The BEST Budget Camera Monitor in 2023... And it's NOT ATOMOS?! || Desview R6 Review

- At nearly 1/3 of the price of the Atomos Ninja V, I want to introduce you to the DESVIEW R6, which in my humble opinion beats out any other camera monitor for the price when it comes to budget filmmaking.

he's got the lights, the camera, the lens with the deep depth of field (bokeh), the background stuff...it's all studio setup....and then like a complete tool he's using a $9 wired headphone microphone that he needs to hold and speak into...because that's whats "cool" these days. What an embarrassment. Pro life tip: when you're older and more secure with yourself, you're going to cringe at this version of you.
i apologize on behalf on whoever it is that hurt you while incorrectly using a lav mic! 😞😅
@@carleyandmatt😂 I'm still in counseling over it! Ps., don't feed the trolls (me) 😊
Great vid! considering to get this right now, I just really need a monitor to flip around so the people I record can see themselves and I think this well exceeds what I am looking for. Thanks!
Great info, thank!
nicely explained ! good work brother.
A better comparison would be to the Atomos Shinobi, since it is a monitor only device, Most people aren't getting the Ninja V/V+ for monitoring, unless your plan is to use the recording function in the future.
i realize that now! i unfortunately had never used the shinobi at the time of this video, therefore could only really compare what i had experience with!
Great presentation. I use the R6 with my bmpcc6k pro and absolutely love it! For those that need an external recorder then yes by all means get the atomos. But for my needs nailing focus is a breeze with 2800 nits.
that's exactly right! hard to beat that brightness for the price!
Wow, great option for sure! Excellent video 👌
no doubt! 🎉
I liked this review, it definitely sounds like a good monitor to consider. One thing I will mention is that, some cameras have RAW external recording capabilities only, for which you need.. well, an external recorder. That's the main reason why I was thinking of Ninja V.
Right now I am in between of buying the Shinobi from Atomos. Bu after seeing your honest review, I am pretty sold on the Desview R6. Currently I am stuck with a F100 from Neewer which became more and more trash the more I used it.
Dope video bro, definitely considering this for the price ! 🔥
thanks brother! for the price, it’s definitely hard to beat!
Great video, was considering the freewill 6 monito... but may get this one now :) Do you have a recommendation for a decent tilt neck fitting to attach the monitor to a cage? cheers
i use the tilta magic arm!! that way i can position the monitor anywhere id like
@@carleyandmatt Cheers Chief :)))
@@888berg happy new year mate!
Just to clarify the monitor doesn't have a battery indicator? How long would you say a medium Npf battery lasts?
a medium npf tends to last 2-3 hours depending on brightness from my experience! and yes unfortunately there is no battery indicator… 😢
Thanks for this review mam. I looked it up and I was surprised by the price. What a great deal! Thanks again.
my pleasure! thanks for watching 💪🏼
hows the battery life? I've heard that, when operating it at full brightness most NP batteries don't last longer than an hour, but what if only operating at indoor brightness levels. I realize this is a vague question but any insight?
honestly, i have found that i can operate it at almost full brightness for 2-3 hours on an npf970! the bigger ones of course
Hello, I'm an amateur, I don't really understand it, but according to your video, this Desview R6 UHB 5.5 monitor can't be used for dual video recording on the SD card of the monitor? Is that SD card just for recording LUTs? Not for video recording - do I understand that correctly?
that’s right; this monitor does not record and that SD card is only used for uploading LUTs to your monitor!
Hopefully it’s better than the R5 I got. The on/off button is stuck so the only way to turn off is by either removing the battery or the ac adapter. Other than that, it’s I-ite.
dang, sucks to hear! I can't speak to the build quality of the r5 but so far i have had no issues with the r6!
Can I see lut applied fotage through the Monitor HDMI output to another monitor? or record lut applied fotage straight hdmi output. is it laggy? R6ii out now can you upload informative video like this
i have never attempted to have a display lut display to another monitor, but i am assuming that it is not the case!
Would it work with Raw? Like Cinema DNG raw files? Thinking about using this with a Blackmagic cam.
i’ve used it with a pocket 6k without any issues! 👌🏼
Lets see more of the monitor please!!
Thank you so much
Can this record in 60 & 120fps?
Currently have a andycine that only shows display at 24fps
Can it Record at all ?
it cannot record in any way, BUT i’ve had no problem displaying any frame rate i need with the bmpcc6k
@@carleyandmatt bummer. Thx ✌️
Blah blah blah, way to much talking, how about SHOWING ! the actual monitor ! !
thanks for the tip 🫶🏼
Disagree? Have a different favourite monitor? Let me know in the comments below! ⬇️
how would you compare the R6 to the Osee Lilmon 5?
i have not had the pleasure of trying out the osee lilmon 5! i am currently working on a video comparing the r6 to the t5+ from osee so be on the lookout for that
what mic you use?
this is the tascam dr-10l, one of my favourite lav mics in the game!
Does it also takes time to turn on like the R5ii?
about 3-4 seconds yeah!
Are you using a lumix S5?
i am actually filming using the sony a7s2 in this video!
It’s good for editing pictures etc in photoshop?
i can’t say i’ve ever used a monitor for photography!
But whats the deal with the external recording on a monitor? do you mean the capability to press record from the monitor so the camera can record ?
some monitors like the atomos ninja v also have external recording capabilities, allowing you to record to an external SSD through your cameras hdmi port!
these monitors, being that they offer more than simply just monitoring, do come with much heftier price tags (300$ vs 800$) which is why i made a disclaimer saying that comparing these two monitors is a little difficult!
@@carleyandmatt i see
@Carley & Matt i just got one and I love it, wasn't expecting this great results
@@aperturefilm what did you end up picking up? the desview r6?
@@carleyandmatt yes, received while I had a shoot so I went back home to get it for the shoot and maan, I just love everything about it, touch is very responsive and easy to use etc
And how does it work for photography use? ✌️
with a 12mp sensor it won’t necessarily match up in terms of quality with other photo-based cameras, but it’ll get the job done!
Does the R6 work with log (fuji xt2 F-log)?
yes it does! my favourite feature is that you can upload your favourite/most used LUTs to the R6 and toggle them on/off to get an idea of what your final footage might look like!
@@carleyandmatt Uploading LUTs is one thing. What I need is a monitor that will work when the camera is set to LOG (not 1080p). LUTs are normally applied over LOG. The budget monitors I've tried will go black when set to LOG setting. Iphone apps too. Screen will black out with any setting other than 1080p.
@@peter-iq5en interesting! i only ever shoot in log profiles and I have never had a problem with the R6 displaying even just the log footage without a lut!
@@carleyandmatt That's all I needed to know. Hope it works with my fuji xt2's F-log, Thanks.
No idea why someone wants to record via a monitor, I mean, that's what the camera is for? Desview R6 ordered, thanks for the review ... seems cheap and effective for "monitoring".
Recording monitor can allow you to record better codecs or even RAW for example, which most prosumer camera are not able to record in camera, you can also bypass 30mn recording limit that some cameras have, and being able to record on SSD gives plenty more storage than SD cards :)
@@XavierMaire1 Ah I see ... my Sony A7RV will only output 3.8K RAW via HDMI. Unless I'm doing quick and dirty, I'm usually capturing with S-Log3 to my camera's CFExpress card.
The manufacturers site does show a battery monitor
since this video, i have found how to enable a battery monitor!!
Only records up to 1080p whereas others record a full 4K. This makes this kind of obsolete in the modern marketplace unfortunately. It would be a buy for me, if it had other record formats. I guess that's how they keep the price so low. Good review!
Does this shoot in Raw? And does it recored on an ssd?
it is unfortunately not equipped to record, only monitor! so if you’re looking for an external recording option, you’ll be looking at smallhd or atomos
It can't record so why would I want it?
if you want a recorder and not just a monitor, then you don’t want it!
Interesting, but comparing this Desview monitor to an Atomos Shinobi would’ve been more relevant.
Another significant drawback of this monitor is that it doesn’t accept 4k60. You won’t be too bothered by this with the A7sii, but an increasing number of people will be annoyed by the fact that you have to set your HDMI out accordingly
One of dislike atoms V is energy consumption.
i would agree!
Not even a true comparison, this would have been better against the Shinobi at $299
You are right I did click as the comparison to the Ninja was intriguing but falls under clickbait 😂. I have a Ninja V and a Shinobi, so thinking you had another recording monitor would have not been a waste of time…. Since I’m here I may as well comment.
Try not to do comparisons with that much spread in price and features it will surely make people not come back to your content even if you make great content.
i appreciate your insight! i did make a disclaimer stating that the comparison was based on 2 very different monitors, as these are the only two that i have any experience with.
i would not have felt good about comparing this monitor to one i’ve never used before! 🙌🏼
I honestly enjoyed the comparison and appreciate it even with the large price difference. From someone looking into possibly buying their first monitor and was looking at the Atomos V since that’s what mostly has been popping up, a budget friendly alternative was/is a nice eye opener to help decide to go more budget friendly or save and get the more expensive product. Appreciate the video!

