I grew up in Milwaukee and always read about this track in racing papers and thought of it as one of the nation's top tracks. Heartbreaking to see how we've lost all this😔🏁
When I was in the army I would pass by this track on my way home or back to Ft. Riley and always thought this was such a beautiful track and said I wanted to attend a race there but never had the opportunity. So sad to see it closed. I didn't know it was closed 'til just now. Just so sad to see a track with so much going for it and to see it like this. It breaks my heart to see any track close but this one had such a place in my heart not to have ever attended a race there. This is just plain wrong.
When I was a kid we came out there from ohio for a big late model race!, several nascar drivers showed up along with the great Marty Robbins racing his red nova. It was so cold we took the fan off for qualifying! We finished in the top ten that year!. If I remember it wasn't far from Odessa!. Everyone talked about how nice the track was!. The good old days!.

Thanks for posting!!! I grew up in Odessa and went to the racetrack as a kid. I remember going one year for the 4th of July when Sonny James and Connie Smith played....pretty cool !!
How sad to see! I went to many many races that I-70 Speedway never missed a World Cup 400 watching Larry Phillips race the high banks of I 70 was magic!! Now both I 70 and Larry are gone,Thanks for the memories. Rest in peace
I-70 Speedway closed at the end of racing season in the fall of 2008. I went to one of their last events which is the reason why I can remember the date.
Track has been sold to multiple partners. Due to open in 2019. Overseeing the work is a business man by the name of Chris Payne. He ownes other Race Tracks.
What a tragic shame. I'm not surprised given how NASCAR and big corporate has just about single handedly ruined racing (IMHO). I was there during it's opening year through '72, at which time I entered the Air Force. Got to see all the Midwest great drivers like Ramo Stot, Ernie Derr, Fred Whistler, Dave Wall, Terry Bevins, Dick Trickle and so many more. Even if re-opens as dirt, it will never see days like the early 70's when cars were lined up on I-70 for miles at the Odessa exit waiting to enter.
I am pretty sure Brad McDonald owns the I-70 Speedway currently. The likely hood of it ever opening again is probably slim. When I was in there walking around the buildings were in poor condition and the pavement on the speedway is crack with some trees growing in it. It would be interesting to see what it would look like if someone had a good mower and a lot of round up but doubtful anyone will ever run on I-70 again. Thanks for watching the video
Was going through vids and watched BackyardExploration's video on this place. What's really bad is that so much was just abandoned in place. Lots of stuff that could have been auctioned off or put in a liquidation sale when the track closed is instead rotting or weathering away as it's no longer cared for. Some of it isn't pretty now, but by the condition you could tell it must have been near-new right when it was left. Things like all the stuff for concessions: kitchen stuff, reefers, vending machines, registers, and not only that but what looks like tool sets, pit equipment, and various vehicles including some race cars. So regardless of whatever reason it shut down, whoever owns it now let it all go to waste.
That was a sad sight to see...... R.I.P I-70 speedway. 10 of the best years of my life were spend on that track. No other track like it, To bad it wasn't managed better.................................. The dip in turn 1 will be missed always. \m/Junk to the front.................Keith (Frosty) Buntemeyer 92/76
Would love to see NASCAR Trucks back at I-70, but with Gateway, Kansas, Indianapolis, Road America, MidOhio and Knoxville (not all of these host Truck races), I do not see NASCAR returning to I-70
makes me sad.. seen the pics before, but to have it with music makes it worse. spent tons of time at that place in the 90s.. memories live on I-70 Speedway!!
We lost I 70 speedway and KCIR drag strip, it's surely been some Sad Times here. At least the I70 speedway is somewhat recognized. They bulldozed the Drag strip down and turned into a park.
Hello. This is an amazing video, thank you so much for posting this. I have several family members that went to this exact track. Every time we drive past the huge sign, story's spread through the car. I am very interested in checking this place out including the fact I photograph and film abandoned places. Could you send me a Private Message on how you got in, or who owns the property so I can ask for permission? Thank you so much and God bless.
No one will forget that i remember the time my family was doing dwarf and mod lites on one side and i heard a BOOM and dr danger lit him self on fire in the car man I-70 was the sh*t back in the day to bad its gone now

I got to see Don Gartlits set a National record there in the early 70's.
If anyone knows when it closed will you let me know? I would just like to know.
