So Vince was already sort of doing DM before he left, while Martin's earliest songs "Tora Tora Tora", "Big Muff", "The Meaning Of Love", and "See You" were ironically rather un-DM-like.

Oh my god! I forgot how amazing this live version is! This and Photographic Live at Something Else BBC are my two favourite Depeche Mode live tracks. The live versions out perform the studio versions IMO. It's the same with the live version of The Cure track Jumping on Someone Elses Train.
I don't know what it is, but no digital VST can live recreate the raw, unmitigated, electricity-through-wire sound of analogue synthesizers. More so if it's manhandled by relentless music pioneers like Vince Clarke.
