I blame the police for enforcing unconstitutional laws that prevent law-abiding American citizens from protecting themselves. Hence, the police are not the cause of the problem, but they are one of the primary reasons it continues to exist. The other reason is the American male is becoming more effeminate and would rather be protected by other males than assume any responsibility for protecting himself or others.

Yeah! This shouldn't have been the police's responsibility; if the kids' parents were good at their job, this event wouldn't have happened in the first place! Kids shouldn't be allowed to go out with their friends and skateboard in a public place! That would be too much like the nostalgic freedom and innocent mischief of childhood that every boomer likes to fondly remember. You heard it here, folks; if you allow your adolescent child to go out and figure out how to navigate the city, mistakes and all, so they can grow into an independent adult, you're a bad parent.

TLDR: Hold the young people accountable for their crimes, BUT why was a massive riot-mobilized police force sent there in the first place??
IMO the police were right to hold accountable those who were throwing stuff at them, defacing property, etc. --- BUT, why were the police sent there in massive numbers with riot gear in the first place?? Why is the news not explaining that aspect? Why did the chief feel like he had to proactively shut this event down, considering it was tolerated in previous years? If the police presence hadn't been so overwhelming and militarized, instead just a handful of officers keeping tabs on the event in case any crime or accident happened, I suspect the anti-police sentiment in some of these young people wouldn't have been triggered. Looks like the throwing and graffiti didn't start until the police army showed up and started trying to shut the event down. If that's true, the police weren't there to arrest people for assault or property damage, but simply to shut down this event. You're GOING to get some angry young people if you try that move. The police showing up in force is the primary reason this event escalated into a riot, instead of just being a fun spectator sports event. The news has not indicated that this event has a history of turning into a crime spree / riot; only that skaters sometimes seriously injure themselves, which is a risk they have the awareness and right to take on, imo.

Even though the San Francisco "Park Rangers" are civilian employees and Not cops, they are being militarized with their aggressive, intimidating uniforms excessively carrying batons and unnecessary double magazine holders. The parks should be family and community oriented places and these park rangers should not have any weapons, including batons, on them at all. Just the army green color of their uniforms make them look like soldiers in wars. Adding their star shaped badges make them look like sheriff deputies and state police units. Also the park rangers vehicles appear too similar to law enforcement vehicles, especially when they turn on their white spot lights causing unaware and frighten drivers to instinctively pull over for them.
Much more often nowadays, a few park rangers try to act like cops. Just yesterday, I saw one "park ranger" (the big chubby looking African American one) asking a driver only parking on the street for identification documents. It was Not even in the parks!! On many times in Golden Gate Park during the day, I saw the short, bulky Asian one trying to stop moving vehicles, literally trying to make traffic stops and trying to ask for driver's licenses. Just the other day, a "park ranger" recklessly chased down a vehicle for a suspected parking violation near 20th and Dolores. This is so dumb and what could go wrong. People are not required to talk or show them anything to these wannabe park employees. These wannabe park employees are begging for trouble.
There needs to be critical changes to the San Francisco park rangers, so they do not get mistaken for law enforcement.
First, amend their job title to one that more closely reflect their duties and responsibilities, such as "park service officers", "park monitors", "park ambassadors", etc.
Second, drastically change their uniforms and their badges to the light blue color shirts and the shield shaped or round badges like the ones similar to the parking enforcement. Also, restrict any weapons, including batons.
Third, modify their park ranger vehicles emblem/logo to look like other city vehicles with the city seal. Only allow amber color warning lights with amber color lenses to make it known that they are not law enforcement. As they monitor the police dispatch calls to try to respond, but instead interfere with the work of first responders while doing unnecessary assistance, discontinue and disallow any police scanner capabilities inside their vehicles.
    You can make changes!!
Please contact your district board of supervisors representative to express these serious concerns. Although most departments, particularly the ones dealing with social welfare will have their budget cutted, the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department is expected to have their upcoming budget increased for even more park rangers to harass innocent park patrons. You!!
Would you rather have more park service employees to collect paychecks or funds to support people in need to afford basic essentials, like food and shelter?
