When he started crying and going for the veil, my heart was broken all over again. Probably the best performance of the final lair scene I have ever seen. I can only dream of seeing Hugh Panaro live as the Phantom
Fictionally Dysfunctional My very first Phantom and I had the pleasure of seeing him more than once. A truly masterful performance each time. Heartbreakingly beautiful. One of the best!
I am fascinated with 2:25-2:33 . The way he growls "wooorrrldd" to the series of disbelieving expressions he makes as Raoul sings "Christine, Christine, let me see her". I love this rare up-close look at an especially visceral, electric performance by this man who portrays the Phantom better than anyone has since Michael Crawford created this character. Hugh is my hero.I came back to add the way he looks so taken-aback starting at 4:03 as Christine sings "tears of hate", and tries to shoo away Raoul's singing, and then SLAMS his hands on the organ at 4:20...he's breaking my heart and scaring me to death in this scene. So perfect. Especially when you remember the elegant, romantic creature he was the first time he took Christine down to his lair, contrasted with this unhinged, desperate one the second time down.
I'm replying to myself to add that this is THE most powerful, heart-wrenching final lair I have ever watched Hugh Panaro do. That last anguished cry, and "I love you" and "it's over now" is going to haunt me forever. And that heart-breakingly beautiful voice. All this phenomenal acting paired with an impossibly beautiful voice....I can't take it.
Yes! "You... *try* my patience..." has always really gotten me, along with Lisa's "Farewell my fallen idol and false friend!" and Hugh's almost rejection of the very idea of it.
@@keelieak I want to say that Lisa vroman elevated every phantom she’s across. I’ve seen Hugh many times with diff Christine’s and Lisa by FAR made all her counterparts better.
@@BlushGush I was lucky to see Vroman many times while she was the resident Christine in San Francisco, and she is my favorite. Her acting is superb. So is her singing. I'm also impressed with Panaro as the Phantom.
Okay what a couple of genius actors!! Lisa's vocal screams and crying outs, like it added so much more to the character then her silently standing and sobbing. And Hugh! Finally a phantom i've seen that strays from the normal by the script actors (who are also amazing too) but goes as far to continue his passionate pleas of "I love you"s as Christine runs away crying. It is heartbreaking! And perfect, and this moved into my top favorites just because of that! I was a bit eh on his higher pitched voice but it grew on me because his actor was amazing!
It always gets me when he says "I love you, I love you," because to me just something about it just adds more emotion to the character and to show that he's human and I just always cry
I genuinely believe that this is the best Hugh Panaro has ever done, mainly because Lisa gives him so much to work with! They have such wonderful chemistry!
@@israfelscarletraven6984 Hello again my fellow POTO fan! So sorry I'm only getting back to you now. Leave it to YT to not give me a notification. I agree wholeheartedly! Hugh and Lisa being such great friends and understanding one another as actors make them such a great team to watch in action. :)
These two are so amazing together!!! (I was impressed with Lisa’s throw of the bouquet.) This is classic Hugh, and a lovely Christine. They both provide real emotions, and are in sync. They’re both so in-touch with their characters.
Ah he does the extra "I love you!" During their singing like how Michael Crawford did, I havent seen that so far in any other phantom. Definitely the best version of this song since Michael. Wish I would have gotten the chance to see him
I've had the pleasure to meet Lisa Vroman in person a few times. What a delightful lady! So down to earth. Had the opportunity to meet John Cudia last year too. Super talented.
9:54 why did he have to do that, I legit cried 😭 I read one of the comments saying he got 80% more emotional at this performance because his father passed but THIS IS STILL ILLEGAL WTF ITS AMAZING BUT ILLEGAL I LITERALLY NEVER CRIED DURING THE FINAL LAIR BEFORE WHY DID HE HAVE TO DO IT 😭
Woah what happened to Hugh Panaro? I have seen some of his final lair scenes here on RUclips and they were all very much the same but this one was completely different, so visceral and emotional, I wonder why he changed so much with this one. What an amazing Performance.
I feel like this Christine was a bit more emotional than the other Christine's that have done this scene with him. One of the videos I've seen of him with another Christine, she barely seemed phased by anything happening.
i feel like it may have been because his father had died somewhere around that time, and i remember watching one of his interviews where he talked about it and said he was more aggressive and really felt the phantom’s feelings.
Hugh is for sure becoming my favorite Phantom after Michael Crawford. I think it might be because the voices are similar and both acted the fuck out of the role, as is evident here. Too bad he isn;t doing it anymore, I would love to see him live.
Lisa's one of the best "Christine Scream Queens"!!!! The "Christine Scream Queen" is an acting choice when a Christine lets out a horrific "scared shit for her life" scream during BOTH unmaskings and when "The Phantom" places the rope on Raoul's neck.
I worked as a handler for Lisa Vroman at an event during the San Francisco run. I hadn't seen her perform yet and got to know a cool chick with a buzz cut and an awesomely inventive potty mouth. To see her transform into one of the best Christines I've ever seen was magical. To this day ot amazes me how actors can become people that are pretty much the complete opposite of who they really are.
@@cathypeyton4142 I worked as her handler for events during the SF run. Very true! I don't normally like calling women "chicks" but she is a Cool Chick! Super friendly and confident. In many ways the opposite of Christine, which is probably why she was able to do her work and play her so well!

Another impressive performance, and interesting to see him do another take on the scene compared to other ones I've seen. Do wish that Christine would keep more quiet between her lines, though.

Lisa Vroman was the best Christine of them all. Knew how the role is to be played
My thoughts exactly. He seemed a bit more "suave" when trying to persuade Christine in the others while in this one, he's simply at his wits' end.
i feel like it may have been because his father had died somewhere around that time, and i remember watching one of his interviews where he talked about it and said he was more aggressive and really felt the phantom’s feelings.

John Cudia went on to become an incredible Phantom (my 2nd favourite) and I was lucky to see him twice
Considering the Raoul would later go on to play the Phantom, I've always wondered if they use principle Raoul's as last resort "Phantom" understudies?
They often do and have done this over the decades.

Yup
I think he got inspiration from Kevin Grey. Both of them inherited some characters from Lon Chaney.
Lon Chaney did his own makeup for the phantom and Hugh Panaro in a backstage look also helps to put on his makeup for the phantom.
My dream cast!!!!!
Such beautiful music for kisses.
"His life is now the ✨pri~ice✨ that you must earn!"

Not a fan of whomever did the makeup here, but overall pretty damn great. I love Lisa Vroman too.
