that the odd Disney shows but usually ABC had the Canadian animated shows on them or Aussie or New Zealand kids animated or live action shows. 6teen heard other Canadian RUclipsrs cover but hadn't heard of the others you covered. They seem pretty interesting even for being odd I think that's the charm in some ways.
By the way Total Drama was a hit on brazilian Cartoon Network (cable paid signal) and it was broadcasted / re-distributed into other TV Channel (non paid n open signal)... Of course with the local dub they did more cuts and censorship 😅
had not heard about the toddler total drama island. that's very weird. og total drama was good though I think. as for other canadian shows, I think immediately of detentionaire, which I really liked. probably deserves a rewatch from me sometime. criminal that no one I talk to ever knows about detentionaire
as a hardcore weeaboot, this topic is extremely relevant to my interests. some of those shows that only exist because of the cancon laws are next level. shouts out to twitch city
#LIFEWITHDEREJ wasn't even on that late it was on like #8PM on Sunday I remember cuz I was playing my #PSPVduringvthe last season it's free on #RUclips
Living north of big brother can add a cherry on top to the harsh winters and the disconnect between “large country” versus the reality. Which is that most of the population is along the border and in two provinces.
Mr Meaty was wacky haha... aa another weird canadian ive been trying to guess where you are from by your accent and i have come up with : Charlottetown PEI... am i close?
I saw the cannibalism and tapeworm episodes of Mr. Meaty on a department store display TV as a kid and thought I imagined the whole thing for years
Can’t imagine seeing that as a child omg ew
@@BeeGay420me having seen it as a child and feeling physically ill 😅

ed edd & eddy was my weird canadian cartoon growing up
Didnt get too many Canadian shows here in the UK but one I remember cropping up in the early 2000’s was Big Wolf On Campus.
Kenny vs Spenny made me the man I am today.
There’s this Canadian cartoon called Braceface. Absolutely wild

I think the most unhinged moment of 6Teen for the US was the fact it premiered with the zombie Halloween episode

No mention of Degrassi or Crash Canyon? 💔
I was terrified of nanalan as a kid hahaha
