just got here almost 3 years later but anyway, great review, thank you! My opinion on this and pretty much everything regarding the final product of a guitar tone can be summarized in this old saying "it's not the bow, nor the arrow...it's the archer". The dinamics and touch of the player makes a BIG percentage of the final tone. Casually I experienced this in real life when assisted to a Malmsteen clinic (funny you are using his signature guitar in this video) and got to listen him playing with the guitar disconnected...HIS TONE WAS THERE there regardless of no amp being on!

  • @BCTGuitarPlayer
    @BCTGuitarPlayer 4 года назад +3

I don’t care what anyone says: if you ran that through a mock-up setting, live in a bar, the average listener would not know the difference. For the money that you’re paying for this little unit, it’s super versatile and it’ll do anything you would need it to do. Would you actually use it live or in a recording situation? Probably not, but I think you could fake it (if you were trying to) in front of a panel of people, they probably wouldn’t know the difference. Great demo, thanks.

I've had at least 4 PODs...basically every generation, OG, XT, X3, HD I got em all to sound good live, through FX loops, tubes and cabs. I really like the HD, its got great cleans and the Recto model is easily the best of the stock high gain tones. If you push it hard and put an EQ in the loop, it gets into Mark territory. Y
ou know you're happy with the tone when you can play for 5 hours without touching anything other than a guitar and Jazz III.

Your editing skills with newer tech make that old bean sound acceptable. Back in the day, I did not have such luck.
I had the Pod Pro for a short time. Was supposed to be my be all-end all live rig solution. I researched it, listened to samples, ordered it, waited for it.. Then was disappointed by it.

Nice video! I bought one of these a couple of years back but never really got around to using it. I'll probably give it a try once I've figured out how to use my new recording setup properly.
It would be nice to hear what you can do with a Boss GT-10, or maybe a GT-8. I have them both and struggle daily with the GT-10 that I, for some reason, hold on to as my main unit in 2019. Sometimes I believe I've managed to create a decent sound, only to wonder the next day what the hell I was smoking the day before :)
I guess listening through headphones 99% of the time doesn't help either. I probably should stop doing that. Haha...

I have one of these PODs and I agree about the overly compressed sound. When I used it with headphones for practicing I had ear fatigue pretty quickly although it has some interesting and enjoyable tones. I even had tones downloaded, there's a ton of sounds (essentially settings) based on EVH, Gary Moore, Metallica or whatever sound you want, you download it and insert it in the pocket pod and play! You can even disengage the speaker simulator (the AIR switch on the back) and play through a normal guitar amp. But the over-the-top compression makes things annoying after a while. Good demo, nevertheless!

I just sold mine a few weeks ago as it sat unused for so long
surprisingly decent tones for the small form factor/price, good idea for a series actually, unearthing older modellers and seeing what you can coax out of them tone wise
i somehow still have my behringer v-amp (in pedal form) and an old zoom 3030, which i will hang onto i guess for silly sentimental reasons and that they're worth next to nothing

Might have to grab a V amp at some point just to see how it compares.

if you have the time try the digitech gsp 1101 as well =) 1unit rackspace, discontinued, the beta firmware allowed you to load custom IRs into it, made it sound really good , there was a pedal version as well which was massive/integrated footswitch
used the gsp1101 for a while, really good for 4 cable method as well, solid FX on there too (lexicon verbs etc..)

@@paulbradshawguitar I've wanted to try one forever, but just haven't. I also want to try one of digitechs floor preamp multi effects with tubes. RP 7 I think it's called?

ah yeah that's bringing it back, remember seeing those back in the day
had the gsp1101 for a while, made a short video on it way back when, think with more tweaking, better cab impulses could go even further

Can I get stereo sound if I take output from phone output with Y Jack ?

I have one of these. I thought your video would make me want to dig it out again but I was wrong. If Leon can’t make it sound good then there probably isn’t a good sound in there.

Hi Leon, how did you hook it up? I use mine with headphones and it doesn't sound great... Especially the higher gain tones.

I had pod xt live, and through an amp always sounded good at very low volumes.
BUT, at stage volumes it sucked horribly, all those great presets I had either turned to mud or so bright was unusable. Was a huge disappointment. And no good through a PA as it did not have XLR out.
Sold mine, in mint condition back to guitar center about 4 years ago. Think they gave me 50 bucks,lol...
For bedroom level practice they sound fantastic. But not in a live band situation. And yes, I tweaked and tweaked till I twerked.

People want to hate in the POD but it can be surprising how long it took to get substantially better and just how good it was when it came out.

I'm like, nearly two years late but my only gripe with the pocket pod is that I can't use that virtual editor. For some reason, any time I'd plug it in to my pc, after an hour or 2, the pod resets itself and gives me a stock stone that won't change....
