This is the only handmade buttonhole video that should be allowed on RUclips. This is the way my grandmother taught me to do buttonholes, but I had forgotten - thank you for the truly wonderful video.
After struggling with buttonholes on my machine, I turned at last to RUclips to try to learn how to make them proper, by hand. You lot caught my eye because I’ve got fam in Lancashire. (I’m in California now, so you’re brilliant to listen to, I must tell you.) No surprise: this is the best lesson I’ve had. I had better get started on my one hundred, then.
Having sewn a bunch of hand-stitched buttonholes this year, I can honestly say, her level of regularity and precision is incredible. My buttonholes are quite functional, but still an irregular mess with their appearance. Compared to Izzie, anyway. She remains my hand-stitching heroine.
This is my second or third time watching this video. I have been sewing shirts for my four kids and this was so helpful. Thanks to you and Izzy! I’m now on my 7th buttonhole. Only 93 more to go before I get good at them.
We were looking for something much simpler for home sewing, but stopped to watch this just for the pleasure of watching such beautiful, professional work. Thank you!
Have to say this lady doe's stunning work. My Nana was taught in England at Savol Row. And also my uncle was taught there as well. So it was only natural I did an apprenticeship over here in New Zealand at a place called Austin Browns.Right now I'm into crafting and quilting. So love to sew.And this lady is so very very Talented and a joy to watch. Could watch her all day. HAPPY SEWING TO YOU ALL.
You are so right! A buttonhole stitch is one of the hardest stitch and also easy. I now have ten to do for my cardigan. Hope they come out half as well as yours. Thanks for the inspirational video since I am self taught.
Thank you for taking the time to share with us how to do these things. That is absolutely beautiful! This reminds me of learning to sew from my mother. She had beautiful hand sewing technique, as well. One of my first garments was a lovely Vogue jumper with three large buttons down one side. To this day, I remember watching her do the buttonholes for me, and they were as exquisite as any embroidery ever done. Such perfection! I see the same perfection here! I now want to relearn how to do true buttonholes, after watching this! Absolutely beautiful!!!
👍Absolutely terrific demo & tutorial. Thank you. 💞 Seeing her do the handmade button hole took me back to my childhood. My mom was a seamstress and made her own clothes and forced me to do the same. I spent a lot of hours helping her. Practicing handmade button holes was one of those things I had to perfect to make her happy and I came to enjoy it actually. 💞
Wonderful work, have been looking for a video on hand sewn buttonholes and this was just what I wanted. My late Mother was very good, but died to young to teach me. Thank you, so pleased your there!
By far the best, most clear, and most detailed buttonhole instructional I've come across. I now see that I've been over-tightening my thread. Brilliant, thank you!
Izzy your buttonholes are beautiful. The level of precision and skill is astounding. I was trying to fix a frayed buttonhole on a linen vest & it has been years since I actually made a buttonhole.. and that was on an old Singer. Well... here goes & lets hope my embroidery skills will help me not make a mess of it. BRAVO again on both the wonderful video and Izzys phenomenal skills.
Your totorial was great I never thought buttonholes could be sewed without a machine. It kept me from making thins that required buttons thank you so much.
thank you for the lovely and totally professional video. I had last sewn buttonholes about 17 years back and learning to make them with gymp was really enriching.
It's funny you should say that. I wear very strong glasses, for both distance and reading, Somehow I can still thread the tiniest eye in sewing needles. My sewing isn't really affected....Go figure🤔
Thank you so much for sharing your skill! I love tailoring and have always regretted not taking an apprenticeship when I was in my early teens under a master tailor here in the United States. Lovely work.
So Happy to Watch your video my mother worked for Burton in Leeds. She did all the hand stiches on the jackets, infatti my mum tought me to sew by hand,i am watching your video as i Need to learn how to make Burton holes as my sewing machine does not allow me to create a very large Button holes, the young lady infact Is very neat and expert in her sewing.Thankyou for your video God Bless.👍😍👋
I am refurbishing a vintage London Fog trench coat. The top buttonhole was a mess of worn threads. This video was just what I need to proceed to re-sew the edges of the buttonhole! Many thanks!
Dear Sir, this beyond any doubt whatsoever, is the only handmade buttonhole video that should be allowed on RUclips. You are the maestro of this craft. Hats off to you sir Thanks for this video
Thank you very much for your time & effort. I am not sure of my ability to fully convey my appreciation for this video! The final buttonhole is beautiful & I pray my efforts will produce one half as nice, with much practice! Thank you!
I now watched and tried this a few times. It looks better and better. You are guidning me in completing my first suit jacket. Thank you very much. Cheers from Stockholm!
This lady is fantastic. What is the depth of stitch. I tried to make a button hole and I did it all wrong. Thank you thank you. I enjoyed this demo very much. Now practice, practice, and practice some more.
I have watched button hole videos and yours is gonna be the one I go to. I have a button hole to do and I’m scared lol but this video makes it seem doable for me. Thank you!!
Thanks for posting this. I thought I'd have a go and as luck would have it, the day after I watched this first I found a punch in the charity shop. It did the trick but as you say it needs a backing to avoid 'exit wound'. I couldn't find any gimp in the shops but I practised using some thin rope cord out of old boot laces I was replacing. I found some gimp since on ebay but it's vintage, so might be degraded. It's going to take me forever to do 100 buttonholes.
This is the best tutorial I've seen... great skills, well explained... I am new to sewing but will practice this... to be able to do it well... Sir you are a wonderful teacher.... and Izzy great skill ... Thank you Both... I hope to see more tutorials of you both
Excellent, thank you for sharing this knowledge! The buttonhole was so well made I kept wondering what the finished jacket looked like and it's only a patch of fabric!
Thank you for making such a clearly explained video. Izzy your fine needlework is beautiful. I will have a go myself now, just need to find where to get some gimp here in France.
Much prefer sewing buttonholes by hand, they seem to last longer, but have never heard of gimp before. Must look for it but the advice that the cotton/silk always goes clockwise around the needle will be a great help. Mum still has, and uses, the lump of beeswax her father used, will remember to iron the thread afterwards as this wasn't taught in school, though they spent loads of time teaching how to on a machine. Many thanks for a great tutorial, and found just as I am sewing a winter coat or three. Perfect timing.
This is a superb tutorial. I really wish you'd post more videos. I've subscribed anyway in the hope that you do. What amazing craftsmanship ! Thank you for your time and effort.
Wow thank you! I sure hope you make more videos.. I've been sewing my while life, mostly custom draperies, and costumes.. I just love being able to learn still 👍👏👏
What a work of art!! That is such a beautiful buttonhole, Izzy, and a very well-made video tutorial. I can't wait to start making my first 100 buttonholes now! I've been sewing for years and years, but only ever made machine buttonholes, and was never really satisfied with them. I'll definitely try hand-sewn buttonholes now. Just one question, and you may have answered it already but I missed it, what is gimp, and why is it needed? Many thanks!
Gimp is used so the hand stitches don’t sink into the weave of the cloth, it “lifts” the stitches and also helps them look tidier. Could also use two strands of a topstitch thread if you can’t find gimp
I've been dressmaking since age 11 and embroidering since before that. I HATE handsewing these fiendish things mine have always looked tatty. Now I HAVE to do some, and trawling for help I've stopped here! Thank you 😊😊

