The way Jason described the Christopher Owens album is so on the money. I really liked it initially but I kept wanting to return to it because of all the albums this year it made me feel the most. Whether you know his story or not, there is so much heart in that record. You feel so much connection to him as an artist. There are so many musical layers where I hear something new that catches my ear every time I listen but also so many emotional layers. I think you both spoke so well and passionately about all your picks. Part of what makes this video one if the yearly TLM events.

Love watching Bes of the Year ...videos. Discovering so many bands I didn't know about. I watched Jason from the beginning when he was doing solo this podcast and remember those "mammoth" long Best of the Year ...episodes and impressed me with his reviews and constant search for good melody in music. Happy New Year to both of you guys (and to the 3rd one who went into the life oblivion)...

The lack of Vampire Weekend in either of your top 25 lists was completely forgiven when I listened to Jason's number one pick right after finishing your video -- excellent! An easy 4.5 stars with 5 stars well within its reach after future listens (favorite track after one listen: "I Think Of Heaven"). Apparently, I already know Christopher Owens -- a look back in my "archives" shows that his "Here We Go" was my #17 song of 2013 which I'd totally forgotten about (it is a very pretty song). Thanks again guys for a "5 star" channel!
When i saw The Joy Hotel made Jason's list, I cheered so loud that my cat ran out of the room. The vast majority of these artists are unknown to me but i've been checking some of them out and finding some gems. The Smile and Nolan Potter are among my favorites, but The Joy Hotel reigns #1 for me. Great content!
Jason, I'm sure someone's said it here already but I'm glad you enjoyed the Christoper Owen's album as much as you did. I've yet to give it a listen, but I spent this year getting to know Girl's debut album. I really wanted my friends to know how special that album was. I really need to check out their EP and follow up. You saying you enjoyed Owen's latest as much as the debut has me anxious to hear it. I really wish I could digest new music as easily as you guys!
No idea how you guys make it through so many albums in one year. Working a 9 to 6 job, plus commuting to work on the weekends, I thought I could squeeze in more time for listening but I just don't have the focus to do so! Would be great if you do a video detailing how you make it through over 100 albums in a few months 😅

Bengals still with a shot & catch a break playing Denver at home this week .. but will need the KC backups to beat them in week 17 while they win in Pittsburgh. Nice to have a shot though 👌
Happy Christmas from Ireland. I only listened to about 50 albums this year. 2024 is one of the better years of the 20s for me and has a good mix of new bands and great comebacks. Always an education watching your videos - long may they continue. Here's my favourite albums from this year in no particular order. Actually it is just the new music that I listened in full to several times. No where near the 200 / 400 albums you guys listened to. Pet Shop Boys - Nonetheless - best album in ages? Lemon Twigs - A Dream Is All We Know - maintaining a high standard The Felice Brothers - Valley Of Abandoned Songs - somewhat overlooked band Coldplay - Moon Music - guilty pleasure! Field Music - Limits of Language - interesting as always - should have a higher profile Joan Armatrading - How Did This Happen and What Does It Mean - absolute quality as usual

Merce is from my neighborhood. I see her around sometimes. I comb through the new releases on AOTY every Friday and the folks on our discord will fill in any gaps. Also, the more you dig around for new music, the more it will find you. My social media feeds are like 97% music related at this point. Like and follow all the sites talking about the stuff you’re into. Happy New Year! -Jason
I hadn’t listened to Christopher Owen’s and really enjoying it. Would have made my top 25 if I had listened to it. I love finding new albums through the channel

I’m right there with you Jason on Adrianne Lenker being the best songwriter of the 21st century. She’s astonishing. Had a feeling the Jessica Pratt would be up there for you, too. I had a similar experience with it - at first was like this is good but too one-note and sedated to be great. But after a couple more listens her songwriting, quirky voice, and the beautifully spacious arrangements with just enough surprises won me over. And Geordie Greep. That shit is bonkers. Outside of those 3, I got a lot of catching up to do for 2024! Thanks as always for recs.

