Big shoutout to Fredrik for the sick animations! he helped on the matrix switch LED code which i had been chatting about for the past couple of weeks over on patreon and it just so happened the animations worked for the screens too!! after i shot this he sent over a cool piece of code that has 8 animations you flick through with a knob, and i play that at the end of the video! if you want to make an animation/game or anything for this i do plan to do a compilation vid in a month or something of submissions, please get in contact over on my site lookmumnocomputer.com the actual gameboy mega machine is midi channel 1, the routing matrix will be midi channel 15 and the gameboy screens midi channel 16 so technically you could make a midi file to play a song and a mini and large screen! just some ideas who knows! HERE IS A LINK TO THE CODE FREDRIK MADE, it actually works with rather common 8x8 pixel screens you can get for arduinos, here it is www.dropbox.com/sh/rc9emw2ulgai9jl/AACz1mwR-Fcl5mxIRjwLEcKia?dl=0

Can you share Fredrik's animation code so we can use it as a template to make a different animation? Thx!
I think if the matrix flashed through 'L' M' 'N' 'C' it should be pretty intelligible....
Ps: You truly are the nutty professor. 😉
Joshua Bryant ofcourse. Let me double check with fredrik and I’ll pop it up on this comment
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER replying so I get a notification once that example code is posted.
Also, for anyone interested in making a game, it looks like maybe the Python project pygame (github.com/pygame/pygame/) could be useful as it supports MIDI
This Python control suite for the Novation Launchpad could potentially be adapted to the Gameboy MegaMachine: github.com/FMMT666/launchpad.py
And if so, here's a snake game for the Launchpad that makes use of it: gist.github.com/katacarbix/6d5d45639e149807f4c4fe1662a84bd6
I don't know if any of that is helpful, but I hope so! Cheers!
You need to make a 160 x 144 Gameboy grid so that you can play Gameboy games on it.
Don’t give him this idea. He’s gonna solder for 160x144 days straight....
Oh no, he hearted the comment. It’s too late !!!
Plz get gameboy to sponsor him for the gameboy wall lol
@@whatsaaappthesequel woops, yes that's what I meant lol
Iain Emslie in full hd HAHAAA
It means 2304 gameboys. Datz crazy!
You're the electronics equivalent of Wintergatan and his Marble Machine X hahaha, great to see it's coming along nicely
this calls for a marble machine x gameboy megamachine collab :D
MAKE IT HAPPEN D:
(It's actually quite relevant, there's nothing more analog than the MMX and it's literally MIDI programming, we need a LMNC song on there)
@@ChaosPootato I'm picturing Martin weakly trying to yell out the lyrics to groundhog day while the MMX is carrying the piece by doing insane arpeggios
Had the same thought just now. XD
Just realised Look Mum no Computer is on Spotify - I feel a new playlist coming on
oooh! bet you could play snake on that!
i was gonna say! someone needs to make snake for it!
or Pong!
03:48 _"To clarify what is actually going on here..."_
That is quite an expansive statement.
No one give this man a flux capacitor. God knows what he would do.
He'd turn it into a modular flux capacitor... The future and the past will sound great.
He'd be in a state of flux!
@@DaveMcGarry "wooly mammoth modular synth"
Make even more awesome music?
I think we all know what he'd do
"Give It a Go, You Never Know" is surely your motto for life.
"Don't be scared to try it!"
Hoping to see Pong on this in the future!
Brian Clark hahaha yeah:
Next season on extreme hoarders. Sam the furbby hoarder is back at it, hoarding gameboy's this time!
"Why are the top-ones not working? Aaah theyre not plugged in.."
Every musician ever.
Except for drummers.
But drummers always need to be 2hrs earlier at the gig for transport and installation! I can relate though...
This machine is gonna rock so hard in live performance! It’s going to be mesmerizing to watch this screen as you play !
“It’s like looking into the mouth of a massive robot shark” 😂
Chiptune - ascended god tier.
The music you're making with this machine is my favourite stuff of yours so far
holy heck he's only gone and done it
it would be so dope if the pixel matrix worked like a live 8x8 pixel EQ.
Great idea
Sam, your excitement is inspiring. Very well done.
I never thought a game boy would be used one day to represent a pixel lol
Your reaction to them working speaks volumes to me.
