  • Welcome to My step-by-step guide on building the iconic Santa Maria ship model from Heller. This video will take you through the entire process, from the initial unboxing to the final display of the completed model.
In this video, we’ll start by exploring the Heller kit, which includes all the parts and instructions needed to build the Santa Maria. We’ll familiarize ourselves with these components, ensuring we understand each piece’s role in the construction.
The build begins with the assembly of the hull, the backbone of the ship. . Following the hull assembly, we’ll move onto the deck and masts, showing you how to secure these elements to create a sturdy and realistic model.
The final stages of the build involve painting and adding the sails. We’ll discuss the best techniques for these tasks, helping you achieve a lifelike finish that truly brings Santa Maria to life.
Whether you’re a seasoned model builder or a beginner, this video aims to provide a comprehensive guide to constructing the Santa Maria model. I hope you’ll join us on this exciting journey of creation and discovery. Enjoy the build!"

I am just coming back to modeling after 48 years! I have ordered a small wooden dory to get my eye in again. I will follow this with the Oseberg to practice planking, but watching & listening to your encouraging words I will follow that up with something much more complicated than I originally had in mind. Thank you.

Please don't worry about the length of your videos. Anyone watching them is doing so because they share your love of model making and I'm sure that they enjoy the long format of them. They are a wonderful resource so thank you so much for making them available particularly to those of us that are just starting out.
    Fair winds to you Alex.

I love this video build! Not only do you do amazing work, in all your videos I have seen over the past few years, but you stated something I have re-learned in the past 6 months. With my father-in-law living with us, with Alzheimer’s, I haven’t been able to build and I have rediscovered the passion, the joy, and the art of our hobby. When the day comes when I get my hobby room back, I will get to be that little kid again, and enjoy the passion of the detail I have at times overlooked trying to crank out models. Thank you for your videos and reminding me of this. Be well and keep up the beautiful work my friend!

Was waiting ages for your finishing of this model after watching the first two parts. i love how you explain away overscale parts when rigging, modelling should be about fun and the end result looks almost museum ready. your wood paintwork on the hole is exquisite even if it constantly changes colour due to filming. i bought this model after your first video piqued my curiosity and modified it for accuracy before i learnt there is no accurate model of the Sant Marie! I paused my build when the fine and fiddley rigging stole my smile. Big clumsy fingers and thumbs, tweezers and magnifying head set and thin bendy yards alongside zero experience did not help me. But your final video helped me see it in a new light. why oh why did i have to included the crew?
Your videos are great and some of the best narrated out there!

This was a wonderful build you did here Alex, beautiful even, but what really resonated with me with this video was where Alex talked about that sense of peace building models can bring. At this stage of my life, I feel I need that peace, which is why I have returned to building kits after a gap of 50 years. Will I be able to build as well as Alex did here? Very unlikely, but that focus where it's just you and the model, nothing else, is what I am really after. My kit building skill will progress as I make mistake after mistake. It's part of the journey, not to be feared but embraced!

Standing rigging was usually treated with tar which stiffened and preserved them. Running rigging on the other hand has to run through deadeyes and other items to lower and raide sails, drop anchors, raise ensigns etc.

Another very nice build. I hope to build a 'wooden' ship like this someday but it'll have to wait for after I'm retired (another 1.5 yrs) because it will take a lot more time than my typical models. I don't think I'd be as brave as you in using enamels, but you certainly make the most with them, at least more than I ever could. Looking forward to your next build.

Ahoj Alexi barevné provedení modelu je perfektní, co se týče takeláže plast a dřevo je společně těžko slučitelny ...třeba vyměnit plastové stěžně a ráhna za dřevěné by nebyl špatný nápad, zvedlo by to model o level víš a hlavně by se tolik neprohýbala pod napínáním. Lanoví dost ošemetná věc
složitost bych volil asi podle měřítka.. jinak parádní práce.

I really hope that one day you can try build on your own one of the most beautiful ships. It was
Not the real ship but who cares. Owe like the beautiful things first. This ship is Neptune, it is from the pirates movie, it is much nicer as the black pearl and boy just watch the beautifu balconies it has. You will love it. Plus there is no one on RUclips or in the internet who made this copy. I don’t know why.
