    The chair spring that you heated up has been normalised not tempered.

    There used to be all kinds of scrap around. Now days seems to be far less

      This is true! Too many people weighing it in these days, but there is still stuff out there to find.

    Magnets don't stick to stainless steel.

      Zink is not an alloy it's an element. If a metal has more than one element in it it's an alloy steel is an alloy. As it's made of canon and iron plus other elements some times. Zinc is an element that is heat to a liquid and the metal is dipped in it. It's a coating.

      Some alloys are magnetic.

      I GOT a swaybar from a Mercedes after an accident. It's been great for hot punches and other tools.

    Take the metal and sell it to recycling. Use the money buy what you need.

    magnets can stick to stainless steel just be careful. I had a bulk milk tank that was magnetic and very obviously ss
