  • A local police officer has been fired after video of a shocking traffic stop with a teenager.
Social Circle Police Chief Tyrone Oliver said, along with threatening and cursing out a 17-year-old boy during a traffic stop on November 23, former Officer James Sanders violated policies. Oliver decided to fire Sanders, an 8-year-veteran on the force, Thursday.
Oliver said an anonymous woman called asking him to investigate, after she said, Sanders pulled over a car and "cussed out" teenagers. The Chief reviewed body camera and dash cam video from the incident.
He said it showed Sanders at a traffic stop with another officer when a black Jeep rode by. Sanders heard one of the four passengers in the Jeep yell, "F---- the Police." At that point, he followed the car and pulled it over on North Cherokee Road, according to Oliver.
In the footage, Sanders can be seen yelling at the occupants. He also singled out the teenager who admitted to yelling the profanity-laced remark. Oliver said Sanders also urged the teenager to fight him.
"The teen kept saying, 'No, I don't want to do it.' And he's like, 'No, you're a tough guy...,'" Oliver said.
Oliver told FOX 5's Marissa Mitchell the video also shows Sanders threatening to search the Jeep and its passengers to see if they had marijuana.
"He did state that he pulled them over for failure to maintain lane. When you look at the video, the vehicle did hit the white line but it was after he was coming up on them with a high rate of speed," Oliver insisted.
Oliver added Sanders has three other disciplinary actions on his record, including a written reprimand in 2014 for allegedly threatening staff at a high school while on duty. Oliver said school officials weren't happy with
security Sanders provided and wanted to talk with him before paying him. In turn, Sanders threatened to mail anthrax to the school and "blow up" the building, according to the police chief. Oliver also said Sanders received an oral warning in 2013 for refusing to transport money from municipal court to the city hall and he was given a written warning for failing to turn in activity sheets in January 2016.
"In this profession, we have to have tough skin. People say stuff to us all the time and you got to let it roll off your back and do your job and do it right," Oliver said.

@Adelaide Trinity Maybe, but you would not need video if a common citizen had made threats like that. Police brutality is not simply a race issue, although that does play a part. It's as much about absolute power unchecked.

First--thanks for your service I salute you. I had a gun rammed into my head, balls grabbed and squeezed, everything you can imagine to try to get me to take a swing at them so they could beat me half to death and then charge me with assault to justify the beating, which they would have won in court as 'everyone believes a cop in court' and the only witnesses were other cops. What saved me was knowing their MO and (childish as it sounds) repeating to myself over and over: "Not now, don't fight them now, come back tomorrow or next week and blow the whole station to pieces if your going to take them on." I knew far worse outcomes then mine. My "crime"?....resisting arrest via running from them, there was no reason for the arrest given other than that. That was in the early '80's, some things never seem to change.

In my day cops didn't have to act like this b/c the parents would beat the shit out of me if I'd have done this, AFTER the cop beat my ass & wrote me up for disorderly conduct. Now, thanks to tube steaks like yourself kids are out of control crybabies needing 'safe places' and unable to cope with real life and riot when they don't get their way. And don't talk to me about the cops cursing when every rap song they listen to or movie they watch has much worse in it. Our society has gone to shit thanks to chumps like you.

And I bet he is at another department, you fire them all that's does is appease the public. Then they just go to work at another agency often with the help of the very department that fired them! YOU HAVE TO DECERTIFY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS! If you do not pull their certification they will still be in the system. We also need to start holding police PERSONALLY responsible and make them pay out of pocket for legal expenses. Take their personal property, police certification and if warranted (funny word) jail them. These guys keep showing up because WE LET THEM. Fire them and the next "blue" uniform they have will be that sweet little Blue Wal-Mart vest. These guys know they can act with impunity because they have the backing of the entire government and various "fraternal" organizations to defend them legally.
