Two new versions of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, the UK and South African variants, were announced in December. They've spread quickly in their countries of origin, and have begun popping up around the world. Join us to find out what makes them different and how scientists plan to combat them.

Hm. Yep, I had to go back and re-read the name of this channel. It is indeed SciShow, which I assumed was short for "Science Show". Thankyou for educating!
Thanks for the info pals!
Here in the uk it’s been pretty scary watching the numbers explode since the new year. But the new lockdown is starting to work. New infections are dropping, so we know lockdowns still work. it’s just a shame our government waited over a week to bring it in as usual so things are way worse than they needed to be. Our health system is already over capacity in many places though and we’ve still got a week or so before we hit the peak of the spike in hospitalisations 😨
I hope other countries take it more seriously like the republic of Ireland has. Lockdown fast and hard, don’t give it a chance to get out of control
Nothing to take seriously about it. Same amount of people overall are dying. Deaths from heart disease and tuberculosis are just being relabeled as covid.
@@shr00mhead Only around 90k more people died in 2020 than an average year. Hospitals only around three times as full as the worst flu season since the 1970s. Nothing to worry about I'm sure 🙄
@@WhichDoctor1 No. 90,000 is not alot of people.
If lockdowns work, then why do you have more Covid deaths in the UK than in countries with less harsh lockdown rules? How come that Spain, France, Italy and the UK are worse off in Europe when they have the harshest lockdowns?
@@nattygsbord Because our government sucks. They always wait 1-2 weeks before doing anything. So the virus is already out of control before any measures are put in so it takes ages to get the infection down again. Also, they gave 10 billion pounds to a crony corporation to set up a track and trace system that has literally never been fit for purpose. So once the infection has finally been brought down by the prolonged lockdowns there's nothing to stop it flaring up again. They have also completely undermined the publics trust in them by very publicly backing a member of the government who spectacularly broke the rules. And I could go on, there is virtually no end to their cockups. We have had it really bad because we have a little wannabe populist in charge who couldn't organise a fart in a bean factory.
It's good @SciShow is trying to keep us informed.

Sars 2 panicdemic, not pandemic
@@ArythemB Panicdemic?
disease didn't exist until 2020! its trumps fault some how!
@@ArythemB I am a respiratory therapist and when our hospital was preparing for H1N1,the Swine Flu and other viruses that we were warned would cause massive amounts of infected people, we never had one case of any of these. There certainly is fear mongering. But this Covid is a different story
@@guillermoelnino everything is trumps fault. Even a lawyer can technically prove me right lol
Viruses mutate. They just do. Especially retroviruses like HIV or COVID-19. They use RNA polymerase to replicate instead of DNA polymerase. RNA polymerase has a *much* higher error rate and lacks the "proofreading" capabilities of DNA polymerase. At least that's what I learned in college (I have a Bachelor's in Biology).
SARS 2 Covid-19 is a bit different in that it does have proofreading capabilities so it has mutated "slower" than a typical RNA virus (however it still mutates quickly just slower than general mutations) it also isn't a retrovirus retroviruses undergo reverse transcription from RNA into DNA and embed themselves into the host genome more like DNA viruses making them effectively incurable.
A more worrying question is whether Covid does any of the viral recombination should two strains infect the same cell so far I don't believe there is any documented cases of that but it only needs to happen rarely to result in entirely new variants of a virus
@@Dragrath1 I know what a retrovirus is. I remember scientists and doctors saying early on and repeatedly that COVID-19 was one.
@@vic5015
Just want to clarify some misunderstanding for those reading through the comments: COVID-19 is the disease. SARS-COV-2 is the virus causing COVID-19. SARS-COV-2 is *NOT* a retrovirus at all. It is a single strand positive sense RNA virus within the coronaviridae family. It's in a completely different family of viruses and it's replication process is completely different than HIV.
SARS-COV-2 has good proofreading capabilities, actually. Scientists and physicians were not saying it was a retrovirus; the identification of the virus and its genomic sequencing was the first thing done. I have been monitoring the literature since February 2020.
(I'm a public health professional with my 1st graduate degree in public health from medical school, and now I've returned for my 2nd graduate degree in Biology focused in Biomedical science with my graduate research in the area of immunology of COVID-19).
Dragrath1 did a good job describing the replication process of actual retroviruses. SARS-COV-2 doesn't create the reverse transcriptase enzyme to do what retroviruses do.
i think you need to wasted a few years of education if you think call "COVID-19" (disease) a retrovirus.

Actually in Ireland (where the UK variant is suddenly rampant in the last 2 weeks) doctors are now saying that along with more people being sick they appear to be much sicker than before. Which would suggest the UK variant might be more deadly.
Of course they think so, they thought Sars 2 was going take out the human rase, nothing new
@@ArythemB Nobody thought this was going to take out the human race. The earliest projections were 300,000- 500,000 deaths in the US when it’s all over, which we’re sadly on target to hit.
That’s half a million people - not a complete wipeout of the species, but still a staggering and terrible toll, and each death is felt very strongly by the people left behind.
Not to rub in terrible news but I would refer you to this videos update which shows a 35% increase in deaths, although it's still a bit early to be definitive, there's not really a question of whether or not it's worse. It is.

Isn't a less deadly virus a more contagious virus
Not necessarily. If a virus is very difficult to spread, it would still be very low in contagiousness even if it's a disease that you have for years, constantly replicating, but not killing you.
Usually.
It can be, for sure. If you kill all your hosts off quickly, you can't really spread much, so it's advantageous for a virus to be able to lay low in it's host to up the chances of it spreading to others. But you can also have viruses with chronic symptoms that have a high chance of killing you, but after a period of time that's still allowed it to spread quite a bit. But generally it is sort of a see-saw between lethality and rate of spread.
