I really enjoyed re-watching this after all these years. Coronation Street going three times a week was a major event and somewhat ground breaking - we weren't used to this kind of thing, and we'd just lost Crossroads the year before. Love the blurring between the actors and the characters. 'Bet' and 'Alec' were a special joy to watch.
The date of this actual shown episode was from the 13th of October 1989 as the programme was called "Live from Coronation Street" according to the TV Times issue when it was transmitted at 7.30pm to 7.45pm, this was a week before a third episode was introduced to the half-hour slot in which that week featured the trial of Alan Bradley and the Ken/Wendy affair, as despite Cilla Black has had a exciting announcement in the soap's 29-year history that Corrie wouldn't be on twice a week. Its a real shame Granada Plus or ITV3 never repeated this special (as of according to that, it would've have been a copyright issue, as the ITV Granada team have still kept their copy in the vaults) which is now stood at Salford Quays.
Some storylines in the 2000s were good. Like the appearance of Ian McKellen and the book group. Again, the older cast intoxicated with Cannabis after the Hashbrownies. Richard Hilman was particularly dark, and whilst far fetched, it was acted superbly.
Cilla comes across so phony in this clip. I'm not convinced she even watched Coronation Street. Increasing the episode order of soaps is nothing to celebrate. It only dilutes the quality. Six times a week is obscene and the cash cow well and truly being milked dry.
Fascinating bit of old telly. Thanks for uploading. I don't remember Cilla like this, though. She's comes over as toe-curlingly fake on this clip.
She was

its lovely to see the old characters and our cilla in lockdown big thank you xx
When Coronation Street was MUST see telly. Not like the tripe now. Wonderful actors and scripts
It's funny how Mavis and Derek were played by Thelma BARLOW and Peter BALDWIN , when you consider the Ken and Mike story lines #BackInTheDay ;)
I remember watching this
Three a week... Soon to be six times a week... The beginning of the end
Stopped watching it years and years ago.....dreadful now.
Steven Cassidy less is more.
@@divaden47 Same here but do like watching the old episodes, newer ones in small doses

Very late 80s
Note to Corrie: delete.
The 80s, the best decade on coronation st,imo.

The Corrie Mascot - Cilla the rabbit.

The cast should have been scripted on this.