Nothing better than soaking endless time into building something and then it works right away!!
This is awesome, thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
The patience building this boggles the mind...!
One of my favourite channels on RUclips it's brilliant I love seeing what you do and the format that you do it in it's fantastic I am a heavy metal fan but I love listening to your music it's very very good looking forward to hearing some good jams with the Gameboy mega machine
This is so BAD ASS!!!
Love watching the process
Brilliant, love it Sam.
Amazing vid been following this series love it!
That's amazing Sam! Really like how you explain what your doing. Keep up the creative super powers.
I love these updates. Especially when you really get into the weeds of how you're doing it. Would love to see a more in depth look at how you're making those PCB's!
I had no idea this guy Co wrote glitter and gold with Barns Courtney and is good friends with him... Been a fan of his music since late 2017 and LOVE the new record he released
Looking Really Kewl!.....Nice one Sam, and Fredrik, and everyone involved!
I love the different voices. Especially the ones you make when the displays flicker 😂👍
That’s amazing! Congrats Sam!! 🙌
It's looking really great Look Mum!
this probably one of the most original synths out there
Insane! Amazing but also insane!
we need
spectrum analyzer on that!!!
Looking good , very inspiring project!
Fantastic! =D Looking forward to more progress on this!
I love it! Awesome work dude 😀
Well wicked.
Looking forward to the music video!! Keep it up Sam love every upload!
'Tis one of the beautifullest creations of human so far!
The Synthtendo Raveboy ✌️😎👍
I can’t wait for your music video!
What if it was a massive equalizer visualizer
3d printer is very interesting. Omg this Gameboy mega machine is so complex. You are a genius!
Juliane Wolf yeah I didn’t realize till I was around a friends and we printed on his 3d printer made me realize how good this one was
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER cool, I just started doing it and it's so cool!
It's great seeing how far you've come since the early videos, good job man.
Scrolling 5x5 pixel text would an immediate idea as most characters can be made in a 5x5 pixel grid with only 2-3 character not looking immediately legible but would become recognisable.
A multi-colour LED light wall could be a good idea in future and some really lo-fi footage animated onto it kept as patterns running at a rate to get 24, 25 or 30 fps where many a coder out there could potentially help with the animations.
Great entertaining work as always, mate.
ohhhhhhh baby! so excited for this!
This machine is pure genius! Totally wicked👌.
hey man i just wanted to tell you that i love watching your videos and love your work. watching how much fun you are having and just watching your creative geniusness in action inspired me to get back into music. i gave up music when i was really young but it was a huge part of my life you made me realize that i was missing that part of myself even as a 30 yr old adult so i just wanted you to know i appreciate that! keep making awesome music! Also i know you do a lot of soldering you should check out milwaukees cordless soldering iron i use it a lot at work its pretty rad! gets hot in 15 seconds and works like a charm. i know you do a lot of quick fixes on the road LOL
wow, amazing screens and LEDs
i need more blinky red LEDs and toggle switches in my setup :)
and yet all I see is the evil furbies quietly sleeping in the back
edit: I swear some of them open their eyes during the vid... they are alive, be careful there mate...
That's awesome!! Wish I could start doing some stuff like it :D
Cool project!
Absolutely genius! This will bring a new era of chip-tune!
You sir INSANE!! Insanely awesome!!
that last bit absolutley amazing
PUFFFFFF!!!!! BRUTAL!
Dope as hell!
This is totally crazy, I love that !
Could you tie midi velocity to the gameboy screen brightness?
Emplo Yeesonly yeah I suppose so! Don’t think I’m good enough at code mind yaha
Could the current controller code be open sourced on github or something? if someone (possibly me) get a moment over we might be able to look at making that happen
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER You can use a transistor on an analog output pin on an arduino to drive the display brightness, right? You just shift the midi volume value left one bit, and send it to an analog pin on the arduino. You need to follow the control change bits after bytes 1011xxxx (x=ch bits) which will be 0vvvvvvv (v=velocity bits). Take those velocity bits and use them, you can replace bit shifting with making the analog circuit amplify the difference. You should get the max min brightnesses you desire from the signal. I have everything to do this, I think you said patreon subscribers can look at code. I will do that, and try to share the code with you.
