He takes the sacrifice so he can play on a team that is in full winning mentality which is where he probably wants to be

Starter all day. I think you underrated his defense a touch his plus minus is always very good and he’s not always playing with all the starters this year particular his range has increased in his ability to come off screens and get his shot off cleaner is much improved so I think he’s a very very quality point guard . Defensively he pressures the ball and can interrupt the ball handler pretty effectively. I could see where teams are try to isolate them in the post can’t argue that.

Fair points. Mazzulla has spoken highly of Payton on defense. Yeah I was referring to him getting posted up and that would happen more in the playoffs

Eh, no one wants to be paid less than they’re worth. He may be willing to sacrifice, but make no mistake, he’ll look at it as a sacrifice.

His defense will be more of a problem when he’s in the starting lineup. Playing against the 2nd team is working.

Easily 6th MOY and I hate the Celtics. Brad Stevens didn't play him and gave him a "nothing" contract...

Stevens played him exactly how his contract said he should be played.
In the NBA, one's playing time and on-court participation levels are 100% allocated according to the union contract and relative to a team's other statused players.
Until this season PP was on a rookie contract which says he has no status on a team stacked with premium non-rookie-contracted players.
When his contract came up for renewal, PP could have walked and tested the open market. He declined to do so. That's on PP.
He may have gotten a better contract and/or a better situation, or.....he may not have. He took the familiar "bird in the hand" contract.
And....unfortunately there is only so much money, minutes, and statistics to go around, so Stevens, the GM, has to do what all GM's have to do with low-level status, but high-level talent, he offered PP what the going rate was for PP's status which is not necessarily equal to performance.
In the NBA there are more good players than there are participating positions so some talent gets low-balled. Fair? No. Life? Yes.
Davidson, in basically the same situation, is stuck in the G with no escape. PP never had to climb that wall and has always been on the parent team, but his pay is capped if he chose to remain a Celt, which he did.
Next up to get low-balled: Walsh. Same situation, no minutes equals no accolades, and no accolades means no massive paycheck, but he is a high-level player whom Stevens would like to retain on a similar bargain contract when Walsh is due for his contract upgrade.
LBJ and Chris Paul negotiated the previous CBA in which the top two contracts for each team can take up to 70% of the entire team's salary. Great for about 30 players, not so good for the other 330 players, (or fans).
That's how the NBA operates and is not specific to Stevens.

Not a great iso player? His primary skill is ball handling he would cook more if hes not playing with tatum brown and porzingis

I would consider Tatum a great ISO player and in my opinion Payton isn’t on that level
