Thanks for the excellent video. I've done four now and they are getting better, fast. No more struggling with buttonholes on a domestic sewing machine - they always need several practices to get all the settings right and never come out that well anyway.
They are so much easier to fasten - you dont think thats a big issue, but when the wind and rain gets up and you have two dogs and you want to do the top button of your coat up with one hand -- you really appreciate the effort you put in the doing the button holes by hand...
I watched another show where they've made a four piece bespoke suit to a customer and the last phase where the tailor "blessed" the suit before sewing buttonholes. It was amazing and eye opening for me to see such quality but they've left the part out when they did the buttonholes. Weeks later I put on an old blazer I had laying around and looked at the buttonholes and wondered how they've where made by hand. Found this video that answered it completly! Also happy to see another left handed person use the needle, other tutorials with right handed people sometimes confuse my brain when I try to replicate it with the left hand. Thank you for this video!
Believe me,zigzag machines don't do a pretty buttonhole either. 53 years on, I'm finally learning to sew a nice one instead of bound buttonholes (cos they were the only ones I could do properly)
You score 110% on the quality of professional bespoke buttonholes, and your great closeup camera work. I have a few points/questions. # 1 You referred to both threads as Gutterman silk, but the overlocking one clearly says Gutterman polyester. # 2 I've seen one tailor pin down the gimp at the opposite end of the buttonhole when first starting out; it helps to keep the gimp straight and reduce movement; they don't pin through the gimp, just pin over and under the gimp. #3 You mentioned the gimp wasn't the optimal one you'd like to use. I watched your video where you went to a major haberdashery store in London and couldn't find suitable gimp. Why is suitable gimp so difficult to find? If you have challenges find something suitable in London, you can imagine the challenges we have in North America!
Those look wonderfully neat. I love the more substantial look, the gimp gives them. I did not know, there was a specific product for this. Great tutorial 👍
Bought a suit with hand sewn button holes and they're really stiff and substantial. I'd heard people saying you can tell the difference and never believed them before. I'll leave the sewing to the experts but interesting to see the process.
Nice to see a button hole done by hand. Thanks for sharing. A labor of love since most are done with machines these days. But the hand-made ones are really durable, strong and long- lasting.
I came here specifically because the guy from Gentleman's Gazette uses hand sewn button holes, among other, as a tell tale of a good quality suit. I am grateful to have found you🤗. Now I have to find out what gimp is and where to buy it.😱
@@JemimaCassidy Amazon has it in many many beautiful bright colors. I didn’t get any further than all the colors to check whether or not they carry brown etc.
Hello thank you for a superb tutorial just what I was looking for , for my jacket. Please could you tell me is there a size in the gimp thread you are using and if so would you mind telling me. Thank you so very much you are a very talented beautiful sewer.
hello! you can order gimp thread and silk thread online - for example on amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/Gütermann-Agreman-Gimp-Buttonhole-Thread/dp/B00E3DG6HG www.amazon.co.uk/Gutermann-Luxurious-Sewing-Thread-White/dp/B019HRO796/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1N92YSTKUOOT5&keywords=silk+thread+gutermann&qid=1645528829&s=kitchen&sprefix=silk+thread+gutermann%2Ckitchen%2C64&sr=1-2
Hey can i ask how you cut the button hole before stitching? I make Japanese denims, would be a nice touch on them. Maybe without the gimp! Great button holes by the way 😊
thank you! mark out where you want to make your cut with tailors chalk and i'd recommend first punching a hole at the end where the button hangs on. Then using small, sharp embroidery scissors (for example) make the cut of the button hole in one cut. Don't trim it as you can risk making the hole a bit wide and it then leaves a gap that you don't want. Hope this helps :)
Love this tutorial, this is one layer how does it work with the facing? my vest is finished so with the facing on... can I still do a button hole like this??
Jemimima do you have video for stitching the suit lining I have one quite old Attolini suit that I wish I can change the suit lining.Suit itself is entirely handsewn
it's called gimp. It's hard to find in a sewing shop, but you should find it in a tailoring shop/center. It's a very thick thread with a little wire in it and the aim is to keep the buttonhole firm and structured. You need gimp to make the best buttonholes.
Those aren’t fringey cringey sparse famine-style buttonholes. Those are REAL lush full buttonholes. Which puts your tutorial way ahead of the crafty crowd. Yours are a fine art, not a craft.
Question: @4:30 , do you poke through both the fabric and the lining, or just through the front fabric? If the point is to have the tail hidden between the two layers, what is best: going through both or just the first? Also, can you tie a knot at the end of the thread to act as a lockstitch?
you can just poke through the the fabric and slide the needle inbetween both layers to the starting point of the button hole (and come out). therefore when you cut the knot off at the end then you dont see the rest of the thread. Good question! I had just shown the example on fused wool without lining so it's great you asked!

