God, that whole part about body horror and parasitism, and realising you don’t control all your bits, and that your bits hold no value to things that aren’t human, was PHENOMENAL. I love listening to people who understand exactly why they love the things they love and while I’m generally too much of a wuss to be a horror nut I’ve never heard someone cut to the core of those things’ appeal as a storytelling device so cleanly.
Jhonen fucking is my teenage years. His influence can not be under stated. Sadly, I am a morose adult who has to read Johnny every other year cuz I seriously see what humanity is and dream about listening to ode to joy in a shopping mall…
I am always so excited when Jhonen makes a surprise appearance to do an interview or project. I love hearing his thoughts, perspective, and about his experiences. Jhonen is always so interesting and inspiring in such a unique way. I really hope he finds a niche where he can create happily and independently from the vampiric entertainment machine, because honestly I hope that for my self. Keep being you, Jhonen!
Of all of the people living on planet Earth I think Jhonen Vasquez is by far my most favorite person ever. Edit: It brings me such genuine joy to see Jhonen still drawing Johnny. Shows that even after so many years he still loves and cares for his creations.
Why has no one mentioned Invader Zim at all? Invader Zim is the best show on Nick ever, no questions asked. It has inspired me a lot and I cant wait to see more of Zim.
Because that's all anyone ever asks him about and I'm sure that got old 20+ years ago :p I'm a huge ZIM fan but sometimes *not* knowing the answers just makes it even better.
This was really helpful. As an artist I really appreciated listening to this, I’ve always looked up to Jhonen and wondered what it was like for him and his career.
Thank you for taking the time to interview with my favorite cartoonist Jhonen Vasquez I'm smiling already and laughing my energy is bouncing around with excitement 😀😂😈👽🤖
I just want to see more stuff from this man's mind. jthm i feel sick and squee is such an amazing blend of dark comedy, and eldritch horror. and invader zim was of course my childhood introduction to this man when it still played on nick. then it lead me down to rewatching his music Video shut me up for the band mindless self indulgence. but I enjoy everything jhonen produces.
“houses in arizona are like 10 dollars” god i wish that was the truth 😞 people from california are moving here and it’s impossible to buy a house these days
Picked up the JTHM directors cut the other day and just finished it. As someone familiar with non comic work its cool to see how he’s (I assume) matured as a person yet stayed mostly the same.
I never understood why I had friends back in the 90's/00's that idolized and wanted to be like NNY. And I would faceplant and be like "Dude, that's not the point!"
Sucks that he squandered his potential as a writer/artist by letting his unhinged fans get to him when he was doing JTHM. He went to some very interesting territories in those comics but his readers really turned him off from continuing it with their constant idolization of serial killer Johnny and demanding more gore, sending him weird fan-mail, and so on. His writing was never the same after JTHM, besides ‘I Feel Sick’, which had the last droplets of that type of deep creative storytelling style. I personally think he had the potential to be as great as Tim Burton or Neil Gaiman. Sadly, that’s not how it turned out to be.
Yeah, but I think there is a lot that has happened on the other end that is perfect for Johnen and has rewarded him greatly for it. I get what you mean but I think Johnen has done so much that it really shouldn't matter what happened in the past as his later efforts gained a different kind of love to him
This is so amazing. This is my first time hearing Jhonen Vazquez’s voice and he just sounds really friendly and he acts really friendly too :) The art is so cool too
Oh my god. I love his approach to art, that makes so much sense to me...especially since I have ADHD and start 10 million projects yet finish none. The passion burns up SO quickly and like he said, it's fun until it's not. I like how he doesn't try to take things too seriously and literally just waits for ideas to pop into his head like some sort of psychic receiving precognitions. God I wish that were me. Overthinking and lack of motivation have killed my creativity. 1:17:20 actually gave me some hope...
Why are a a majority of these comments so unhinged lmao. Jhonen Vasquez is such a real one and amazing artist tho, I'd love to be as chill as him whenever I'm his age. Thanks for making a lot of people's childhoods and inspiring younger artists like me to pursue being an artist. ❤️
This is amazing. Just saw dis link on one of his tweets and i had to watch it. Jhonen, if ur reading this, JtHM and IZ and Squee and all those others are awesome! You did great!
No ghosts, no aliens, and definitely no toon town lollol Roger Rabbit was a huge inspiration from my childhood that left me disappointed.. to an extent. Because now I can draw lol. This was super rad to watch and listen to!!! Thank you for this video x3
i was thinking about undone just before yall mentioned it! the synchronicity made me so happy. what a beautiful show...glad to see people loving it as well. this was super inspiring creatively, been having writers block and this cleared some of it up.
(Sorry for the late reply, you probably figured this out by now) Probably pen tablets/pen displays. They're quite common for people who makes digital art. 'Wacom' is the most common brand for those

I love you man you mean the world to me the Invader Zim Movie I’ve seen 10 times and I’m watching again tonight in my opinion it’s the best movie ever created
Yeah, he likes to try and push it away as sophomoric violence and immature ramblings of a pretentious imbecile, but its obviously written from a place of trying to express oneself. He used to relate more to Nny and its obvious from the naming similarities, the fact that they both are Mexican-American etc. that Nny is a sort of sub-in character in place of the author. I figure since Jhonen's older now he just wants to distance himself from that art because its made from a dark place. Look at his newer works and his new art style - its like steven universe /gravity falls ish. Nothing outright wrong with it, he's obviously happier and healthier, but its lame that he just rights off his old work like that. Zim is included tbh.
@@PKSkyler damn wow, i couldn't have said that any better myself the JTHM comic didn't read like entirely juvenile humor, there were some real and serious points sprinkled in. while it can all be passed off as comedy, there's some pandering and it's obvious. jhonen casually saying "people are responsible for almost every terrible thing i know of" in an interview, just proves this
it kinda sucks how on his twitter account he complains about losing followers then wants to be all like: "i don't like you if you don't agree with me!!!!" like chill out dude. if you don't wanna lose followers and all, then don't post anything that's related to politics. it's as simple as that. not everyone on the internet is gonna agree with you. that's just how life works...
i dont believe he's a people person, social media isnt not his thing. it may be required for him to stay relevant and stay in touch with his fans. he's always been known to be a jerk and avoid going to comic con panels. i don't think he's complaining as much as he's observing. regardless, you can be sure he doesn't like you lol