@@TastesLikeMusic i would be very interested in your opinion on the twisted pine release. i'm more of a live music fan, went to about 100 shows this year. saw them 7 times in '24.
I see that trend of songwriting + great playing. Technicality is getting less hate these days. I even saw Adrianne L wearing a dream theater shirt. As always, there’s plenty to dig into on your lists. My list will be coming shortly. Great to see some deep-cut commonalities like The Medium.
I'm impressed. I can't imagine finding the time to listen to hundreds of new albums. I've not got a life and can still only just rustle up a top 10 of favourites 😊 1. Bad Nerves - Still Nervous 2. Yes Joe my man with imaginal disk and Brat in the top two spots! I love that both you and Mike the snare had the same top two, it just validates my opinion even more😉 (and no I will not make a list of my favourite albums of the previous year because these two albums are all I need!) that opinion being that there aren’t any better records out of 2024 nor more important records and no one can convince me otherwise! Like I have been waiting for some records like these for a long time you know one’s that are big but also records I also love because they are actually awesome, and have an impact on pop culture, that kind of stuff. Or imaginal disk with its cinematic quality and it’s pretty rich ass synth instrumentals that just kinda fuck me up(but in a good way). It makes me feel something other than “this song is catchy” in more intelligible terms. That being said there’s also a lot of other good music to check out from 2024.
A top 10 from me and not too difficult as I loved all these albums. Not really one for ordering them but here goes. 1. Fontaines D.C. 'Romance' 2. Amyl & the Sniffers 'Cartoon Darkness's 3. Nick Cave 'Wild God' 4. MGMT 'Loss of Life' 5. Fat Dog 'Woof' 6. Zeal and Ardor 'Grief' 7. Nathaniel Rateliffe and the Night Sweats 'South of Here' 8. The Smile 'Cutouts' 9. While I personally didn't care for a lot of the albums in questions, it's crazy that Deep Purple, Black Crowes, Jerry Cantrell, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Slash, Eels, The Jesus Lizard (I do like this one), Buffalo Tom, Smashing Pumpkins, Sheryl Crow, and Collective Soul all released albums in 2024. It's possible to make a 2024 year-end list containing new material by alt-rock outfits who peaked 30+ years ago. Primal Scream, the Dandy Warhols, Shed Seven, Better Than Ezra, Eve 6, and Soul Asylum also put out albums this year.
1. La Luz - News of the Universe 2. Mac Cornish - Never Made Much of a Lover 3. Jack White - No Name 4. Hurray for the Riff Raff - The Past is Still Alive 5. Wussy - Cincinnati Ohio 6. The Black Crowes - Happiness Bastards 7. Adrianne Lenker - Bright Future 8. Phosphorescent - Revelator 9. Johnny Blue Skies - Passage Du Desir 10. Sierra Ferrell - Trail of Flowers 11. The Bevis Frond - Focus On Nature 12. The Heavy Heavy - One of a Kind 13. somesurprises - Perseids 14. Kiely Connell - My Own Company 15. The Hanging Stars - On A Golden Shore 16. Waxahatchee - Tigers Blood 17. Brown Horse - Reservoir 18. Pearl Jam - Dark Matter 19. Trummors - 5 20. Jake Xerxes Fussell - When I'm Called
Great calls on the Nolan Potter, Slift and Rosalie Cunningham. I liked the Christopher Owens, but there's something magical about a full band at peak powers that solo artists just can't compete with, at least for me. Obviously in the mainstream there's a tyranny of singer-songwriters. Cunningham is technically solo, but with her partner Rosco Wilson, it sounds like a band. By all accounts they bring the heavy and shredding live. Hope they make it to North America -- it's been since 2016 that I saw her with Purson. One underrated gem that's a must-hear: The Sea Kings - Fear is all Around (Iffy Folk) The fact that a serious contender for