Hey Dan another cold hardy banana plant to look up is musa namwah, also called pisang awak. Last winter survived -2° /-3° C it burned the leaves but the stem remained green and new leaves appeared in late March

What a fabulous selection of tropical veg and fruit, love how your trying so many different types. This year ive got a chance to grow some veg in my friends allotment polytunnel. Ive planted Okra, yardlong bean, hyacinth bean, aubergine, musk melon and bottle gourd, chillis and ginger. Hoping to germinate some watermelon seeds too 🍉
Some nice plants there. Its fun. I grew bottle gourds a few years ago. They will grow like crazy in the polytunnel. Be ready with a brush to pollinate them. Rewarding they are when they produce fruit.

Hi Dan, To use vertical space had you thought of using gutters, filled with compost/earth and suspended. Strawberries , peas, french beans. Just keep an eye on the watering as there is not much medium to retain moisture. Love the variety & ambition of your planting.
Hi Jake. Yes, I have tried this in the past, it could work with good growing mediums etc. Great idea growing on different levels.
Hi Dan I only have room for vertical growing and I have 2 pallets on the fence and one self watering tower. I am growing loads of herbs and strawberries, dwarf peas, spinach, ball rooted carrots and garlic and I have squeezed some sweet corn in the flower borders 😀

Brilliant update, Dan, thanks so much. Everything looks in great condition, those strawberries look perfect.. Glad to see the return of the banana, thanks for that - and a peek at the new one! You have done terrific work there, as well as your main job and the allotment. Kudos to you. You must feel that it is all coming together now.
Something interesting I came across today, while listening to one of the German channels, one in which the gardener visits a professional organic gardener. He referred to the early flower on a chilli as a 'King Fruit/ Flower'. I am familiar with this in relation to apples and pears, but never think of the same in relation to chillies and tomatoes. This gentleman recommended removing those flowers on the chillies/ tomatoes - you know, the early one that appears on the mid stem as it reaches around 12" tall. I will take a photo of one as soon as it appears, but I had never heard of that for chjllies, had you? I always remove king fruit asap on apples/ pears, but wait to thin further. Jim McColl (Scotland) said how in industry they would cordon peppers. There is always something new to learn, but that surprised me today.
Good news, my vines (which were all but head last year) are showing promise. Fingers crossed.

Could be something to look into. One day I will get more detailed in my gardening. Not possible really at the moment but in time maybe. Great to hear about the vines. I forgot, what varieties?
@@homegardens7682 I have a Boskop that is thriving, bought from Kings. That produced grapes last year and is just starting to open some buds now, that one is excellent. The two that I bought from a different supplier, came covered in a wax covering. I noticed beads of silicone like spheres covering both of them. I photographed them to email the supplier, but the files were too large. The vines produced no leaves/ growth last year whatsoever. I thought that I had 2 dead sticks in the ground. After a wet Autumn and weird Winter, abnormally dry Spring for us here, they have both put out a bud or two. I think the moral of the story is, not to give up on the vines, even if they appear all but dead for over a year. it could be that they will progress this year, they may stall again. the varieties were/ are Rhea and Vanessa. Boskop is planted in the worst position, more northerly, less sun, yet it prospers.

Finally got my polytunnel going to try half veggie and half fruit with peach nectarines grapes
I'm in southern ireland so weather can be very warm

I am not sure why but I HAD to grow cotton for myself! It is turning out fine except that I got aphids ->sooty mold. It’s Barbados cotton in a pot. And Buddha Belly Sugar cane, don’t ask why. And calamondin orange from a plant I got in a swap. Husband makes excellent marmalade! Plus a few other citrus…thank you for the video.

