    you can lay sod on old grass/weeds. you dont need to till. you can literally slap sod on top on your lawn just the way it is. only reason to till is if you want to flatten out any lumps in your yard. ive done several yards without tilling, or killing grass/weeds. people will tell you to till/kill grass just to make it seem harder than it is. you dont even need to roll it once its laid. water it 2 hrs every other day after laying sod, or about 1hr every day for the 1st 2 weeks. all you want to make sure of is the sod merges with the earth. the 1 thing i would ABSOLUTELY recommened is mowing new sod with a reel mower. i recommend cutting any grass with a reel mower. use a starter fertilizer after laying new sod also. believe it or not, scotts makes a very good starter fertilizer.

      Just kill and pull out the weeds before sodding. Use an herbicide 3 months before installing new sod.

    The mowing after a week is false, you want to wait about 3 weeks so you can give the roots a chance to grab in the soil so you don’t tear it up. Also first 2 mows should be done with a push mower and not a zero turn

    I’ve read you shouldn’t cut new sod as you could possibly tear up the sod before it roots. You shouldn’t be walking on new sod for the first 2wks anyway

    watched you video and loved it I learned a lot. Just wanted to ask you questions in regards to prepping the sub-soil here in Oklahoma. I am going to lay Fescue sod but am really concerned about the clay that is probably the majority of yard. I plan on tilling and removing about 4 inches of the soil but don't really know what to do next. I thought some sand would be a good sub-soil but just don't know. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jake

    • @victoriad2225
      @victoriad2225 3 года назад +4

      yes otherwise the weeds will grow through the sod

    • @quorthunsargeras7054
      @quorthunsargeras7054 Год назад

      Yes, depending on the size of your lawn and how many weeds you have, it might save you time to just kill off your entire lawn.
      If weeds aren't terrible, you can just go around pull weeds before installing. If too many weeds, apply an herbicide a few months before installing new sod.

      If you live somewhere that is pretty dry, like say, Nevada or southern California, then yeah, you'd need that irrigation system.

    Can I lay my sod down if there’s little spots of my old grass ?

    • @MrFixItDIY
      @MrFixItDIY  4 года назад +4

      Kill it and remove as much as you can. The decay of the old grass underneath will create too much heat for the new sod and will kill that too.

    Don't water in heat of the day????

    • @quorthunsargeras7054
      @quorthunsargeras7054 Год назад

      Yeah, always water early in the morning. If you water in the heat of the day, water will just evaporate before it will touch the roots. You'll waste money and water.
      Water between 6am - 8am. 9am at the latest.
      Don't water before nightfall, you'll significantly increase the risk for diseases and fungi.
