Yeah, but "talking with someone" in the US also means you are doing more than just talking. It means like, flirting, hanging out, maybe hooking up a little, but you haven't made it official yet -- no "feste Beziehung" yet.
yeah but EU borders are a bit different than US borders and Montana lives like maybe 800 km from the closest border in USA, so this concept can be more foreign to her
Yes, German boys don't take a hint. Actually, after my first date with my girlfriend I did not even know that we had just had one. I drove her home. At her parents house I stopped. I Looked at her, she looked at me.....and then I asked her why she did not step out of my car. Then she went. But I must have done something right. She is my wife now...since 14 Years. ;-)
"The teenagers in german clubs are really nice and open". This statement probably corresponds to the fact that a 14 year old german/austrian kid would probably outdrink the average 20 year old US-american young adult. 😂😂
As a german boy I don’t want to annoy girls, I would only ask for her snapchat if I was sure that she’s cool with me and wouldn’t say no because I don’t want to get her into a weird situation with this fake friendliness bullshit and her giving me her name and not snapping with me at all because she never intended to do so in the first place.
The formula for the "biggest age gap a couple can have without being wierd in germany" is: (Age of the Male):2+7. For example: The Girlfriend/Wife of a 40 Year old man has to be at least 27.
I think "dating" is understood different in the US. There isn't this culture where you say "ok after the second date we have to do this" and after the thirth we're in a relationship. It's more like you know someone for a while and you come together after a while. When you are together you are together. I get the feeling that americans put dating and being in a relationship (Beziehung) on the same level. But maybe that's how I see it. By the way "Ich bin vergeben" is a way to tell someone you're in a relationship.
I rather thought that it's the other way round. In Germany, you tend to be exclusive earlier and "wir sind zusammen" means you have a real relationship with everything that belongs to it whereas "dating" is often not really a relationship, just going out together and texting a lot.
@C J I wish people would stop telling others to stop overthinking something. If you want to be superficial, go for it. But please let others use their brains. Thinking deep is not a flaw, but an asset.
@C J Well, you prove that you can lash out, congratulations. But your reasoning lacks any substance. No one having a bit of life experience and insight into psychology and sociology would deny that exposure to media does change concepts and values. You yourself are proving my point by being a bully, which is largely the consequence of the American winner and loser mentality being portrayed as positive in the media. But as you seem to be more interested in putting others down than discussing something in a respectful and constructive way, I'll get off the train here and don't waste my time any longer with someone who must be very miserable in order to bully random people on the internet.
@C J Insulting somebody over the internet doesn't make you cool. Also, he is completely right, watching american movies, being exposed to american news etc does change the behaviour of people a bit, denying that would be foolish.
This whole - not saying "I love you" until months into a relationship - thing in the US is the weirdest thing to me. It's a complete throwoff whenever it comes up in a show I watch, because that's US exclusive and anywhere else people think it's crazy to make a huge deal out of that.
I'm German and for me, that's completely normal. Some couples say that earlier and others later. I think it's weirder and more negative when you say that after you know each other only for a month or so, because you can't really LOVE a person after such a short time. What I experienced is that you often say "Ich hab dich lieb" at first, that's the softer version of "ich liebe dich" 😄
However I feel like that’s also a thing I noticed in Asia. Like in Cantonese I wouldn’t say “I love you” a lot even in a relationship I would actually rather say “I like you” because it’s just a cultural thing. However if I do tell someone that I like them it does mean more than if I would do it in German.

I benefited the most from our age gap, cause he knew exactly what to do and we rarely got into childish fights.