@@homegardens7682 Hey Dan, it won't let me copy a link but I purchased it off ebay from value4less store. I had a horrible time finding anyone who could ship to California. I was in North Dakota but moved back to Northern California after my divorce. My polytunnel is 7' x 7' x 15' I'm pretty sure the store has larger ones. The issue they claim is cancer causing materials 🙄 I can go buy fentanyl laced drugs on any corner but beware of the polytunnels 🤔😆🤣 If folks have an issue getting one shipped to their area they can Google polytunnels shipped to their state and click shopping at the top of the page 🤓 Hope this helps our fellow gardeners 🌱
@@GypsyoftheSun Thanks Tricia. I had a chap a while ago say he couldn't get a suitable tunnel in the US. He said they were not the best quality and he couldn't get one sent to the US from the UK. Its nice to know you have managed to source one.

Gisella something 🤔🤗 Aparently it's a semi small one. I have a small garden but it's south facing on an ancient cottage with quite a good plot so it's about being creative with it and training them into the right spaces I think. I am lucky there an old established Apple tree but it's cooking apples, still not complaining as she's an old beaut.
I am debating purchasing an almond tree. But maybe I will play it safe and go with a plum 🤷♀️ decisions decisions.

OK so now I really am spoilt for choice.
My mother bought a house with a massive forty year old food forest a couple of years ago (not that she appreciates it or knows what to do with it lol) but she has invited me over to visit next weekend and has said I can take cuttings or try air layering from whatever I fancy. Exciting and interesting as I have no idea where to start. Better watch some more videos 🤗

Wow Dan! Your polytunnel looks like heaven. Well done. And I wish you the best of luck with all the stuff you're growing especially the banana tree. I just wanted to ask where did you buy the super bindi from? I would like to try growing that. At the moment I'm growing bangladeshi kadoo (type of courgette) and bangladeshi cucumber which are quite small in size. They're doing well on my windowsill.

Amazing! Your videos give me the confidence to be a gardener. I appreciate it! My aubergines finally sprouted! Not sure what took them so long. Hopefully they will come on now that it's warming up. One problem I am having is ants. I've got masses of them in my polytunnel. They've made a nest in one of my cucumber pots. Have you had this problem? Any guidance on what to do?
Aha. You can do it! Aubergines can take a while, they like heat, watering with tepid water could help. I will look into the ants issue. I have a few ants in the tunnel but they don't seem to be causing as issue.
I just had a look. Apparently ants don't like citrus so maybe putting some citrus peel around the area could help?

diluted white vinegar water into the blueberry plants while potting with regular compost seemed to do the trick with the three we have going at the moment

@@homegardens7682 I've not tested the soil but the results seems tobe good. I think it was just a few spoons in the water can. Two years on and I've not had to add anymore.

Well it's going to be a chock full and productive tunnel there.
With blue berries you need to make sure that you get the same type to cross pollinate. I've ended up with a rabbit eye and a Highberrry and they don't cross pollinate
These are Highbush blueberries if I am correct.

Great idea to place the pots of melons on top of the compost bag - they should love the heat generated beneath them. Apparently in warmer climates melons often self seed on compost piles.
I had to google exploding cucumbers - weird things!
Has your tayberry got any flowers yet? Mine has leaves, but no flowers yet.
I hope the melons do well. The compost is not one metre squared so it will only generate an certain amount of heat but it should help. Yes! It has a few, they are not open yet but there are plenty. Hopefully yours will come soon.
What happened to the 2 Date plants ?

What kind of temperatures are you getting inside there? My thermometer in my poly tunnel (similar to yours) in direct sun can get to 40c with the door open. Some of my plants are looking a a bit stressed due to it
I leave it open sometimes on hot days, good for ventilation etc. I think I will make a video on this subject.

What type of compost do you use for your containers?
A lot of it was multipurpose compost I had left over, some had some garden soil mixed into it from before. I also bought a 1400 litre bag from Beaver Compost which is so far, so good.

Perfect Plants ring a bell for the Cavendish, I will look it up then get back to you.
Yes, the Dwarf Cavendish was from Perfect Plants on Amazon, I checked, currently unavailable from them. The Musa Dajiao was from the Hot Plant Co on Amazon, also currently unavailable. Have a good look around and hopefully you can find something.

I would go for a 30 litre one.