album of the year isn’t on any other year-end list that I know of could drive be crazy if I let it. But I’m used to the fact that some of the very best bands and artists are truly independent, with no major label budget to promote them or support touring in other countries. It’s sitting there easily available on most streaming services and Bandcamp. You can even order a vinyl copy. While you’re at it, check out their lost classic debut Woke In The Devil’s Arms (Iffy Folk, 2014). This Glasgow band’s darkly literate, indie pop/art rock is essential listening for fans of any of the artists below and more. Indie Pop | Art Rock | Psych Noir. Always interesting to hear your picks for the best of the year. I thought this was a strong year for great music. However, as usual, we swim in very different musical streams. I listened to over 150 new albums this year, after making an effort to listen to more new music. But only a handful of the albums on your lists are ones I listened to, and most of those (Jack White, Opeth, The Cure, Last Dinner Party) did not make my top 50. But there were several here I do want to check out. Only 1 of my top 25 was mentioned in either list (Rosalie Cunningham), and I would bet that even with all of the hundreds of albums you guys listened to, there are probably very few from my list that you did listen to. There is just a lot of music out there and we all have our own styles we prefer and our own likes and dislikes. Anyway, here is my top 25 list for 2024: 25. Azure - Fym 24. Airbag - The Century of the Self 23. CEN-Projekt - The Story of Enja 22. The Decmeberists - As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again 21. Emerald City Council - Motion Carries 20. Ritual - The Story of Mr. Bogd Part 1 19. Joe Deninzon and Stratospheerius - Imposter! 18. Mile Marker Zero - Coming of Age 17. Kite Parade -Disparity 16. Steve Hackett - The Circus and the Nightwhale 15. Neil Morse and The Resonance - No Hill For a Climber 14. Beardfish - Songs For Beating Hearts 13. The Pineapple Thief - It Leads to This 12. Oddleaf - Where Ideal and Denial Collide 11. Versa - A Voyage A Destination Part 2 10. Bend Sinister - Mostly Great Things 9. Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks - True 8. Rosalie Cunningham - To Shoot Another Day 7. IZZ - Collapse the Wave 6. Guster - Ooh La La 5. Albion - Lakesongs of the Elbid 4. Circe Link and Christian Nesmith - Arcana 3. Cloud Cult - Alchemy Creek 2. Big Big Train - The Likes of Us 1. Barock Project - Time Voyager (Superb Symphonic Prog - Very best album I heard all year, perfect score - 10/10)
Thanks for responding. I understand your aversion to most Prog, and that’s fine, but what I don’t understand is why, given the kinds of music you do prefer, great bands like Guster (indie pop-rock) and Cloud Cult (eclectic Folk) weren’t even on your radar. I highly recommend checking out those albums, especially cloud cult, as I would have thought it would be right up your alley. I’m currently in the process of checking out most of the albums in yours and joes top picks, will let you know how that goes. Thanks for the great suggestions.
Guess I need to check out Mk. Gee, Lucy Rose, Pillow Queens, Nolan Potter, Chris Owens, Ceremony (Glas-go, btw). Thanks, lots of homework! My top 12 - 1. The Smile - Wall of Eyes. First (to post a list). An extremely deep year for 4-star albums, but I'm not sure many of these will go down as all-timers. I've also included my grade (x/100) for the sake of precision. Did you guys even listen to a fraction of ‘Cowboy Carter’? To all listeners here, please check it out. You don’t have to be a fan to recognize it’s a great one by any metric.
Glad you had the pillow queens in there and watched them and they were great. Update. Their drummer Rachel left the band. Now a 3 piece with a touring drummer.