you still loving this?
yup! no hesitation, still loving this thing!
@@carleyandmatt thank you. Should be in my hands tomorrow night. Any idea how many standard size canon batteries will get me through a wedding day?
@@Soul_Visuals_Photography can’t say for sure! i’ve only ever used the sony npf batteries with it, depending on the wedding day i would say 3-4 if always left on
@@carleyandmatt ok thanks so much
You make videos. Just put the mic on your shirt. I'm not sure what the trend of people holding mics like an early 2000s bad headset on a phone call is, but please just clip it to your shirt.
thanks boss, i'll keep that in mind for the next one 🥰
@carleyandmatt sorry if it felt like a rant, it is just a weird thing going on right now in the zeitgeist. You're doing good otherwise.
How about you put a mic on and record a video! Folk got everything to say & don’t have to guts to show up on camera! Be quiet or stop watching!
@waltjennette well I do video production for a living. This is my personal account. I have done voice work for the likes of the Secretary of Defense before, I have helped a few hundred people with their YT content. I do put my face out regularly with a non-profit that I run and do multiple live shows a week.
Have a good day sir.
Wanted to see the monitor, not you.. 99% of the the time is filming you. Why?
youtube is a learning process, what can i say! 🤙🏻
im sorry but i just cant trust advice from a man holding that microphone
hahahaha i’m sorry you feel that way… i don’t blame you
To much talking ...dislike
usually that’s what review videos are 🤔
Did not use capitalization at start of sentence when replying to someone…double dislike! (Sarcasm) 😂😂😂
haha touché… capitalization is overrated 😉

Wtf it's a review what did you expect