"Ich habe etwas mit..." means definitely more than just talking. You're already dating, maybe more... Cinema: You're right about popcorn. You have to ask for salty popcorn. I usually take a mix of sweet and salty, but I also love nachos with cheese and salsa at the movies. You should give it a try when you're back in Germany. 😊
I guess German taste buds are used to sweet popcorn, U.S. taste buds are used to salted popcorn. Neither way of making popcorn is really GROSS. I like salted popcorn, because I grew up with it. I don't care much for sweet popcorn. But I would not say it is GROSS. But, if that description is used, it is vaild, too. However, I have run into some Germans that liked salted popcorn as well when they tried it. Americans are used to salted butter, Germans aren't. Many Germans are used to carbonated water (Wasser mit Kohlensäure), Americans aren't. It is simply a preference. Sort of like having grown up with dubbed movies (although it is not quite the same thing). I have heard Germans say things like, "I like the German "voice" better than the American voice", of a respective actor/actress . Surely that does not apply to all Germans, but I have heard them say that very often. Since Montana was talking about going to the movies. Fun fact: Back in the 80's, you were even allowed to smoke. You could push a button, and i.e. someone would even bring you a beer. Needless to say, the smoking in theaters did not last long. Nor did the service.
Well I think that "dating someone" in the US is the same as "being in a relationship" in Germany, the word "dating" is used differently. So I would imagine that "talking" is also not just meant to be talking to someone, but to hang out with someone without being official.
First of all the cinema is something strange for both sides. I was a year in the us as an au pair and ended up never buying any popcorn because salty popcorn was so yucky to me. Yet the chairs and stuff are way more comfortable. As a german i would say a teen club is the right spot to get a easy one night stand. I wouldn’t look there for something serious. Of course it can work out, yet seems less likely.
I feel like sleeping over in the US is also a bigger deal, since there are more people that are very religious and therefor the ”no sex before marriage thing” is more common. I did a high school year in the US and I know that this was the reason for my host parents at least. But for me it felt like they were more concerned about it happening at their house under their ”supervision“. Here in Germany most people live their faith a bit different, if they are even religious at all and sex in general is not that big of a taboo. I guess here it‘s more about giving teenagers a safe space and talking more openly about it while in the US parents try to protect their teenager kids by making it harder for them to get the chance to do it, by not letting them have sleep overs.
It's worse than that. A lot of the American attitudes about sex certainly come from religion, but religion has such a central role in society that this also influences non-religious or less religious people. You can't really get away from it. If people don't argue with directly religious arguments they will just come up with seemingly scientific reasons to come to the same conclusion. Or just vague and very common attitudes like thinking that boys only want sex while girls only want emotional connections. That whole "not under my roof" thing is just completely bizarre. And doesn't actually help with making children more independent.
S Black The people I talked to, mostly came from a pretty religious background and I didn’t really see it working as well. It was certainly the other way around and I felt that many of them weren‘t as educated about using protection etc. while (obviously) still doing it. I find it very problematic when religion and politics kind of blend in and while Germany is definetly not free of that (our ruling party is the Christian Democratic Union) , it seems to be a way bigger problem in the US especially in the republican party.
I mean I (22f) live in Germany and I have a girlfriend (20) who is not allowed to stay over at a friends house for the night if this friend is not in their church... it really sucks because we are both adults but bc my girlfriend lives with their parents we can't do a sleepover...
In the US you as s parent could be charged for contributing to the delinquency of a minor if you allowed underage minors (less than 18) to sleep in same room (especially if you knew they were having sex). I'm not an attorney but I could imagine you could be charged with aiding statutory rape if one of the parties was over the age of 18.
I also did an exchange year and I had the chillest parents ever. I could bring anybody home and everybody was allowed to stay over. I just had to write a quick texts to let my host mum know
My cousin in America said that when she was in Germany and was allowed to drink and was under 18, it was boring for her, because it was not illegal to do it. She did not get a "buzz" out of it, I guess. She was used to not being allowed to do it in America. On the other hand, I was not allowed inside a club in America, because I had no ID on me - I had left my U.S. passport at home, because no one ever asked me for ID in Germany when I went out. I was 24 at the time. This was in 1983. And it was even OK to drink beer at 16 in Germany.