@@aerodigital im looking into the code on the screens for velocity yeah. each row basically has an arduino and the arduino receives midi in, then sends pin high or low on each of the 8 gameboys on that row from pin D2 to pin D9. each of the arduinos are listenning for different midi notes. but yeah velocity could be done with the frequency of the pulse. and yeah on the bus boards its basically arduino pin to a transistor which drives the backlight.
anyone can look at code, patreon or not!
You are good enough to do it!
Incredible and utterly bonkers!
Man that is sick!
It's amazing :)
Amazing
You could give me unlimited time and resources and I'd never be about to do what you did with those Gameboys.
If you solve this problem with mathematics, the answer is, that you will, because you always have a probability to do something new in a certain amount of time and with unlimited time you will do anything possible for you to do, somewhen.
Is this how mad scientist start? This guy is crazy cool!
So COOL!
FANTASTIC!!!
This is starting to look rather insane :D
Wow that's ingenious.
I didn't know mad scientists still existed! So brilliant! 👌
THIS IS SO COOL
Man u r a content creater u deserve 10 million subs man it will happen
i want to know how did you source this many game boys.
cant wait to see the 8x8 setup, though i'd reframe the whole thing anew and run smaller boards, because it's so huge.
My god, your ambition is inspiring!
"I don't know if I'm good enough to do that" -- okay, Sam..... #MindBlown
Good jobly Sam. This looks like quite a project to undertaker.
If Alan Turing and Yahoo Serious had a baby..
I had a really cool midi sequence idea... until it had already been done. Thanks Fredrik. Lol
I think the Gameboy screens are switching on and off a lot quicker than the LEDs on the MIDI matrix, the slower cool down of the LEDs is helping with persistence of vision. Can the GBs be programmed to ramp down a little slower to help maintain the overall pattern in the minds' eye?
Amazing project, well done for going full fat on the audio and visual.
Your a genius mate.
Beautiful
This project is truly beautiful. Can you make a synth with a dimmer switch? How it cuts the wave.
I am amazed. That logo is so fucking cool
It's starting to really come together, not long now and you'll be laid up with back problems from carting the thing around :P
Maaaaaad 🤘🤘🤘🤘
It'll be great if someone ports Tetris over to that.
Now I wanna see if it'd be possible to simulate a "gray" colour by rapidly flashing the screen.
Did you work with lego on a lego star wars Droid Orchester? I could have sworn I saw you in their video
NSL black yep! It took a lot of building! Was tough hiding it in the corner of the workshop
LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER I really admire your creativity, knowledge, passion and skill, stay awesome 😁
Holy crap that's cool!
Should be straightforward to write some software to crate animations/art for the Gameboy synth.
Respect!
What type of Gameboy were these originally? I don't remember them having a screen like that.
Go on lad
Great stuff you make, just found your channel. The animation isn't easy to see because the spacing is two times a gameboy and 3x times larger than the 'pixel' screen. Maybe you can put a magnifier glas on top of each screen (or whole gameboy) to enlarge the whole screen (or whole gameboy) , so you will get a larger pixel. Or better ... ;-) .... a transparent plate/panel with a grid of magnifiers that fits on the front of the whole machine ;-) Sounds crazy, right? ;-) :-D Also keep dust out (or make it removable). Transparent is nice because you are still able to see-through and still can see all of the (art-) work behind it. I think you can make the panel out of transparent acrylic, drill holes for the (cheapy) plastic magnifier glasses and glue them in with acrylic glue/cement. The acrylic panel can also lighting up when shining light thru the edges of the panel. Nuts, right? ;-) :-D Just some ideas ;-)
it will be visible from far back. for instance if the instrumewnt was on a stage. lots of people suggested some sort of lense or magnifying thing for the front, problem all the screens need to be visible and useable to be a functioning synth. this screen aspect of the machine is just a fancy after thought
Pitch Bend note for screen brightness? I see this thing playing Tetris songs while you play Tetris on the screens.
How do you instruct the Luzbot to print without a computer? Do you use a battery and switch to create ascii characters to make up the gcode?
Anyways another great video, Sam!
Faster than light click everytime a new video comes out from your channel
I already thought that this thing is going to get really sick. But now it seems like it's gotten out of hand a bit, in a good way.
big thumbs up for your project. how much have you spent on it?
your work is awesome! you are a tool, man!
