All Epics are available digitally, and can be collected when on sale for about $7-9. I buy printed and digital. Try reading digital Epics on a large screen HDTV, it is amazing that the art scales up well. Great video Mike!
Just been reading comics(graphic novels) for the first time in a long time, having read civil war and marvel 1602 over the last couple evenings, this video has come at a nice time for me to consider what will be next. Nice work as usual from the only book tuber I tend to watch! Keep it up mate!
Great value for money, I like Epics. My comic books are a higgledy-piggledy mash of various paperbacks, thin ones, chunkier ones, complete collections, various hardcovers and deluxe editions, for me Epics are good for filling gaps that have never been collected before or are long out of print and otherwise unavailable. Did you know the Modern Epic line starts this year with Spider-Gwen, joining the ongoing Epic Collection line we know an love.
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 Omar from youtube's Near Mint Condition has a theory the 'modern' epics will be from Heroes Return onwards, after the year when Image Comics took over the FF and a few other long running comics that were cancelled.
But do they do what the B&W Essentials collections used to do? Which was when a story crossed over with another comic (this isn't an actual example). Back in the days when crossovers didn't involve every currently running comic, and several one-shots & miniseries, A character, say Iron Man, might guest star in Spider-Man, and the story would be completed in Iron Man, with Spider-Man guest starring. The Essentials volumes would always include the Iron Man issue in the Spider-Man Essential volume, & the Spider-Man issue in the Iron Man Essential volume. This of course meant you'd have duplicate material if you bought both, but that was better than having to switch to another collection in the middle of a story.
One thing I will say since I recently started collecting I think two years ago that I like about the epic collections is that I agree it is very cool that you don't only get like for example Spider-Man but you get other issues of different heroes in there as well which is really cool and I'm glad they do that I hope it continues with future epics as well
Do any Epic Collections: Collect major crossover events like civil war, Secret Invasion, or either secret wars? Collect modern comic stories for characters (published in the last 20 years or so)?
Epic collections tend to collect issues up to 2000 or so. Marvel is now publishing Modern Epic collections that will collect issues from 2000 on. I imagine they will get to everything eventually.
I still buy Marvel's Essential volumes when I find them cheap as they do provide a lot of reading, and in some cases (depending on the artist) the art can look better in b/w. Also, colour is irrelevant to stories from the old Marvel b/w monster magazines like Monsters Unleashed and to stories from Savage Sword Of Conan. However, I am moving towards the Epic line (again when they're on sale because cost is about double cover price here in Australia). My one Omnibus is Kull The Barbarian and I love it. You're quite correct about DC's current reprint programme Michael - in fact, some would ask what reprint programme - but DC as a whole seems quite chaotic right now. Oh, I am very impressed by your shelf after shelf of Epic volumes and Omnibuses (should that be Omnibi? probably not).
Did you like Fantastic Four: Full Circle by Alex Ross that came out last year? I thought it was great! Trippy space adventure with blacklight colors - true to the roots of the FF.
You’re right, the Epics are a great way to collect issues. DC should take note (and watch your videos). I’m still partial to my collection of Essentials and think it’s nice to see the uncolored art and inks. Plus they were easier on my wallet. I do Epics on kindle since they’re usually cheaper that way. Great video.
The only Epic Collections I own thus far are the West Coast Avengers which I have 5 volumes. They have been releasing them in order but pretty long breaks between volumes. I get why Marvel went the random volume route to cross promote with some current storyline whether it be in comics, tv, or movie but that made me omnibus wait more than anything since I have so many of the Essentials. I felt kind of burned with the end of Essentials so that was another reason didn't turn to collecting Epics. The adult coloring book craze started around the time they ended the Essential line. I thought they kind of missed an opportunity there.
Very nice way to bide your time until Steve returns, and still keep Comic Book Wednesday going. I know you're holding back on Deathlok until Steve can join in.
I have none of the Epics or omnibi. I liked the Essentials and DCs Showcase. The epics are too expensive. I even found that with th BW reproduction one can appreciate the quality of the art better. I got a whole new appreciation for Wayne Boeing's Superman after seeing it in BW. Wish those volumes were more available at the lower prices. Better for reading.
Thrilling indeed!!! I hate how these go out of print (and reprints in general), by the time I got the first three savage sword dark horse collections, all the rest where out of print, and the second hand market is just ridiculous, I mean you could probably get the whole original run cheaper than the reprints! (And I’m pretty sure the same applies for the marvel omnibuses…)
How I'd love to lodge at your manor for a year and read all your comics, figure out if I actually enjoy the storytelling styles particular decades/writers/artists. I have a "Fantastic Four Extended Family" which is more of a smorgasbord of single issues through the decades, and I tried FF#1 which was laughable cheesy to me, but not enough to really enjoy. All the same, _maybe_ I'd get into it if I kept going chronologically - I just naturally prefer it that way with more context, rather then jumping around. I'll keep trying the samples anyway. Problem is I'm cheep and I never see these epic collections on discount and don't want to risk full price on something I might find too silly, and keeps the stories hanging. Mostly I just find post Ultimate era trade-paperbacks (which I like better from what I've sampled), and I'm trying to get enough story threads to carry through a few arcs, augmented with the public library, which mostly has only newer comics also, but so often with volumes missing.
What I don't understand is I know a lot of these are in high demand why doesn't marvel just keep most of these epics evergreen and print them often they would make a lot more money that way I feel like personally
Well, Marvel isn’t hurting for money. The comics side of their business is pretty tiny, but it is consistent. They know that by keeping the print runs limited they will sell everything they do print and keep demand high for Epic Collections in the future. There are no piles of Epics languishing in warehouses so it’s pure dependable profit. Tiny in the grand Marvel scheme of things but, because it is dependable, valuable.

I love epic collections. Not only do they pack a ton of comics into one book but they're also really comfortable to read. Wonderful format.
I wish DC was as diligent reprinting their stuff.
Me too.
im drooling over your epics, especially those Daredevils
what a Marvel-ous collection
im struggling on acquiring an affordable DD epic 2
Excellent Video. I love the Comics known as Man Called Nova Richard Rider. Also, Daredevil.

Wow, Michael, that's an epic collection! Heh heh.

It will be interesting to see when Marvel comics started to become “modern “.

Marvel Epic Collections! Drool… 🤤

I really liked Full Circle. I did a video about it.
I just found your channel your amazing ❤

Yeah, it’s frustrating. Fortunately all those Savage Sword books are due to be reprinted by Titan.

I have a high tolerance for classic comic book silliness.

Do you sleep at all?
Not enough.
In Australian dollar terms you are a millionaire several times over with all those epic collections. Could be time to retire down under 🤭🤭