I've watched about a dozen hand sewn buttonhole tutorials now. I believe this to be the best of them. Lovely work, Izzy! Thanks for sharing this.
rmcdaniel423 I totally agree! This was the first I watched that recommended using a gimp to line the hole. Great video...I wish he made more!!!
Watching this again, a year later. . . . . "brilliant". LOL
Having sewn a bunch of hand-stitched buttonholes this year, I can honestly say, her level of regularity and precision is incredible. My buttonholes are quite functional, but still an irregular mess with their appearance. Compared to Izzie, anyway. She remains my hand-stitching heroine.

Best buttonhole instruction on RUclips, IMHO. Thank you. I keep coming back to this as I work up to my own 100 buttonholes.
By far the best, most clear, and most detailed buttonhole instructional I've come across. I now see that I've been over-tightening my thread. Brilliant, thank you!

great job,my grandma taught me many hand stiches, buttonholes being one of them, this is very close to her method. though she was from South Texas ,USA
This is the best instruction of button holes I've seen. Will return thank you, as always can always rely on Yorkshire to get advice
thank you for the lovely and totally professional video. I had last sewn buttonholes about 17 years back and learning to make them with gymp was really enriching.
Lol the commentaries are entertaining, but that buttonhole though... wow I am super impressed!
It is amazing how a plain buttonhole can be an item of admiration if done so artistically. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope they pay you alot because this type of buttonhole is pure skill and I really appreciate the work that you all do

Thank you for including how to prepare the silk. This is the best buttonhole tutorial I've seen.
I am refurbishing a vintage London Fog trench coat. The top buttonhole was a mess of worn threads. This video was just what I need to proceed to re-sew the edges of the buttonhole! Many thanks!
Always love watching this video to remind me, before I do any hand worked buttonholes.Thank you so much for sharing.

Wonderfully skilled hands! I hope you feed the owner of those hands well! ;-)

Wow thank you! I sure hope you make more videos.. I've been sewing my while life, mostly custom draperies, and costumes.. I just love being able to learn still 👍👏👏
Excellent video. The only thing I would add is to measure the button so we know exactly how long the button hole should be.
What a beautiful buttonhole, excellent work.
Beautiful work just beautiful.....I also use gutterman...they are the best I have found
This tutorial is perfect and so so helpful! Thank you so much, this is what I needed :)
Love this. It's the best and very professionally done
To strengthen the buttonhole so the fabric doesn't tear or frey.
Gimp is used so the hand stitches don’t sink into the weave of the cloth, it “lifts” the stitches and also helps them look tidier. Could also use two strands of a topstitch thread if you can’t find gimp
Thank you. Precise and beautiful craft.
Best buttonhole tutorial I’ve seen. 👏👏👏
