This Productivity Keyboard has a MAJOR FLAW - Razer Pro Type Review

  • There is a lot to love about the Razer Pro Type productivity keyboard, noise is not one of them.
This $140 keyboard features a solid, full size design with the ability to pair to up to five independent devices - three via bluetooth, one with the included USB dongle, and one with the high quality braided USB-C to USB-A cable. The key layout is very traditional and the keys feature a soft touch plastic which is very pleasing to use.
The tactile, orange mechanical switches are made by Razer. A similar model keyboard, the Razer Pro Type Ultra, is also available which features Razer's linear, yellow switches. If you want to pick one of these up for yourself, check out the Amazon Affiliate links below, but also check out my drawback considerations before you make your purchase.

There are four major drawbacks for the Razer Pro Type. The first one surrounds the noise. In a productivity environment, these mechanical switches are simply too loud. Check out the latter portion of the video where I test various simulated working environments to see if the keyboard noise is problematic.
Other than noise, there is no Function Lock available, a feature which many people rely on in order to maintain peak productivity. There are also issues with pairing lag. First, when switching devices, the pairing takes too long. Second, the keyboard is forced to go to sleep after 15 minutes. This, combined with the slow re-pairing means that you'll spend a lot of time waiting for your keyboard to connect, reconnect, or wake up.
If you want to see another productivity keyboard option, my go-to keyboard for years has been the Logitech MX Keys. You can see my review video below.

I keep wanting to listen to you, great review! Ive been working with the Logitech K380 and the Dell KM120w keyboards, which have both spoilt me with their dead silence and quick pairing. I keep wanting mechanical keyboards but the noise keeps me away!

It's quite loud stock, and it does have a metallic ping. But after some lube, it's pretty much as quiet as a mechanical keyboard can be.

just bought this keyboard and I 100% notice the metallic ping back when typing. It gets fixed when I have the keyboard lying flat down on my desk, but I find that it's more ergonomic when propped up, which makes the sound worse. Have you tried dampening the keys at all with lube or dampening material?

Main issue I have is the normal "Razer random" disconnects when in general use of the keyboard. No other wireless devices ever have an issue and 20-60 dollar wireless keyboards from China work and never do it. It is not Synapse as I use it on Linux (also does it on Windows), so it is a hardware issue.
Razer's terrible wireless implementation ruins what would have been an awesome keyboard.

I can't download the app due to my company's IT restrictions, can I turn off the light of the keyboard from the keyboard itself? Or i need to download the app to do this. I don't need a keyboard light since it is a work keyboard. Also how long does the battery last for a single charge.
    Thank you

      Yes, it's FN + F11
Battery life has been piss poor for me, it's advertised as somewhere around 30 hours with the back light off if I recall correctly. You should get the Ultra model.

Idk why I did but I accidentally turned on some kind of function lock on mine. I was messing with the function keys because even after all this time, I've never really used them and then I noticed that their uses had been inverted. FN + F11 put Chrome into fullscreen instead of lowering brightness

I've been using this keyboard for months and most unplesent things is I can only set 15 min for inactive time. After 15min inactive, keyboard was into sleep mode and took a bit longer time to reconnect other than keyboard.( I also using keychron). U need hand rest because its higher than other keyboard otherwise your wrist will be pain after few hour of using. Only limited function to control the light setting rather than other razer keyboard. I also have another razer black window keyboard but this so called "Pro Type" is most stupid keyboard I ever had.

my Pro type keyboard is very shock sensitive. When i hit a key a little bit harder, it's immediately interrupted. This just takes less than a second and it's back. Nevertheless it's very annoying. Anyone else have this problem and maybe solved it?

If that's the regular Pro Type (not Ultra), then I don't think it works via USB 100%. The Ultra does, though. I had the Pro Type, until the power connection went wonky. Return procedure was horrible, with over 30 emails back and forth, plus uploaded videos to prove it was malfunctioning. They sent a Pro Type Ultra to replace it, so I have something to compare to. Overall I really like the design on both - the backlighting is really nice, letters are super crisp with a nice font, I personally like the feel of the keys and don't mind the noise, but each model has quirks that make them unpleasant. The Pro Type (as you noticed) times out, which is a real pain in the butt when your PC logs off and you have to log back in - you have to hit multiple keys to first wake up the keyboard, then bring up the login window, then log it. The Pro Type Ultra is able to work via USB so it never times out as long as it's plugged in and the keys are quieter, but then they went and made the F keys default to the media/settings functions and you have to press the FN button to use F keys in various software. My Pro Type Ultra has key spamming issues on both the upper row of numbers and the number keypad, so basically making it unusable in software like Quickbooks where you have to check and correct entry after entry. There's no way I'm going through that return procedure again, so I decided to switch to a DasKeyboard now. I need to be able to work at my computer - not deal with constant issues. Oh, and did I mention that autoinstaller that pops up every few weeks to get you to install the Razer Synapse software? That's nuts.

I have/had the pro type. I RMA'd it today because of spamming. Hoping the procedure will be quick and easy. You are right the Pro Type does not have a wired option, it's only 2.4ghz or Bluetooth. With regards to the timing out. You can change the timing, I did this, but it means the battery does not last more than a few days

The keyboard is total disappointment. It constantly types mulltiple letters (2x, 3x and even more!), lose signal (BT or 2.4Ghz doesn't matter), discharge even if you don't actually use it. All these problems make it totaly useless so the noize is far from the worst issue. I have Logitech super light mouse that works like a charm, so now want to buy G915 keyboard.