@ eh..he obviously knows if he portrays that he has the same/similar tastes as the other guys then it’s not as interesting…so chooses to be different on purpose
Jason, I was expecting at least one of these in your top 25.... maybe in the top 50, then: The Decemberists - 'As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again' Chime School - 'The boy who ran the Paisley Hotel'
well, good chance the new Falling Up/The Chilling Alpine Adventure album which is released tomorrow, 12/27/24 will be on my list. Unsure when that list will be coming tho. It could be in mid January, I dunno. Geordie, Opeth and Blood Incantation are the only clear reps from the Prog and Metal scene (and Priest I suppose)..although Rosalie Cunningham I knew about and have liked her past stuff a bit, I'll have to earmark...a few others as well Mk Gee. I would pose to Jason if he's claiming Geordie's album is 1st of its kind to have clear cut virtuoso type playing in the indie/alt/art aesthetic...has he heard DIRTY LOOPS for example? Their new EP has all that for the most part, although maybe leans more on Jazz than Geordie. Greatest songwriter of the 21st Century?..Casey Crescenzo of The Dear Hunter?

Isaac Roux 'Troubled Waters' was a nice surprise, not the biggest fan of male singer-songwriters, but this one is really strong (except one cheesy track). Also: - Sylvie Kreusch 'Comic Trip' - Nicolas Michaux 'Vitalisme' - Edouard van Praet 'Mascarades' (except the stupid happy hardcore track, wtf is this doing on such a great alternative album) - Calicos - Sugarcoat It (nice indie, americana) - Bobbi Lu - Arrow Four - Meltheads - Decent S😂x - Ão - Ão More (from late 2023, but my most played album in 2024, sounds great). Many of them released on Mayway, they did a great job this year! Label of the year for indiepop / alternative.
Forgot a few ones: - Bolis Pupil - Letter to Yu - Aili - Nandakke - Bluai - Save It for Later - Reinel Bakole - Healing Exhaustion - And They Spoke in Anthems - Still - DC Salas - The Places I Call(ed) Home - Lefto Early Bird - Motherless Father - Eosine - Liminal [EP] International favorites: Nilüfer Yanya, Kacey Musgraves, St. Vincent, Norah Jones, Diane Birch, Jessica Pratt, Faye Webster, Floating Points, Phoebe Go, Maggie Rogers, Beabadoobee, The Smile, Rosie Frater-Taylor, Drahla, Fabiana Palladino, DIIV, Yard Act,...
My favorite 5 for 2024, and you haven't heard of them, are: Quivers - Oyster Cuts, Marina Allen - Eight Pointed Star, Thus Love - All Pleasure, Best Bets - The Hollow Husk of Feeling, Mt Misery - Love in Mind.
Anyway you've heard of one them as Quivers - Oyster Cuts has made 78 on Jason's 26-100 list. Pink Smoke is my favorite track on the album. You boys have introduced me to dozens of act I haven't known.

I did 69 albums this year .. still narrowing down final top 10 but winner is London Grammar The Greatest Love ...has moments of Massive Attack, great vocals and an interessting lyrical slant
Sincere thanks for what you both offer, it personalizes the music, can’t get that on Apple 🍎 or Amazon or on other platforms on RUclips, thank you! Jason (434) album reviews really amazing Man, do you have a 9 - 5? 😂 Charlie XCX - brat, I’m extremely curious, they tried to make Kamala brat we see where that led😂 For me give me Last Dinner Party lush ambitious grandiose just in my lane. Lemon Twigs, Father John with “Misty” found their way into my heart ❤️ Walt Disco anything reminiscent of Bowie catches my attention. When you consider what these truly diverse Artists do they so creatively respond to the World around them how they react to everything they experience, absorb and in that sense I can’t wait to listen to Jason’s #1 Christopher Owens only because it fascinates Me someone who suffers to this extent an extent beyond what most experience and yet can achieve such Art such inspiration to Me that’s the most significant most astonishing Artist of ALL! In that same vein Nick Drake moved me so deeply, and NO Joe, do I really believe he’s as significant as the Stones, Beatles, or Dylan, I’d be a little crazy, which I am but the “Backstory” just enthralling! Lastly thank you so much for highlighting my comments, have you all decided to not highlight any further, don’t get it twisted “ain’t Mad at ya” my only intent was to contribute something small to what you all do, BEST WISHES in 25’!!!

For me, 'Cindy Lee - Diamond Jubilee' takes the crown. No other album felt as impactful. I'm usually not a fan of double albums where they could have been curated into a strong single album. Here we have a triple album with little filler. Lots of great tracks like 'Kingdom Come' and 'If You Hear Me Crying'. The GeoCities non-streaming initial release felt like a throwback to simpler times.
For me, it’s way too damn long. I also felt absolutely nothing while listening to it. I can’t understand anything that they are saying at any point, a lot of the songs sound the same, and while I do like the fact that there’s some classic 60s brill building styled pop on it, I HATE the way the album sounds. It sounds “stripped down” and “lo-fi” to the point of being thin and skeletal and nothing.

Ahahaha apologies to your cat but thank you 😘 xoxoxo
Thanks Jason for the Joy Hotel selection. Great album start to finish. Will follow them from here on out. Great content. 👍🎶❤
Have you ever asked Kram if he wanted to sit in once in a while?
Yes
They told Kram to scram
We miss Kram 😢
It would be nice for him to appear as a special guest from time to time.

Thank you Jason for giving Merce Lemon some love. Guys where do you go to find new music? Happy new year by the way!

Like and follow all the sites talking about the stuff you’re into. Happy New Year! -Jason

I just listened to that Christopher Owens album; ooh it is good. Excuse me while I check out some more stuff from your lists.
I see that trend of songwriting + great playing. Technicality is getting less hate these days. I even saw Adrianne L wearing a dream theater shirt.
As always, there’s plenty to dig into on your lists. My list will be coming shortly. Great to see some deep-cut commonalities like The Medium.

