- Just a quick look at Verlinden Productions, an accessory and occasionally specialty kit make which closed its doors in 2015. They helped pioneer the use of resin, photo-etched brass and other diorama making accessories.

I frequently visited his small shop in the Belgian town of Lier. He always sat in the back modeling while his wife served the customers. This was end of the 70's, beginning 80's. François was a pioneer!
Was cleaning up some stuff in my basement and found a couple of there Vietnam bunkers I never built maybe it's time to do so. They where a leader in their field Thanks again Max another Great video

I’ve found again my Verlinden 1/35 figures after 30 years in the attic..Fantastic products..Also I found conversions for M-113’s and a resin conversion for a Sherman firefly,incredible and now I’m back in the hobby I plan using it all..Shame he never sold the molds,,but you never know…Great video thank you🇬🇧🇺🇸👍

Verlinden was way ahead of his time. It was not only his products, his typical way of painting models was also something special. His built and painted models and dioramas in the centre section of Tamiya's catalogues of the late seventies and early eighties inspired me a lot. A great guy and a great company lost to the modeling world.
That dumpster photo was telling. Almost representative of the whole hobby.. We must keep this going!

I had that Verlinden 1/72 scale aircraft carrier launch platform diorama which I used with a Hasegawa 1/72 F-14A Tomcat with ground crew and vehicles. It built up beautifully and it was probably one of the kits I was most proud of building. I had purchased it from an actual Squadron model shop in Silver Spring, Maryland back in the early 90s.
My brother any I got some of these great 120mm figures as kids like a B-17 crew member, SAS soldier with MP5 (we often got them as birthday presents f. e.) and my dad still has a native American with a cap and ball rifle made by Verlinden in his book shelf.
This stuff was pretty expensive in those days, but VP made very crisp and highly detailed stuff that a serious modeller couldn`t ignore.

I discovered Verlinden through his beautiful dioramas in the Tamiya catalogues. His dioramas always had copious amounts of weapons or supplies strewn about. His books are in my library, right next to Shep Paine's.
I still have some Verlinden 1/35 diorama accessories. Remember seeing those photos a few years ago. Just smashed molds and what even looked like a diorama or two tossed in those industrial sized dumpsters. Years of history just trashed.

I've been working on a Mig-29 from 30 years ago with the Verlinden upgrade kit. So awesome!
Verlinden was an excellent model maker. His large factory dioramas were inspirational. My first two armour dioramas used his plaster castings of bombed out German structures. Too bad I loaned them to a hobby shop for display and never got them back when they closed.
Thank you for doing all these histories. I have a lot of fond memories of building kits from quite a few of them. Very well done Sir.
Very sad to here what has happened to a lot of these companies over the years. Sure sucks to here most went under and the few that are left are part of huge corporations that only care about the bottom line. Sad times but I guess that’s the way most things are now.
Never was into dioramas but did like Verlindens aircraft detail sets. Especially the 1/72 ones they did for the P-47, P-40, and P-39. They were awesome and the detail for such a small scale was amazing.
I fondly remember discovering Verlinden Products in my youth. My modeling definitely improved with their use. Sad that they are gone. Now we need a video on Squadron!

It became a ritual, get a Tamiya kit and then go look through the Verlinden boxes to find the perfect addition.
The first aftermarket multimedia anything was a Verlinden 1/48 F-16 cockpit set. After that, I drank it all in. Every aircraft set I could find and afford, I would get and build. I won my first junior category with an F4U-4 update set. Memories....thanks Max! I still have an F-16 cockpit set in my stash for posterity. We really loved through a golden age.
Verlinden was the kick-off for aftermarket global offer... at least for me, was the first time I heard of resin suff... their aircraft carrier support vehicles were fantastic... now replaced by the Skunkmodels workshop injection kits of such matter. Another great video! Thanks
Thanks for this one. FP was a pioneer indeed, but I think his modeling "style" probably had more influence on the hobby than his products did.