A good education about sex in the US is almost not existing, the most common lesson is, they teach you abstinence. What is far away from the reality and not helpful. Maybe German boys or girls are a little bit more shy at the beginning, but it changed really fast when they know each other for quite a while. And a lot of talk at the beginning doesn't mean that there is more happening until at the end. Talking without saying something.
I never dated anyone here and I live in Germany. So this video was actually useful for me too! 🤣 Oh, and I love your wall decoration, Montana! But would you hang fanart there? 😄 I’m working on a drawing! 😆
German here: My parents actually gave me a queensize bed for my 18th birthday, so my boyfriend could comfortably stay over :D I feel like dating has more official rules in the US, like what stage of relationship you are supposed to be in after which date. As a teenager I didn't go on any dates. I fell in love with a guy in my class. We saw each other in class every day, we took the train home together, we started texting and hanging out at his or my place. There never was an official date at a movie theater or restaurant, it just developed gradually, like a friendship but better ^^
I was told that in the US people can date serval people at the same time, while in Germany it is more exclusive. Once you are dating you do NOT date anybody else. What is your opinion to that, please?
@@strandkorbst9643 I guess not dating but seeing more than one person. I read and heard about it that in the US people are often unclear about the status of their relationship because they don't put a label on it. I guess that is what the original comment refers to.
Im an American whos lived in Germany for 2 years and have dated both German and American girls. My experience has been that after one date German girls just expect that your exclusive and would be upset if you were talking to other girls. On the other hand an American girl would most likely not be upset until you had verbally established that your exclusive
Haha love it how shocked you are about this different country thing. Passau is at the border to Austria and they also speak the same language. Actually Bavaria (the part of Germany Passau is in) has more in common with Austria than with the rest of Germany.
In germany we say „ich habe etwas mit...“ when we got near to a relationship with a person or when we have sex with someone for a while. 😂😂 If we don‘t want to tell someone that we got almost a relationship ship or feelings for someone we VERY OFTEN SAY „wir schreiben nur miteinander“ 😂😂😂 which means „we only text each other“ 🤣😂
I think that there is a big cultural difference. In the US there is this "date concept" like you ask somebody if they want to go on a date with you and they say yes and then both parties kinda know that they "are on a date". Even if you didn't litteraly ask the person "out on a date" but rather said something like "Wanna see that movie ?" or "I was wandering if you'd like to grab coffe" You could then, later on - at least technically - ask the other person: "Just to be clear - is this a date?" and the other person could say: "of course" or "er no" (typically followed by awkward silence) But whatever follows - everybody in the US has bought into that concept that "a date" is a more or less "official thing" you do in order to find out if you like somebody. Like at first you date, then you call it a relationship and then you get married and live happily ever after untill you get divorced. Many people even count dates and say things like: "On our third date, he was so sweet. He brought me flowers etc." In Germany there is no such thing. At least not for most people. The normal concept here is that if you like somebody and they like you back, you hang out together do stuff together untill - at some point - you kiss, have sex and gradually start behaving more and more like as if you were in a relationship until you are in a relationship. Since American pop culture is a thing here in Germany and French pop culture had been a thing before American pop culture became a thing, people know that there are "dates" and "rendezvous" and even things like "blind dates" and "speed dating" are popular with some people. But for the average German, labeling the steps during the process of falling in and out of love with somebody is not as big a thing as it is in the US.
My experience: The agegap thing: true! The sleepover thing: true! The popcorn thing: sweet popcorn is so good! The shy thing: yup. It‘s not expected for them to make the first move The snapchat thing: it‘s the same here with some people, but most ppl don‘t use it for dating The school thing: true. It‘s also way more awkward when u break up so... The club thing: true.
Yeah, long distance relationships are a bigger thing over here, definitely. Not too common, because it really is a major inconvenience, but it is a thing and anyone who has experienced it knows it can work if you're the right type of person for it.