Yes Joe my man with imaginal disk and Brat in the top two spots! I love that both you and Mike the snare had the same top two, it just validates my opinion even more😉 (and no I will not make a list of my favourite albums of the previous year because these two albums are all I need!)
that opinion being that there aren’t any better records out of 2024 nor more important records and no one can convince me otherwise!
Yeah I just saw Mic’s list. Gotta say I’m pretty pleased with myself for that. - Joe

decent year , it really falls off for me after 40 albums or so
While I personally didn't care for a lot of the albums in questions, it's crazy that Deep Purple, Black Crowes, Jerry Cantrell, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Slash, Eels, The Jesus Lizard (I do like this one), Buffalo Tom, Smashing Pumpkins, Sheryl Crow, and Collective Soul all released albums in 2024. It's possible to make a 2024 year-end list containing new material by alt-rock outfits who peaked 30+ years ago.
Primal Scream, the Dandy Warhols, Shed Seven, Better Than Ezra, Eve 6, and Soul Asylum also put out albums this year.
@@echosmyron1278 yah it did seem like a senior tour this year , i liked some of the dandy warhols album
Excellent list, bengal. Cool that we have the same album at #2. 🎶💜💜

One underrated gem that's a must-hear: The Sea Kings - Fear is all Around (Iffy Folk)
The fact that a serious contender for album of the year isn’t on any other year-end list that I know of could drive be crazy if I let it.

Anyway, here is my top 25 list for 2024:
25. Azure - Fym
24. Airbag - The Century of the Self
23. CEN-Projekt - The Story of Enja
22. The Decmeberists - As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again
21. Emerald City Council - Motion Carries
20. Ritual - The Story of Mr. Bogd Part 1
19. Joe Deninzon and Stratospheerius - Imposter!
18. Mile Marker Zero - Coming of Age
17. Kite Parade -Disparity
16. Steve Hackett - The Circus and the Nightwhale
15. Neil Morse and The Resonance - No Hill For a Climber
14. Beardfish - Songs For Beating Hearts
13. The Pineapple Thief - It Leads to This
12. Oddleaf - Where Ideal and Denial Collide
11. Versa - A Voyage A Destination Part 2
10. Bend Sinister - Mostly Great Things

8. Rosalie Cunningham - To Shoot Another Day
7. IZZ - Collapse the Wave
6. Guster - Ooh La La
5. Albion - Lakesongs of the Elbid
4. Circe Link and Christian Nesmith - Arcana
3. Cloud Cult - Alchemy Creek
2. Big Big Train - The Likes of Us
1. Barock Project - Time Voyager (Superb Symphonic Prog - Very best album I heard all year, perfect score - 10/10)
Yeah, way more prog-centric than my tastes. The only ones I heard were Rosalie and The Decemberists. -Jason
My top 12 -

Adding to my own message because I forgot Phosphorescent and John Cale, and I'm sure many, many others.

First (to post a list). An extremely deep year for 4-star albums, but I'm not sure many of these will go down as all-timers. I've also included my grade (x/100) for the sake of precision. Yep. Should be out in a few days
Jason, Walt Disco is a revelation! Thank you! ❤🎶✨
Yeah. Now that you mention it, that's a no-brainer Michele album.
@ Yes! 💃🪩🖤
Typical Jason/Joe contrast where Joe has a lot of artists/albums I know and Jason has so many artists/albums I've never heard of. Love it.
Jason always tries so hard to be contrarian and non conformist.
@nechadi Jason just has a very unique taste. I don't think he's trying to be contrarian. I used to think that but I don't now. Most of the time anyway
@ eh..he obviously knows if he portrays that he has the same/similar tastes as the other guys then it’s not as interesting…so chooses to be different on purpose
Nope. I just like what I like
@@nechadi I see zero evidence for your assessment. Why would you assert something like that without evidence?
Jason, I was expecting at least one of these in your top 25.... maybe in the top 50, then:
The Decemberists - 'As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again'
Chime School - 'The boy who ran the Paisley Hotel'
Chime school just outside my top 25. Decemberists was a 3.5 so it missed the top 100
well, good chance the new Falling Up/The Chilling Alpine Adventure album which is released tomorrow, 12/27/24 will be on my list.

Crikey . I must be old British and odd .. but heh yes all 3. Not a great deal in common it seems these days . not to worry I will investigate some stuff.
Charlie XCX - brat, I’m extremely curious, they tried to make Kamala brat we see where that led😂 For me give me Last Dinner Party lush ambitious grandiose just in my lane.
I don’t have a 9-5. I teach guitar a few days a week. -Jason
@@TastesLikeMusicnaturally what else would someone with your special gift do but what they loved 💗

My top album too the last dinner party is
1 songs of a lost world the cure 2 diving deep live tori amos 3 luck&strange David Gilmour
Could have been cool as an EP. But having that sound for a double album. Noooo way. - Joe
It took some time for me but this is an excellent album......
