I still remember seeing this theatrically and the moment where McGill yells "WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE" the entire audience jumped in their seats. One of my favorite movie moments.
Did anyone else sense that the tobacco company lawyer thought all this was a big joke? I sure do, he smirked and lightly chuckled before Motley nailed him to the wall. ' Screw your rights, what about your products victims rights that are dead or slowly dying b c of your lies? But knowing how corruption works they probably don't care about all that, it's the big payday that matters to them, so saying all that would be wasted energy.
I’ve had stretches where I’ve just sat and replayed that moment five of six times in a row. One of the great angry yells, up there with Mac Davis in North Dallas Forty: “SHUT the f-- up! Nobody talks in this f--- huddle ‘cept me!!”
In the real deposition transcript, Motley didn't take any crap from the tobacco lawyers either. For instance, early on, in response to those lawyers hounding him, Motley said: "Well, you have gone 15, and you promised me 10. I will be patient for a little while, but I'm not a very patient man. My middle name is not Joe."
FnDan9 This guy had no more soul than B & W imo. This whole event never should've occured, the secrecy the lies the cover ups, destroying a person over a costly lie or secret is Not morally acceptable! Way too many lives have destroyed or snuffed out over secrets or lies! Motley should've ignored the whole objection speech and Wigand should've spoken up too! Fuck the ' we have rights here' excuse, I have no patience for it in many circumstances. Motley was a lot more tactful then that guy deserved, esp after the smirk! Character Bruce McGill as Motley I haven't seen into much, but liked what I have. The other guy Wings Hauser, always plays a snarky jerk from what I've seen, which sadly isn't much. I'm not sure I wanna see his other stuff either.
Peter Hardie From what I understand no one on set ever found the staples after they popped out of his stomach. It's been estimated that at the speed they traveled the staples reached the outer atmosphere of the earth in less than 30 seconds. The staples were last measured 36 degrees north/northeast of Jupiter on a collision course with a black hole in our galaxy, where they'll eventually merge with the black hole and rip space a new asshole, almost as big as the one ripped on Brown and Williamson's lead defense attorney.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Everything in this scene is done to the smallest detail, the semi-optics in the cinematography is incredible, it conveys all the general tension of the story told in the film. I never studied cinema academically, I'm just a lover of dramatic cinema, but of the many feature films I've watched, few have the perfectionism that this masterpiece has.
@@libby5623Thanks for the compliment. "Mississippi Burning" is an excellent movie, I've watched it a few times, but now I'm going to review it after your tip. Another movie that is impeccable in this regard is "Cries and Whispers" 🙂

One of the greatest shouting confrontations in film history. The Insider has at least three. McGill is so grounded and authentic it stills us. In the theater I applauded.
I loved this shouting. Whole movie was so tense. I actually love watching George Clooney films, just waiting for him to start confrontation, because you think he is shouting, but he is so angry, and forceful with his speech, in a more reserved tone, but after you feel like he's been yelling at you the whole time. He does out at a Volume 3, but feels like 10!
Such a badass scene! Bruce McGill is one of my favorite "oh, THAT guy" actors, and he ALWAYS delivers, going all the way back to watching him on MacGyver as a kid. This scene always makes me cheer. Total boss.
Absolutely.. Another Chris Cooper albeit Cooper has at least had a couple of decent roles. Both hugely underestimated 'oh hims' (love that expression !)
Two classic character actors! Bruce McGill vs Wings Hauser! Epic! True movie fans will know how epic it is to see two underappreciated character actors going mano a mano in a big budget Michael Mann film none the less.
Motley was a force in the real deposition. In the real transcript, after a tobacco lawyer made a series of objections, he said: "Sir, I'm not under oath, and I'm not answering any questions. When you have your chance at the witness, you can certainly ask him questions that are appropriate, and I'll object."
One of the best directed and acted scenes in movie history. Seriously. It's just a small part in the movie but one of the most powerful. Unfortunately it doesn't get much attention.
I think it's because Russell Crowe was so excellent in his role, no one gave a damn about anything else. He was the acting powerhouse of this film!! Carried it. So the parts that get most attentions are the ones Crowe is involved in.

Love this scene, but always had a particular soft spot for the scene just preceding it. With Crowe standing on the beach contemplating the testimony, then taking the drive to the court room with no sound and just that wonderful soundtrack (Gustavo Santaloallas guitar piece).
This movie is incredible and Bruce McGill nails it here. Can you believe this is the same guy that was in Animal House? He's probably had the best career of any of the Frat. If you haven't seen this, watch it! True story about a huge topic.
I haven't seen this movie in years but I always keep coming back to this particular scene. I'm glad others see it too. Mahalo Bruce McGill for this memorable acting! Oscar worthy.
If his screen time had been just a little longer he might well have scored a nomination. The Insider had so many other potential Oscar roles (Pacino, Plummer) that there wouldn’t have been any left for other movies.
So many great, little-noticed moving parts in this scene. Masterfully-crafted, from mcgill’s arm movements and posture, to wings’ hand gestures and facial reaction, not to mention the decrescendo where mcgill’s character calmly walks back to the witness and continues. You see some great audience member (extras) reactions; the court recorder is even perfect.
So truly is! Not to even mention the fact that we have Pacino as lead. His eyes alone speak volumes for the severity of situation his character's going through.
Probably because it's Mann's hardest picture to follow. Not because it isn't a great film, but others prefer "Heat" and "Collateral" because of the action sequences, where this is just a straight up drama, but it's my favorite of his filmography. The acting in this movie is impeccable.