I wish it were done on a lighter colored fabric, maybe using a contrasting thread. Also it is harder to stitch buttonholes on two ply fabric because the layers shift. Please make a video on a real jacket/coat.
Hi! So I don’t give a full verbal explanation in this video here: ruclips.net/video/p1DWQWoXIOU/видео.html But it’s in coloured thread so maybe it will be more helpful seeing it. Let me know xx
Watching a hand sewing tutorial made by a fellow lefty has been one of the best experiences of my life.
this made my day :)
As a professional dressmaker for the past 40 years, I can’t tell you how impressed I am with your video and skill! Great work.

This is by far the best tutorial for hand bound buttonholes I have ever seen. Thank you so much. I’m excited to try my hand at making them!
thank you so much! I am sure you'll master them :)
Wonderful tutorial! My grandmother always complained that no machine buttonholes were as good as handsewn. Now I understand her meaning.
thank you! i agree with your grandma :)

Excellent. One bespoke tailor to another, every single detail of your instruction is classic, time-honored tradition of the craft. Bravo.

This is as good as it gets. Being able to hand sew button holes is very empowering when you only own a straight stitch old school machine 😊

im on a newer machine and i find myself making more mistakes with the automatic bar tacking stitch than when i do it manually like this lol
Streight stitch vintage machine is what I use for bespoke tailoring. ALL zig zag machines give a ~~~~~~~~ looking stitch not a -----------

thank you!! happy to see more lefties around! :)

Left handed AND metric 🙂
Thank you so much :)

Your video really helped in understanding how to make a buttonhole. I can’t wait to try and make my own buttonhole. Thank you for sharing. 😊

Love this tutorial, this is one layer how does it work with the facing? my vest is finished so with the facing on... can I still do a button hole like this??
thank you! The buttonhole has to go though the layers in order for it to be functional, even the facing or lining etc.
Thank you. That was the best demo I saw.
Thank you so much ☺️
Thank you, You're a wonderful instructor!
thank you so much! appreciate it :)
thank you great job not taking that camera off the work!
Just love this! Very detailed, very clear!

nice tutorials thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching

Anyone know where to find gimp thread or a substitute?
hello! you can order gimp thread online - for example on amazon:

What tool did you use to make the hole?
A hole puncher
Thank You!
Good 👍
Thanks
Very even stitches. 😊
thank you!
Since gimp is so hard to fine, aren’t you using a little more than necessary. Did you use beeswax on the silk??? Maybe, I missed it.
for the bespoke buttonhole I always use gimp. It makes a big difference. and yes I do use beeswax for the thread - but not the silk thread.
What size buttonhole punch do you use???
How did you cut the hole that round one...?
with a button hole puncher. you can see it in the first few seconds of my other video here: ruclips.net/video/p1DWQWoXIOU/видео.html

in london. It's generally very hard to find.
Se x caso abbiamo sbagliato il lato dove fare l'asola. ...come rimediare
Why didn’t you show how you cut the button holes?
Пардон муа, это на каком изделии петля вымётывается на одном слое проклеенной ткани? Почему бы тебе не показать , как бы это делаешь на борте пальто?
Using thin dark thread over thick dark fabric made this difficult to follow.
