I’m a sucker for finished MDF ❤ and I like how determined you were to make it the same width as the old one 😂. I bought just the long guide chute and built a board with a fixed fence with which I tapped two nuts into and a second adjustable fence that cut two slots into with a counterbored slot to house hex drive cap bolts. This way I was able to get close with the fixed fence and was able to dial in the adjustable one to get perfect square, swap for a miter fence, expose more fence, etc… The nice thing is that the 24” track gives me a really nice long chute. I got the prebuilt one also that has the track and Veritas fence as a gift and it’s awesome, but I wouldn’t have paid what they want for it.
First! Excellent job sir! I’m gonna sit down and watch the rest of it this evening but from the first three minutes it looks beautiful! Congratulations on 1000 subs Brother! Make On!
I also had the same problem with the instructions and put the hole in the wrong place. But here's the deal--- as a less confident maker, I assumed it was somehow my mistake and it took me awhile to get to the place you did, to mark for the holed where it should be using the miter fence. I won't be so afraid of my own intuition from now on.
Sometimes you just have to go for it. Believe me, there was a lot of head scratching where I was trying to figure out where I messed up that didn't get included in the video. The thing that helped me is working on being okay with starting over. It's pretty freeing.
Maybe I missed it, but… What was that finish you put on the MDF? And was that only one coat (and cutout subsequent coats from the video)? Whatever it was, that brush seemed to hole a lot of material before dipping back into the jar.
That was shellac. If I am remembering correctly it was a 1lb cut of dewaxed shellac. There were several coats. It was so thin that by the time I got one coat on it was immediately ready for the next coat.
I wish you'd showed what's on the other side of that plane. It looks like some kind of plastic piece, but all I can do is assume since we only saw the bottom and the other side of the plane. I don't know how the plane side of things is actually working.
The plane at 12:20? That is a Vertias bevel up jointer that I added a scale to in order to make the side flat. It has a protrusion on the side for mounting a fence. I wanted it flat. There is more detail on it in this video: ruclips.net/video/R0Th9-v_ppQ/видео.html Thanks!
Lots to enjoy with your videos. But one thing I particularly enjoy is seeing you make the same mistakes I make #%@&*!!! Thank you for not editing those out. It helps me overcome my perfection OCD, which keeps me from making more stuff.
You're welcome! 😆 Truth be told there are many more that are edited out because they do not translate well to camera or mess with the flow of the video. I have the same OCD when it comes to getting things perfect. Now, I look at mistakes as a learning opportunity in hiding them. That has helped me to keep moving forward with projects. In general though, we always see our mistakes in a finished piece. Other people won't. Make on!
@@EricMeyerMaker I've ordered the 24" after much deliberation. I figured I might be able to for jointing as well for small parts... Even though I have a jointer... I don't know can always trim it down for the extra 8 quid 😬
@@MrDancingBishop Not going to lie I saw the capacity of the finished shooting board at the end and thought how useless it would be (other then for very small parts). Look how much more capacity his old shooting board had. Definitely go the longer track.
@Scott Gates It will do 6" wide boards without issue. Boards wider than that I find it faster to put them in the vise and free hand the ends square. I have not caught myself wishing I had a longer shooting board, but it just depends on what you are making and how you want to make it.
Had exactly the same issue with the hole in the wrong place. Good work Veritas!!!!
It is always an inspiration to see how/that you get things done. Crank things out. So to speak. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!

I really should not have shellaced the mdf. It gets a little slick. Lesson learned.
Great job man! Amazing craftsmanship as always!
Thank you!

Quick on the draw! I was for sure it was bot spam I was going to have to remove. Just saw you hit monetization. That is excellent!
It is so soothing to finally hear your voice sir. Lol. Thanks man.
That's a super nice piece of kit.
Thank you! I put off making it for far too long.

Great video! I’m constructing my own now. Is the confusion on the second fence hole because the diagram reads 1-7/32” but kinda looks like 17/32”?
Thanks! It has been a few years since I made this video. I'm not sure where the confusion was anymore.

@@EricMeyerMaker ....by the way.....did Veritas correct the hole mistake in their directions?
I am not sure. Probably should email them.
Eric you stud, great video. How do you like the shooting board after a year?
I still like it. I'm considering modifying it to make it a ramped shooting board, but that really is just out of curiosity than any deficiencies.
Do you have separate fences for miters?
I flip the existing fence end for end when I want to do miters. Additional fences for the other angles is a good idea.
Are you happy with the short track or do you regret not getting the larger track?
So far I am happy with it. On larger boards I find it is easier to free hand plane the ends square.

Great work, I am about to make the same. Were you able to confirm with LV that they had that one dimension wrong on the instructions?
Thanks!
I never followed up with LV. I ended up putting the fence down and used that to mark where the holes needed to be.
