  • How to Tame Bright Light with ND Filters: Osmo Action ND Filters Tutorial
    The DJI Osmo Action has been out for almost two years, and is still a great action camera. When it was released, it featured a monitor on the back and front of the camera, much earlier than GoPro released their camera GoPro Hero 9 with a front facing monitor. While we eagerly await to see if DJI releases and Osmo Action 2, the Osmo Action still holds up well as one of the best action cameras in 2021.
    In this video, I'll give you a brief tutorial and tips for how to use ND Filters with the DJI Osmo Action.
    Like sunglasses for our own eyes, ND Filters can filter really bright light conditions.
    Since the Osmo Action has a fixed aperture (or lens opening), if you're trying to capture smooth, natural motion in your videos, you may need to filter excess light so you can slow down shutter speeds to go along with the right frame rate. Doing that will give you that smooth motion blur in your videos, and it's also known as shooting cinematic video.
    In this video, I'll give you a DJI Osmo Action ND Filters Tutorial. I'll highlight some basics of using ND Filters, and give you some examples on how to use them properly for capturing more natural looking video for your personal videos, vlogs, and action camera shots. While not all-encompassing, this will be your quick tutorial for how to use some of the best ND Filters for DJI Osmo Action.

    You forgot to mention the issues with stabilisation when using nd filters, but I guess that's why all the video samples with NDs are on a a tripod.

    Great info, thanks so much for getting me introduced to nd filters. I just got a Osmo action from amazon but it doesn’t display “RS” it displays “EIS”. Maybe my unit needs a firmware update?

    Nice video and simple but great explanation! With ND filter did you use in this video? Was it ND 32?
    Would you mind doing a similar video explaining UV and CPL filters?

      Congrats on your purchase Eduardo! I used an ND32 because there were no clouds in the sky when I filmed! As far as UV, they're really not needed for the Osmo Action but CPL are great because if you have lots of reflective light off of surfaces like water, glass, or even a beach, they can filter the angle of light that hits your camera's sensor so you can balance exposure. I might do that video because I have one for the Osmo Action!

    Chuck, thanks for the info. What are your thoughts on variable ND filters vs fixed NDs?

    • @TechTravelBeyond
      @TechTravelBeyond  3 года назад +2

      Hi! Variable NDs and their quality are...Variable! (g) You have to ensure the maker of the variable ND uses good glass, and their line doesn't have issues with a large dark X pattern appearing in the image. Some variable NDs have this issue at higher F-Stop equivalents, so read reviews on them before you buy. I have one for my A6000 I bought a few years back and it has that exact issue because it was from a less-expensive manufacturer.

    • @TechTravelBeyond
      @TechTravelBeyond  2 года назад

      You don’t need polarizing lenses unless you’re trying to also filter reflections from water, glass or bright concrete or sand. For most applications, ND would be your best and cost effective purchase. Think about how you film your projects first. Thanks for watching!

    I’ve heard and seen videos stating that ND filters can affect rock steady’s effectiveness but these were from almost 2 years ago. I was wondering if you’ve noticed anything like that?

    • @TechTravelBeyond
      @TechTravelBeyond  3 года назад +1

      Hi Kong! I don't generally film at high frame rates, usually 30fps, and I haven't tried this out on running or other activity where the background is generally moving fast. I haven't had the problem. I've also kept the firmware updated, so perhaps they've solved the problem. Just remember, high frame rates and resolution, even with ND filters, use more processing power along with any stabilization. This is also why at 4k, some resolutions cannot process with RockSteady.

      Awesome. Thanks for the reply. Will probably get me a set of nd filters soon. I typically only use my osmo action for vlogging and walking around lol. Keep up the good work.

    • @TechTravelBeyond
      @TechTravelBeyond  3 года назад

      @@Gawron.. The battery can be removed, but you would want to have it on to cover the Electronics inside. It has an all important seal. You can use external power via the USB-C port on the right side of the camera. Using that port won’t give dust exposure to the camera interior.

    Does this camera record vertically? The Gopro can do it.
    After what time does it turn off overheating?

    • @TechTravelBeyond
      @TechTravelBeyond  3 года назад +1

      Yes! Vertical video can be done and the camera controls on the touch screen will flip too. It’s been that way since it launched, about the same time GoPro 7 was released. As far as overheating, I haven’Thad that problem and I live in a hot climate. I don’t film for hours at a time, just small increments for vlogging, etc.

    • @Gawron..
      @Gawron.. 3 года назад

      @@TechTravelBeyond And have you been shooting video for more than 20 minutes at 4k / 60fps? Or longer with short breaks? Gopro 7 black turns off after this time, but 4k records only in the h265 codec, maybe that's why.

    • @TechTravelBeyond

      @@Gawron.. longest I’ve done was on a cruise leaving a port. About 10mins. I stopped GoPro after Hero7 black because of intermittent shutdowns. Haven’t gone back since. Check out David Manning here on RUclips. He did a video this week on why he went back to Osmo Action.