I was born in the U S . I'm German and Cherokee. I've always felt that if 2 people are serious about each other they should be able to have the comfort and safety of a house and a bed! The back seat of a car is no I place for someone you can claim to truly love!
@@2-_-V-_-.2 What shouldn't be normalised? The saying? You can´t really normalise a saying because it is just that. It has been around for so long and it is usually said when two people with a significant age gap date. Like someone who 30 dating someone who is 40. And i highly doubt a pedophile would use this saying as an excuse because he wants to date a 10 year old. "Well Officer you know how they say: Age is just a number?" Nobody would say it in that context. So i really don´t know what you are getting at? Should we now start prohibiting words from being said?
Oh my, I've been watching some of your videos for a while already and just found out you stayed in Passau🤣 I could've walked into without noticing hahaha😊
As a German guy I would also confirm that most guys are shy and don't really get hints, although I'd only really say that for younger guys. It does get a lot better the older you get, speaking from my personal experience.
I feel like german teens are more independent at a younger age so a 3 or even 4 year age gap in a relationship is normal since both parts behave and think equally
In Austria we also have salty popcorn like in the US. I was shocked when I found out a couple of years ago that in German cinemas it's common to eat sweet popcorn. 😂🍿
I think it depends on where you are living. I know people who like salty popcorn and think that there is nothing wrong about it and then there are people who do not even know that salty popcorn exists.
There was a 4 year age gap between my friend and her boyfriend! Me, who just yesterday heard 7th graders talk about their 23 year old boyfriends: Yeah no 4 years are alright
"Your bf lives in another country?!" O_O Passau is literally located on the border to Austria xD You take two steps too far to the east and are practically there.
A gernan friend of mine named Schowalter went to the U.S. to live there for a few years. So there is both. Schowalter from Gernany going to the U.S. and Schowalter from Virginia going to Germany.
Girls usually start puberty earlier than boys and mature faster. So to have a boy with a similar level of maturity, he needs to be a few years older than the girl. Example: One of my aunts was an assistant teacher at a German high school (in Berlin). She told me that of they had a class party, they would usually invite the boys of the next year up and the girls of the class one year below. This way the girls had the older boys they could relate to, and the boys had the younger girls to have company with. Also the normal age difference is about four years. E.g. my parents met when my mother was 16 and in final year of Realschuile and my father a university student, four years older. My father, a student of geology, was doing an internship with a mine in the mining town my mother grew up in and had rented a room with the family of my mother's best friend. Of course, this was in the early 1960s, and the relationship was for several years quite innocent. When I was in high school, back in the 1980s, the same thing happened: Most of my female classmates had boyfriends, who were a few years older than themselves.
I love nachos with cheese sauce and sweet caramelized popcorn 😍 . If we want to eat salty stuff we eating potato chips like funny-frisch chipsfrisch "ungarisch" seasoning, they're very popular.
There is not always a strict difference between the friends of both partners. Take me for example: My wife is the ex-girlfriend of my best friends brother. My best friend is the ex-husband of my ex-girlfriend. And we all are still friends and always have been.
Ich kann dir in jeden Punkt zustimmen! Außer das “ich hab was mit jemanden” mehr als reden bedeutet 😂 Aber man trotzdem nicht in einer festen Beziehung ist.
Germany is about the same as here in The Netherlands. My first girlfriend lives in Belgium and I differ 15 years with my girlfriend, so I guess I fit your story ;)
I really would say that German boys can't take a hint😅 (and neither can girls), we have more of a culture that sees men and women as true equals (more does not mean a lot), so the responsibility lies on both parties, which can be a nightmare 😂. And asking someone out can be a big thing and my personal fear was often to make someone feel uncomfortable around me, if it turns out they are not interested. My first girlfriend asked me out and even as a teen my manliness was not attacked.

