His father passed away when he was 12. His mother a year later. This is a tribute to them, mainly his dad. His dad told him the world has no borders (this word also means limits/boundaries in Dutch) and to travel.
This song is about an orphan traveling through Europe. He's singing out going to Germany, but feeling alone, going to Italy but it's still hurting, screaming for help etc...
On top of that he told/promised his parents that one day he'd be on the Eurovision stage. He's now fulfilling that promise and living without boundaries. Again like his father told him to.
At the very end in this song he therefore says "See dad, I listened to you".

As said before: Little bit of background on Joost. He was creative from a very young age and also a bit different. His father said that there are no boundaries and he should follow his dreams. They always watched the Eurovision Songfestival together so as a kid he replied that his dream would be to go to the Eurovision Songfestival. Then his dad passed away when he was 12 and his mother when he was 13. For inspiration and acceptance of the loss of his parents he travelled trough Europe. Therefore he sings that the pain and emptiness stayed with him no matter where he went. He paid for mental help but it did not work for him. Still he managed to be a very positive and joyful person as reflected in this song. He sings about the song Papaoutai from Stromae that is also about missing his father. In all of this he managed to combine lot's of cultural aspects of different European countries and the Netherlands. Without the layer of his personal life you will notice that a lot of elements can directly be related to the European countries. The young boy and the old man represent him and his father struggling trough life and his father being an example for him. The final emotional scene represents him as a kid and his father when it all ended, the burning of the family photo and the building represents that you need to move on in life and not get stuck in the past. In the end he tells that he listened to his father (there are no borders for your dreams) and refers to him going to the Eurovision Songfestival. So winning would be optional, his goal was participation.

    Thank you for your reaction.
This is a masterpiece!!! This is the winner of Eurovision Songcontest 2024, for me. No doubt.
Research: Europapa = Eurodad. 12 points for The Netherlands. An ode to his father who passed away when he was 12 years and his mother who passed away when he was 13 years. His father told him that there are no borders / boundaries, no limits. Go, travel and discover Europe and the world. He promised his father that one day he will be singing at the Eurovision. They used to watch it together when he was a child. Now he made it, because he will be on stage this year.
Everywhere he travelled he carried the pain and grief with him.
The fire simbolise letting go of the pain of no having his parents and the start of a new chapter in his life.

You got most of the references of the song right away, bravo, you got talent. It's not just good or bad, you know what you're talkinh about.
This song has so many layers though, he worked on it for over a year, maybe even his whole life...
Because he told his papa, I will play on eurosong too! Promise fulfilled!

Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was a teenager +/- 13 years old, and his mother died from a heart attack a year later.
""Those who laugh the brightest most always have the heaviest loads they carry around, where ever they travel that backpack of experiences is always there, they can't escape from that, be as free a spirit as you can be, respect your elders, don't waste your time, and an ode to his dad credo""borders are stupid"", and Ubuntu(*)""
This sums up Europapa (papa is Dutch for Daddy) for me, it is true Art and a masterpiece by Joost (Joast) Klein (kline).
(*) Ubuntu (Xhosa(a South African tribe language) for "we are all as one"") is the most prolific, important, eye-opening, life-changing word I have learned in my 58 years of being an earthling.
Ubuntu to you, fellow earthling :)
Btw Klein means small in Dutch.
    Joost Klein, dream big