Thanks again for an informative and entertaining history. I had almost forgotten about Verlinden Products, and it is quite depressing to see how the Verlinden story ended ignonimously. I was first introduced to Verlinden ( as most were) through Tamiya catalogues and I remember studying those images for hours, marveling at the meticulous attention to detail. Those images had a huge influence on my modelling sensibilities and tastes. I never acquired many Verlinden products as they were frankly beyond my means! I still have a 1/35th hydrocal plaster ruin kit ( detailed only one side!...sigh) some dry transfers for U.S. Vietnam War AFVs and at least 2 books . I'll have to dig em out for nostalgia's sake! Thanks a ton !
I was never had the skill to use their stuff, but I was fascinated and impressed by what others did with it.

Being from St. Louis, I followed VLS around as they changed locations every few years. I remember asking permission to come into their North St. Louis location to gawk at the dioramas on display. A few years later they opened a museum in which to display them. Truly some awe inspiring work.
Verlinden had some of the best quality aftermarket resin detail sets available back in the day.
I remember buying several Verlinden publications, with incredibly beautiful dioramas.
Also purchased some USAAF, bomber maintenance crew.

The accessories for Tamiya Armour were superb. I used
to paint with acrylics and dry
brush with pastel dust then
use a matt lacquer.
The figures were a little bit too
tall at times. I collected all the
resin ejector seats..! 😄
Ah yes, in the industry they were known as Verlinden, Letterman, and Out of stock. The worst fill rate in the Industry. That is what fueled other companies to create competing lines. The demand was there, they just couldn't fill it. When I lived in Europe, I noticed the lack of contests, just club displays. When I asked around I got the same answer: Verlinden. He was a dominating force that drove away those who wanted to compete.
Many of the larger cast items, like the Carrier deck, were actually cast in plaster, not resin. So very hard to find one that wasn't damaged.
I used their 1/35th scale decals for ww2 figures, it took a lot of decal solution to get them to lay flat but it was worth it.
Terrific Video - I think the reason that Verlinden threw away a lot of the Resin Master Moulds was due to the shorter production life span - sadly Resin Moulds don't last as long as the Metal Injection Plastic Moulds that can last decades of use ( for example like the 1960's Aifix HMS Hood 1/600 Scale Ship Moulds that are still being produced and made to this date ) .
I had their Verlinden aftermarket item for my King Tiger Diorama - for the 1/45 German Army Divisional Road Sign - I also used their ' Luftwaffe Plank Hardstand ' for my Eduard Focke-Wulf 190 1/48 Model - along with the Resin Oil Drums - and the wonderful Luftwaffe Oil Cart - that was simply wonderful to build and is still on display .
The reason Verlinden lasted so long was due to the fact no-one else was making the aftermarket diorama items until recently
they might have had their problems but they were genuine leaders in this new product line .

Verlinden's ceramic buildings were interesting and useful for dioramas.

Some very nice items Verlinden had. I loved their reference books. The first time I used they're products, was one of their Sherman turrets. I couldn't believe the mold quality, cast texture and foundry marks, Wow!. Absolutely fantastic. It was paired with M&P models aftermarket hull. (Thats another company you could do a bio on if you can find any info). Nowadays you have companies like Asuka (formerly Tasca) who make outstanding Sherman kits out of the box with very little aftermarket needed. Anyway, I'm rambling. Nice video!👍👍👍
I loved Verlinden products and it was a sad time. I wish I had purchased many more of their kits.

In the early '90s, the only thing I managed to buy from Verlinden was a catalog ... I spent years seeing it every day, dreaming of buying its products, unfortunately that remained in my dreams and nothing else. The prices were very expensive and the possibility of paying and not receiving them here in Brazil was very great.
Here in Mexico a friend of mine made his living by making copies of the Verlinden products. Here the scale model community is not big so mostly we know each other. And everyone knows MCV.

