    When you hit a pothole, stop immediately if you have time, and take a picture of the hole, and note if you're on a highway or a municipal road. Highways are government jurisdiction, while secondary roads are of municipal jurisdiction. Go file a complaint and have your tires checked and repaired on the side you hit. Once that is done, bring them the bill, and make them pay the price you paid. If they don't want to process your request, bring them to court. The laws says that any roads in the country must be safe and adequately maintained, so a pothole is negligeance on the behalf of either the state or the municipally, so it itcumbs to them to pay for any damages your vehicle encounters by the said negligeance.

    Great video and Mario is a top guy. I was taught that you put a tyre or tire on the rim and line up the red spot on the sidewall with the valve, then balance it. This results in less weights on your wheel to balance it, irrespective of the tyre or tire and the wheel's imperfections.

    For price reference, I'm the the SF Bay Area. I recently got a set of 19" Audi S3 rims with good 35 series Continental DWS tires for a good price off craigslist. Now I know why the price was so good!! :O
    Anyway, it was such a good price it was worth having two of the rims straightened. I had a local shop straighten them, remount and balance the tire, and had them stripped and new hyper silver powder coat put on for $225 a wheel. I had two done, I might go back and do another one or two. It was still an okay deal with getting two repaired and refurbished, but not such a good deal including the other two. The rims now look fantastic, by the way.
    I wish there was an easy way to spot out of round wheels off the car in the back of somebody's pickup truck.

    Some of the information in this video makes no sense...
    4:27 "if you zero out the rim you can't counterbalance it against the tires natural or delivered imperfections". When tire shop is doing balancing, tire is already placed on the rim randomly. That's why we often have weights on it.
    5:15 "when they get thrown of the truck they hit the ground, compress and can be bent". Tires are designed to handle much greater forces then throwing it off from one metre height on it's own weight... Even during the mounting you do much more "bending" then it would ever get from throwing off.

    • @SpaceMissile
      @SpaceMissile 6 лет назад +4

      5:15 - he specifies without having a rim on it. The tire alone will deform a lot differently on its own than when it's mounted and pressurized.

    • @EtaCarinae230
      @EtaCarinae230 6 лет назад +6

      the tyres are not placed randomly..on the rubber there is a yellow or red dot (in the point of lower mass of the tyre) that must be placed near the valve to blance the weight of the valvle and the thicker part of the rim...or at least professional do that

    To add. on most new tires, there is usually a colored little dot on the on the sidewall. That it is a lighter or heavier spot of the tire, I don't remember which.
    What you are "suppose to do" is line that up with the valve location on the rim. That way, when you balance it, it doesn't need too much more weight added to be balanced.

    • @Halsafe

      Even thought the tire is marked, it's always good to have it forced matched on a road force machine. The Yellow and Red Marks are reference points for tire shops that don't have road-force machines, therefore they have no way to combat excessive road force without some help from the manufacturer. Those marks usually never line up to the best location for a good force match.
      Just a heads up.

    • @Sheehy223

      I work at a Tire shop, that's a bunch of bullshit. I saw a video that told me to do that, tried it on the next 3 cars I put new tires on, it made no difference whatsoever when I balanced them. They still asked for just as much weight as you would expect from them. Pointless waste of time.

    • @mtktm
      @mtktm 7 лет назад +1

      Anyways, what I like to do is throw the rim on the balancing machine, make note of how off it is and location, mount the tire, then balance it again. If it's off on a different area, then I un-mount and remount the tire with the heavy spot of the tire on the lighter spot of the rim. But not everybody has tire mounting equipment for personal use, like I do.

      No, not for most common aluminium alloys. This grade of metal 'work hardens' very easily and as shown in the vid needs an application of heat to anneal the aluminum, slightly softening and stress-relieving it so it's safe to bend back to correct service specs.

    I am from Russia and with our roads I always get my wheels bent, probably like once or even maybe multiple times in a month (depends on the season). But I found a guy who can repair bent wheels without even heating them believe it or not. He does it perfectly, I don't know how, may be by just applying right amount of pressure on the hydraulic press. He told me that he came up with it when he just tried to repair bent g-wagon wheels, he thought that he most likely to brake them but the wheels were just fine. But I think this technique only works with certain wheel manufacturers, I personally drive a volkswagen jetta with 18 inch alutec wheels on 45% tyres, the rim shaped as a five spoke star the reason why the bend a lot because there is a lot of room between the spokes. These rims are pretty soft, compared to others I can tell by the feeling, but not that soft to bend on every small pothole, so that's why they bend easily but unbend even easier :D. By the way the cost of bend repair by that guy is around 30 usd each wheel.

    I just got a dent repaired for my 2008 Subaru Impreza 16in wheel for
    $168.
    I need to find out if they put that much care into fixing the problem or did they just bang it out.

    After the rim is heated and bent back, is there any need to heat treat it? I've heard that metal has memory in the sense that it will want to return to that bent state (with a relatively small impact after the repair). I've heard that it is necessary to heat treat the metal (after bend repair) to "erase" this "memory"?

    That's why I have winter wheels with steel rims and high profile tires, police cruiser style. They're way more resistant to cracking and you can do cold repairs with a hammer. It takes a skilled guy a couple minutes to bend them back and it ususally costs around 10$ with balancing. I change them for pretty wheels when most of the roads got fixed in spring.

    That is really interesting about the UPS guys damaging the tires from just dropping them and that they don't make the rim perfectly true so they can balance the tire and rim. Thanks for sharing Larry, as always awesome vid Brother.