About the club topic: Normally in german clubs the people who are starting to talk to you don't really want to date you. They just want to have an one night stand. Moreover: girls watch yourself and other girls in german clubs!! That is the rule number one! There are happing bad things with drunk girls pretty often and many nice guys turn out to be pretty bad. Of course not everyone .... but please be careful!
Ofc theres cases in which young girls get with older guys, just like you mentioned, but it's definitely not too common. Aaaand btw. the first time I ever eat sweet popcorn in my life was 20 years ago in Buffalo USA at the movie! 🍿 Nachos and candy it‘s just an addition to the variation they offer at the movies and I think it goes perfect 👌🏼😌
This video is so accurate🙈 but actually, having the same friend group in a relationship was pretty common for me too😅 so that most defenitely does not happen to americans only
In Scandinavia girls dont tend to find guys around their own age that interesting. So they date older guys. And here Its more like if she 13-14 the guy will be at least 16-17. In my class all the girls at 14 dated guys over 18. And all army guys too. So the girls would stand outside at 3 in the afternoon and then be picked up by guys on motorbikes and in cars. No girl i knew wanted someone still in school. But i know a ton of girls who dated guys in their 30's too. I used to find it weird until it happend to me. And i was in my mid 40's at the time. Never met a parent that had a problem with that. As long as you treat them right they don't mind i find.
I totally agree with sweet popcorn being gross, but you can get that in the US as well. I was in a state park in California and was happy to see popcorn. You can imagine how disappointed I was when I tasted it and it turned out to be sweet :(
The sleepover this is definitely true, it is not uncommon that after a party, a friend (sometimes of the opposite sex) comes over with you because they live in the next village and the busses don’t drive anymore, not to speak of actual couples
Montana, I know Vienna is in Austria and not close to the border, but the train takes 2,5 hours so for a long distance relationship it's not that bad and could be way worse. Great video btw and greetings from Vienna
Haha about the movie theather: i had this culture shock reverse. I was in new york with my dad and on a rainy day we went to a movie theather and i ordered popcorn without thinking about it. And then i was shocked to get salty popcorn haha
First of all let me just compliment you on your content, I stumbled upon your videos a while ago and even though I’m in my late twenties and neither German nor American, I still very much enjoy your videos and watching them really brings a lot of memories back from my teenage years. Love it, and you are too damn cute!! Im not german but danish, I’m however sure that my upbringing was very similar to my German neighbors, and that they will probably agree with me, when I say that one reason why boys aren’t asking girls out on dates and are not expected to do so, could be that we are not living in the 1950s anymore. Men are not superior to women and it is therefor more or less normal for the girl/woman to make the first step. The whole idea about it having to be the boy/man to ask the girl/woman out on a date, and for the girl/woman to wait for it to happen is in my opinion incredibly sexist and old school. Another reason could be the lack of dating culture, a date for me could just as easily be having a beer in the park or going to a party and honestly when I was a teenager, I never went on a date with someone I hadn’t already kissed and I never expected someone to ask me out unless we were already very much involved. As for the sleepover part, my parents never put up restrictions for sleepovers. My friends and I would have movie nights/sleepovers at age 13 and our male friends would be there too. When I got to the age where I started having boyfriends, my mum sat me down and made sure I knew about condoms, and the closest thing to a restriction was me promising that I would always use condoms or other contraception. I would crash at my male friends places all the time when I was in high school, and the school would even do sleepovers at the school where everyone would sleep in the same room. When fifty shades of grey was published we even did a book review on it in our English class. When we had gym classes in kindergarten and elementary school we would share dressing rooms and showers with the boys until the ages of 7 or 8. All in all, everything probably comes down to the fact that sex is natural, our bodies are natural, and there’s nothing wrong with either of them.
In my favorite theater in San Diego, in fact there are several of them, we get pizzas, hamburgers, nachos, anything you want in the movie theater. they even serve drinks if you're old enough. German men have become soft and feminine. they used to not be that way 30-40 years ago.