Hi Max ! The music for this video was in one of the early versions of “turn to stone” from like the first album ! I have an ELO “collection of greatest hit” from the
Electric Light Orchestra and it sounds nothing like this ! I’m glad you got me how to pronounce the words correctly Verlinden ? Anyway I’m glad you brought up this particular (“subject”), because, of the fact that these models made of resin and metal are in fact the very Best accessories and models I’ve ever worked on ! Specially for the wounded and extra parts for all vehicles ! And let’s not even get started on (“Squadron”) because, the first squadron model I had came with just about every little detail that went on it, although mostly plastic, it did come with photo edge parts and a metal chain ! Far as I’m concerned these companies are some of the best that you’ve been able to do your reports on !!! And by the way I particularly appreciate every little thing that you do and every little detail and every little piece of research that you do ! Sir, I thank you ! 🌊🐺

In the beginng years before its was named Verlinden Productions it had the name DCS. I liked very much his plaster diorama ruin's.

hi maxmodels, your comments about verlinden using other peoples model parts is true, there is distinct ejection marks on at least 1 of this 1/35th m113 hatches, obviously a tamiya part., i met him once at a local model show/weekend in the mid 70's, in the uk, not long after he started, he had quite a selection of parts ect. i find your mini histories very interesting as i remember when i first got some of my models as it covers the same era. i too am a profesional modeler and make similar conversion parts ect for gamers & modelers so maybe you can cover me one day when i retire! well done.
I met Verlinden on occasion and sometimes he would be incredibly helpful, fascinating and engaging and at other times he was not a nice person to be around. Far from me to claim he was a bad person, but I think he made that critical mistake in making a job out of his hobby and suffered the consequences and it probably weighed down on him.
I did not want to say anything but I sort of got that feeling. Creative people can be that way. Trust me, I have worked with enough artists.
Usually talented people are that way. Part of their curse.

Credit where it's due: he was a pioneer in the diorama field. I have a smattering of shells, maps and other add-ons for armor kits still in the stash. I never cared for their large scale figures; the proportions always looked a bit off and the poses struck me as dressed mannequins rather than living persons. Their smaller scale offerings were hit or miss, with the ACW coastal artillery and gun crews the best of the lot IMO. Never tried any of the aircraft detailing sets.
Max: The out take was great. Very funny! I have given thought to building a Vicksburg mortar emplacement diagrams. Or having a cannon, with cason, and limber. Actually just want a scale model cannon that can be fired. Plays to my model building and pyrotechnic desires.

Was watching your (4/25/2020) esp. You showed a pic of two Rat Patrol jeeps. I think that a playset by Marx (Louis Marx and Company). They made Playsets for TV shows in the 50's and 60's. On the wakipedia(I always call it that) page Rat Patrol not listed.
It is sad when that happens. During the 1980’s there was a downturn in the economy and major Engineering companies had massive layoffs and office closings. Technical manuals were thrown in the trash. Smart people went dumpster diving. Damn the Harvard school of business. (I think you understand what I mean). It has been far to long between your postings. Hope to see a new video soon.

Verlindens masters are now owned by a 3 party partnership in the US. Of the 3 the only one I will mention is Lots of Models where you can buy lots of Verlinden stuff both new and old. Products are back in production or will be. This info has been out for quite a while.

Oh. I remember visiting a miniature military museum with a load of Verlinden dioramas. It was in St. Charles, MO and was phenomenal.

They made my 1/35 field guns complete with their gun crews as most kits do not come with the gun crews.
I have some of their products. The FW190 set of weapons. Some of the resin is warped beyond repair. But there is a treasure that will be used. I find for my purpose , I stopped buying this kind of product and build out of box.

I do not know. Let me see. My feed shows my oldest video with my jeep is 13 years old but I know it has been longer.
Max for a good doc on Verlinden, you should reach out to jeff at squadron.com. he is their chief modeller and does videos for the company. He was a designer and modeller at verlinden for many many years. The stories he would share while at eaglequest were fascinating.

What is the best glue for attaching Resin to PS?
I use super glue
I have only built one resin model, the USS Knox (I did a few build videos). I don't even recall what O used but I know most of the paint came off with the tape. I think it was CA but it has more trouble since it cannot 'weld' resin.

I read somewhere he could'nt get the asking price for the molds so he threw a tantrum and binned the lot!. Some people think plastic modellers are strange. Are you deliberatly trying to sound like Joe Swanson from Family Guy?.

Some items were made out of plaster and furniture foam before resin . Many of the plaster parts broke during shipment. No look at Kurton products.
