Elysium15Tigress14 Your mind is like water my friend; when it gets agitated, it becomes difficult to see. But if you allow it to settle, the answer becomes clear. The tighter you grip the water in your palm it seamlessly alludes your control. A monk seeking guidance from Xuyun - a renowned Chinese Monk Master asked him if he would teach him the way to enlightenment. In response, Xuyun asks the Monk, "Have you eaten your meal?" The monk had eaten so Xuyun told him to go and wash his bowl. At that moment the monk was enlightened. You might think this anecdote abrupt and confusing. With further thought, you might try to figure out ~why~ - What the bowl and meal might represent and what the metaphorical lesson might be. After more thought, you might conclude that it all has no point. With this you would be correct; it doesn't. However, in this discovery you would have realized the point. The point being not to have one, so I guess technically you would have also been wrong. You might find this completely contradictory and foolish, again you'd be correct. This is also the point. With only a little dissection, this seemingly simple and pointless riddle reveals to be a whirlwind of progressive contradictions and confusions when put through the analytical mind. How can it have a point by not having one? How can it mean anything by not meaning anything? How can one argue for it and against it at the same time? This paradoxical and brain breaking riddle is known as a kōan (pronounced Co-anne). A kōan is a riddle or dialectic meditational device used in zen by Buddhist practises that is intentionally designed to, at least on the surface to be unclear and obscure. It's point is not to provide a conclusion or answer to the question presented, but rather to disregard the relevance of the answer. To detach itself from the functions of conclusion and singular resolution. There are over a thousand known kōans that follow this format used to test and challenge zen and reveal the obscurity of the mind. In general, life is confusing, uncertain, and paradoxical. As much as we work against this, it mostly remains so. No matter our efforts, every time we think we have some understanding or control over life the tighter we squeeze, the further it alludes our grip. Sciences, religions, and philosophies make sense of the world through various methods - some more successful than others, but nonetheless all face the inevitable limits of themselves, the human mind, and the time they are erected by sheer lack of alternatives we understand the world with thoughts and words. Through which we can create systems of order and understanding like logic, story, social structures, and so on. This can greatly assist our ability to survive, co-exist, deal with physical barriers, and communication. However, thoughts and words reveal of course that we can only describe the world with thoughts and words, which in result the economic sense of what exits beyond thoughts and words measures life arguably like any other tool. Thinking and language are limited to the confines of their abilities; like a hammer cannot screw in a screw and a nail cannot cut a board of wood. The human mind cannot make sense of the mindless and a hammer perhaps smash a screw in, and a nail can perhaps split a board of wood like the mind can perhaps consider life, but none of these items or tools fully suit the jobs they are carrying out, and thus will fall short in their abilities to properly complete them. A kōan embodies this notion - opposed to most stories and ideas that attempt to fight against obscurity and absurdity by using defined structure, logic, and resolutions, the kōan harmonizes with the absurdity of life and disregards the need for conclusive answers. In rough terms, zen is founded on this synchronization with the obscure and abstract. To give context, zen is a subset of Buddhism which was founded and initially practiced somewhere around the 6th century BCE in China and then was further popularized in Japan soon thereafter. Buddhism is considered by many a religious practice, but unlike many others and philosophical views, Zen Buddhism is not concerned with concrete ideas and concepts. Thus, is not really much a belief system at all, but rather is considered more of a state of being. In other terms it is a way of living in an accordance with one's limitations and to articulate and understand things in any absolute sense and living more off of intuition and spontaneity, which even misses the mark by trying to describe itself. Paradoxically in an attempt to define zen, you've already incorrectly defined it. Alan Watts, a famous popularizer and philosopher explained that zen is "trying to point at the physical universe so that you can look at it without forming any ideas about it." Without saying life is this, or that zen says life is, and what is unclear at least in words and ideas. Which, is to say that the universe is not to be structured or boxed in some human or rational way. Even if it could be, but rather it could be experienced from the perspective that we are all floating or swimming down a river in which there are rocks that extrude out of the surface and represent various things and ideas that might seem appealing to grab ahold of and stop ourselves from going further down the river. However, if we stop to hold onto a rock, we stop moving. Yet, the water continues to flow beneath us, but we remain stuck and rigid. Zen suggests that in this we begin to experience an increased pain and suffering that arises from being attached to something and disconnected from the fluid of activity happening around us - where and how we are suppose to flow. In Zen, this movement is referred to as "the Dao" or 'the way'. At risk at adding further confusion and paradox to an confusing and paradoxical thought experiment, a kōan does not appear to that we should cease asking questions, or seeking answers to questions, or anything of that sort. Kōans do not spring up out of lack of thought or contemplation but out of a specific sort of contemplation; a self-refreshing referential thinking that denied its ability to be a single, concrete, and universal idea that answers or understands what might exist beyond itself. Zen and the lesson of the kōans suggest that we should flow with life, ask questions, and contemplate them but not become tricked by any singular idea or answer that might tempt us into a final answer or resolution for life as it is likely nothing more than a mirage of the mind. This is of course, extremely difficult, especially since we tend to extract our identities out of our ideas and beliefs from others and events that partly shape our world lenses, and thus our mind works very hard to hold onto them. Arguably it is never fully possible to avoid being deceived by this notion and the function of the mind's ego. Even holding on to the idea of not holding on to the idea of any ideas, is in fact holding onto an idea. However, perhaps after considering the lesson of the kōans, the more practical point is to remember the playfulness of most things - to see through the contrived and to take ourselves a little less seriously, and to open up to new ideas, experiences, and people that we might otherwise feel disconnected from or in conflict with. Just as the center of a hurricane os calm with little-to-no motion despite being surrounded by a violent and rapid coil of winds. We can live in the center of a hurricane of knowing and unknowing, and still remain calm and at ease despite the surrounding storm of contradictions and paradoxes. Regardless of spiritual, philosophical, or religious beliefs, perhaps the lesson of the kōans applies to all. Everyday questions that inevitably reach the limits of themselves, a kōan and zen in general let us know this is ok and points us to the bigger picture of where all stories and riddles emerge; they must remain unclear, obscure, funny, and open to interpretation to be it at all. Life is just one big kōan, this understanding has helped me greatly with the uncertainty of today and tomorrow so hopefully you can also find some comfort in it too.
And maybe makes Satan a tad bit more intimidating than a 300 Ib suburban house wife. Seriously, this show nerfed an archangel so much that a extremely out of shape, ordinary human could choke him out with a poker.
