    I've loved Theda Bara since I was a teenager. I've read every biography, seen every movie, collected all the pictures, you name it. Thank you so much for this, I love hearing about her.
    Edit: most of her films were destroyed when Fox burnt down. The ones that do survive in their entirety are among the least popular. She never had children. I believe she died of stomach cancer.

      One exception: “A Fool There Was,” featuring her breakout role, still exists in its entirety. Fun film, too.

      That's why it was so important for actors to establish themselves in multiple roles. A big breakout role or a character the actor fits so perfectly can be a detriment later. Bet we can name hundreds who were typecast.

      Charles and Theda's house was on my route to school and, most afternoons, he would greet me and we would have a chat about school and my friends. He was "Uncle Charlie", a kind, tall Englishman, and we were great friends. He always asked me to come inside and "say hello to aunt Theda". Usually, she was in the bedroom, lying under the covers. She invariably said, "Give Aunt Theda a kiss", wich I dutifully did. We would talk for a few minutes and then Uncle Charlie and I would retreat to the kitchen for cookies and chocolate milk before I resumed my walk home. I never knew that she was the "seducer vamp." until much later. She was just a very sweet lady who obviously had affection for children. Looking back, it ws a lovely time of innocence, when my parents never worried and our front door was always open.

Those who are interested in Theda Bara can find more in Cari Beauchamp's wonderful biography of screenwriter Frances Marion, a good friend of Theda and her sister, Lori Bara: "Without Lying Down: Mary Pickford, Frances Marion, and the Powerful Women Of Early Hollywood." Glad she found happiness after she retired from show biz! The studios owned their employees back then and as the saying goes "fame comes with a price" I really love the gothic look she had and she definitely would
    have been well loved amongst fashion trendsetters during the early punk rock years
    and those who embraced that fashion sense there after and now. I'm definitely gonna check our public library catalog and see if it lists any of her films! For some reason I always thought she was a stage actress in the theatre

    Even though she came to hate being a movie star it did bring her wealth and comfort, and brought her out to CA where she met and fell in love. She was doing better than the average American back then, and lived in huge homes when the average American lived in a very small home. And lucky because her looks were not out of the ordinary.

    Great vlog! I'm 46 and of course I've seen/heard "kiss me you fool". Always kinda thought it was attributed to Greta Garbo.
    Keep doing these vlogs Jordan, because some of us need them to connect the dots between what we know and what we think we know.

    • @lemorab1
      @lemorab1 6 лет назад

      The actual line is "Kiss me, my fool," and it's from "A Fool There Was." This film is execrable by today's standards and nearly unwatchable, if it wasn't for that infamous line. Greta Garbo's 1926 film, "A Woman Of Affairs," features a similarly "scandalous" leading lady based on the real Lady Idina Sackville, a notorious aristocrat who married and divorced a few times too many for the respectability standards of those days. (Unlike the evil vamp in "A Fool There Was," c. 1916, Garbo's portrayal is sympathetic.) Lady Idina was the descendant of the Earl de la Warre, after whom Delaware was named. She also was queen of the wife-swapper set in Kenya during the 1920's. An excellent biography of Lady Idina is "The Bolter" by Frances Osborne, her great granddaughter. Thank you for this vlog!

    Do you think that having those gardners there, mowing the lawn and watering constantly, influences the activity in the park?
    It looks so fun to ride those mowers!

      Funny you say that! I told my husband if I ever win the lottery he will know because I will show up to his work on a ride on lawn mower because he's always wanted one.
