I just wanted to relate to you that I’ve chosen you amongst the many really good piano teachers out there on RUclips because you feel like a kindred soul your voice is kind and you relay the material right at the level that I am needing it.
Hey Tony. I've been watching lots of your videos lately and I just wanted to say that as a guitarist I'm learning so much from your videos. You are an amazing teacher!
What a beautiful sound has this piano , just to hear it is wonderful . Thank you very much superb choice !!! Of songs to demonstrate what is altered scale !
This is great! I would like to note, that for me the theoretical explanation that sounds the most accurate to my ears with respect to the sound most people get out of it, is that it's playing a minor scale with a flat 2nd, and with both the raised 7th and natural 7th. It's really not the easiest recipe to construct it, but that's the sound I hear: dominant of minor scale with some extra spice.
My favorite way to think of the altered scale: - Half Diminished Chord : go up a minor third and play that melodic minor scale (C halfdim -> Eb Melodic Minor) - Altered Chord: go up a half step and play that melodic minor scale (C Altered-> C# melodic minor) - Minor 6 Chord or Minor (Maj 7) Chord or Minor 6/9 Chord, or Minor Chord at end of 251: play that melodic minor scale
Still working through the fantastic tutorial on the diminished scale and couldn’t help myself and decided to have a quick look at the altered scale tutorial and ended up going through the whole thing. This stuff is amazing, Tony’s turned the lights on! Awesome teacher!
Dear Tony!!! Thank you so much for all your great, great videos! Really best opportunity for our persistent bavarian lock-downs to practice at last!!! And I really like your very open approach without any dogma!
Tony I'm glad I discovered your channel. Thanks so much for the free study/practice sheets. I am donating to your channel. I can't believe all the resources you give away with no catch. Thanks again.
Fantastic lesson! I love the way you teach. I also want to comment on the fantastic sound of your piano, a lot of acoustic piano's on youtube don't come close to that sound.
As a relatively advanced guitar player, I can understand everything you speak of, I also recognize the scales of course, but these pianistic ideas are amazing, especially the triad pairs 😀 Makes it so much clearer to see it on the piano!
TONY great lesson. A good way to learn this is ..say C Bb Ab Gb Fb Eb Db C or C Db Eb Fb Gb Ab Bb C. It was somethingnI.learned.by accident. I found going im whole steps.down from pinky (C) to thumb (E) in whole steps puts me on the Maj. 3rd (E) or Fb, .then finish with the first 3 notes.of the .C 1/2 Dim.scale. Scale.
Thank you so much for these lessons! Was working out some patterns on my own, but these are really great! another addition is using the "Coltrane pentatonic scale" of the relative melodic minor. so in C the notes are Db-Eb-E-Ab-Bb, or 1-2-b3-5-6 of the Db melodic minor! :) or thinking of it as "b2-b3-3-b6-b7" of C altered.
Tony..I am not a master all 12 of the alt scales..It is nice to see that the 1st Eb inversion over C ie. (G Bb Eb)/C base Is a C7 #9. I have always liked the sound of a #9 chord. Of course add a Db .. we have a C7 b9#9 for for free. I am not fluent in the use of the alt scale. I think I have been using it since I started piano in1970. Every time I hit a wrong note..still doing that today in Gb and B keys. The best Pianostyle100.
I was thinking that i discovered the way of thinking B scale except B . 🤣🤣 But in fact seeing a major scale is more easy to see melodic minor on keyboard to me. Especially while playing the altered scale tones randomly. Anyways great video again Tony. Learned too much from you, thanks.
Maybe not super intuitive but I always think about this scale as the first 4 notes of the diminished scale then whole tone scale. Excellent video! Thank you so much for this! :)
Hey Tony! Yiu mentioned someone thinking of C altered as B maj with a raised root. I always thought of it as C maj with everything else flat. 1, b2, b3, b4, b5, b6, b7. There's no end to the altered views of this thing!😊
Yeah I look at it as Gb lydian dominant. But I'm sure your aware of this or C super locrian I've heard it called or C dim whole tone. But Db Mel min and Gb lyd dom are my preference

This is great! youre a pretty great guitar teacher
I cannot play the guitar due to an injured left hand. I love the guitar and have a great appreciation for the instrument.
Excellent video!
beautiful.
This is so cool I cannot wait to use the ALTERED SCALE in depth!
Fantastic lesson! I love the way you teach.

Makes it so much clearer to see it on the piano!
Like 26:50 👍 👌
Also interesting that you always resolve your minor 2 5 1 to a minor 6 9 chord... The 6th seems to always work, much than how I thought it worked 😳
TONY great lesson. A good way to learn this is ..say C Bb Ab Gb Fb Eb Db C or C Db Eb Fb Gb Ab Bb C.
