The difficulty you had placing the wire connectors was because you were technically standing in the block you were trying to place them in. That's always annoying with non-full blocks. Also, a useful thing to make for climbing around, is Aluminum scaffolding. Same as steel scaffolding, but much, much cheaper. Also, if you need to show the recipe for something that's already in the world you can hit 3 on your Numpad to show it. It's part of NEI.

I normally throw in blocks of coal and iron when I make steal i get it back in blocks. I don't know if it's any faster. I just tend to do it that way.
It's just more resources done per cycle, no faster than individual coal coke and iron ingots.