Come on Montana, from Passau to Austria you just have to cross river Inn. That can be just a few meters. It's like someone from El Paso having a gf/bf in Ciudad Juárez. The only difference is that the German-Austrian border is most probably easier to cross than from Chihuahua to Texas.
I absolutely feel the same about German boys being a bit shy. That's what I feel about myself though. Even when I had a gf...she was actually approaching me more than me approaching her 😅
funny, I actually thought having nachos in the theater swapped over from America. I love having them with warm cheese dip :-P I also like sweet popcorn.

@C J European girls watch a lot of American movies and series. They adapt to the American culture, partly unconsciously, partly deliberately.
Let's be honest: do you really know if you love somebody when you just started dating?
Another country? Well, Passau is right at the border, isn't it?

"Just talking" - is slang. It's not literal. To say we are "just talking", does not literally mean you are just talking.
Of course it can work out, yet seems less likely.
always vip slots in the cinema :D
dafür das du ein jahr drüben warst ist dein englisch sehr mau🤡
I just had to write a quick texts to let my host mum know
Probably another difference in teen dating is that in Germany they will meet in bars aswell incl beer or wine.
It is still okay do drink beer with 16
A good education about sex in the US is almost not existing, the most common lesson is, they teach you abstinence. What is far away from the reality and not helpful.
Maybe German boys or girls are a little bit more shy at the beginning, but it changed really fast when they know each other for quite a while.
And a lot of talk at the beginning doesn't mean that there is more happening until at the end. Talking without saying something.
It would make a good video to talk about the sex ed in the US vs Germany! :)

I feel like dating has more official rules in the US, like what stage of relationship you are supposed to be in after which date.
Obviously it's the same in the US idk where you heard that people date multiple people at once

If we don‘t want to tell someone that we got almost a relationship ship or feelings for someone we VERY OFTEN SAY „wir schreiben nur miteinander“ 😂😂😂 which means „we only text each other“ 🤣😂
Exactly
I think that there is a big cultural difference. In the US there is this "date concept" like you ask somebody if they want to go on a date with you and they say yes and then both parties kinda know that they "are on a date". Even if you didn't litteraly ask the person "out on a date" but rather said something like "Wanna see that movie ?" or "I was wandering if you'd like to grab coffe" You could then, later on - at least technically - ask the other person: "Just to be clear - is this a date?" and the other person could say: "of course" or "er no" (typically followed by awkward silence)
But whatever follows - everybody in the US has bought into that concept that "a date" is a more or less "official thing" you do in order to find out if you like somebody. Like at first you date, then you call it a relationship and then you get married and live happily ever after untill you get divorced. Many people even count dates and say things like: "On our third date, he was so sweet. He brought me flowers etc."
In Germany there is no such thing.
My experience:
The agegap thing: true!
The sleepover thing: true!
The popcorn thing: sweet popcorn is so good!
The shy thing: yup. It‘s not expected for them to make the first move
The snapchat thing: it‘s the same here with some people, but most ppl don‘t use it for dating
The school thing: true. It‘s also way more awkward when u break up so...
The club thing: true.

...Montana knwos how to get things started with the German boys!!!! :-D
Außer das “ich hab was mit jemanden” mehr als reden bedeutet 😂
Aber man trotzdem nicht in einer festen Beziehung ist.
Germany is about the same as here in The Netherlands. My first girlfriend lives in Belgium and I differ 15 years with my girlfriend, so I guess I fit your story ;)
Sweet popcorn is just a german thing. As an Austrian I was shocked that they eat sweet popcprn.

Normally in german clubs the people who are starting to talk to you don't really want to date you.

German men have become soft and feminine. they used to not be that way 30-40 years ago.
great video ❤ but "ich habe/hatte mit jemandem etwas" means that the relation got physical to some extent (kissing or more)
Come on Montana, from Passau to Austria you just have to cross river Inn.
I live in Georgia and our theaters serve nachos, beer, wine and sandwiches. This is a small college town.
