  • Hello Pen People!
    I’ve got a fun little pen for you today. This is the Faber Castell Grip, the budget offering in their line of (in my opinion) surprisingly costly pens. The Faber Castell nib is a bit of a legend in the fountain pen community. Is it as good as I’ve heard? Check it out!
    Here is a link to the pen:

    This pen looks really interesting! I may have to check it out. The box looks like something a pet rock would be housed in.

    I have been considering purchasing this pen but wished to see a review with it being used on paper. I purchased a Faber-Castell Loom some years back and really wanted to like it, but the sloping metal grip was too difficult to hold on to, so I ended up selling it. This pen looks a lot more comfortable to write with. Thanks for this great review!

    • @stepheninks

      Thanks! I didn’t really care for the look of the loom myself, so this was my first Faber Castell purchase. I am told that the Hexo is also nice.

    God bless you Stephen, this came out after i already fell in love with the FC Loom, the uniqueness draws me to it & the quality nib just cinched the deal to keep it, i even had multiple colors at one point. I'm glad you like the Grip, although i think the Hexo is next up in price, somewhere around $35 or so, Loom tends to loom around $50-60, pun completely intended.

      Ah, I forgot about the Hexo! That’s a new one from them, isn’t it? I kind of think I might like that one as well.
      Puns will be encouraged. I wrote you a letter with this pen, by the way.

    We like the size of the Faber-Castell Neo Slim, but that particular nib/feed seems more finicky about inks since some inks tend to dry start

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  Год назад

      The Neo does have a nice profile, and I like the clip. But I don’t know if it would be too thin for me.

    I think that "basket weaving" pattern is simply a/your form of hatching for shading. At least, that's what I'm drawn to guess. The lines don't cross over, you're not using dots or scribbles, and it isn't blended out smooth. So, that's my best of guesses. 😂
    As for the pen itself, I think white pens are cursed to be dirty, stained, and ruined by ink. I think it's a neat idea for a pen, but there's something missing for me. Maybe it has too much of that "disposable ballpoint style" that I'm not interested in it. That springiness of the nib is something to be sought after, though.
    One last note, your passive humor in the video today was great. 😂 I was done at the "i won't name names" and then the "Actually it was the Kaweco Sport" popped up. LOL. So true. You call them out.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  Год назад +2

      Yeah, it’s a type of hatching. Most ways of adding value to a pen and ink drawing involve some kind of hatching. I definitely get what you mean about this pen. I like the nib and the feed. The rest of it… is a huge MAYbe.
      Kaweco, I owe you nothing.

  •  Год назад

    Now that's interesting... All Kawecos I have came with 1-2 empty cartridges together with the ink one. They were fully functional cartridges, so you can fill them up with a syringe. Do you think that could go down to reseller/distributor?
    Thanks to your video I decided to buy and try one of these. I was hesitant because it has the same look as their school pencils, and while they're not _bad_ they're not as great as Faber-Castell can go. After all, their main goal with their school line is "sturdy cheap & attractive" so kids will use it the whole year.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  Год назад +1

      I bought this pen off Amazon, and the way that they run their platform, sometimes I’m not even sure who the reseller is. Maybe there are some inconsistencies. I’m starting to buy more from actual pen shops these days. It is t actually that much more expensive anyway.
      I’m impressed with this pen, but I’d be the first to admit, the design presentation is less than stunning. It’s a good place to start for people who want to try out Faber Castell’s nibs but can’t afford the more expensive offerings (that brand gets really expensive really quick for some reason).

    •  Год назад

      @@stepheninks Yes, Faber-Castell fountain pens is a weird place. F-C in general is a great brand with very fair prices and you can find it _everywhere_ in Germany. The fountain pens tho... I didn't even know they had fountain pens until recently, and I lived 2 years in Germany!

    Great video. I have one of these with ink stains on lower part. I tried alcohol and even acetone. The stain persists. I have it in the rose color and the ink is Diamine hope pink. Any advice appreciated. Thanks 🙏🏻

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  Год назад +1

      In my experience, Diamine inks go a bit hard on staining. I’m worried to recommend any cleaning method, as certain chemicals might damage the plastic. Best bet I think is a mild soap mixture and a lot of elbow grease. My section eventually returned to normal color just from regular use. Hopefully the same will be true for you.

    I was wondering if you would do a series of pens from around the world? We know japan china germany but are there any hidden gems being made in other countries? Just a thought...good vid as usual.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  Год назад

      I think that’s a cool idea, and I actually do actively look for pens made in other countries. It’s hard to find unique countries, though. A lot of pens come from either Germany, Japan, or China. I have some from the US, from India, and I know there are brands that make pens in Italy, South Korea, England, and France. Some of those companies actually farm out the manufacture of said pens to a certain other country (and I’ll bet you can guess which one).
      I’ll need to do some research before I can make this happen :)

    would you know any fountain pen bodies that can take zebra g nibs and can be used with a converter?

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  Год назад +2

      The Jinhao x450 and x750 can do that. I think you need to look for something that has a size 6 nib, and you’re in business.
      Word of caution however… you should remove and clean the g nib (maybe even replace?) regularly. Those nibs aren’t built like fountain pen nibs, so they tend to rust, and can ruin your feed.
