Hi John. I was just about to message you on Canadian Apples when you mentioned me. Psychic! The Canadian Apples are different than those in the US. Originally, they were slightly darker, but the two big differences were they were a glossy label and had a very dark green background, so dark that it almost looks black. I think they are quite attractive. I've intended to do a Canadian Apple video so I'll accelerate the attempt so you can see the variations. Great topic, by the way.

The German "Mind Games" LP demonstrates exactly why the label colouring should be light as possible so that ALL the print is legible.

I really enjoyed this...I hated the 1995 Apple and glad the newer Apple label look very nice. I bought a RAM album last year with the full Apple on both A and B side...My favorite is my White vinyl German White album with a nice deep green Apple label. Thanks for sharing

In England, the first 5000 copies of Let It Be came with a 3/4 inch front to back booklet. It contained color pictures from the film, including post movie shots where Paul had shaved his beard. The booklet came set in its own 12" holder. The book was about 8" tall & wide, (if my memory serves me well). The album & booklet were in the same shrink rap. I was lucky enough to have a friend pick one up for me, for 10 dollars, if he could have the first listen. He & I went to the film debut, & sat thru it 5 !/2 times. Back then you only had to pay once, stay as long as you like. Ahhh the good old days, movie matinees for 25 cents, pay phone 5 cents, haircut 25 cents, a full meal at a diner & change back from you dollar. Who could forget... HEY you kids get off my lawn! Young wiper snappers!
As an aside, snapping a whip, to show your skill at precision control with your hits. Example: standing 5 cigarettes in a row, & announcing which one you will hit. This was big entertainment with the young boys before video games.

As an Australian I can tell you Australia ALWAYS got it wrong in label layouts. We should've floowed the British example, particularly with 45rpm singles. Especially we should've retained the punch-out optional centre.

In Canada there is a solid green apple label issue of Imagine and there is also one plastic Ono band. The special label imagine and the black and white plastic Ono band Apple label are also available as Canadian pressings. The green apple standard record company label are pretty rare. J. Levy author of "Applelog". The Canadian and American Apple records reference series of books.

Here is an oddity they may interest you. The Australian release of George Harrison's single My Sweet Lord had two green apples instead of the usual green apple sliced apple combination. Also unlike the UK version My Sweet Lord was backed with Isn't It A Pity instead of What Is Life.

Late 1970s Beatles and solo records were put out by Capitol in the US, and I’m assuming Parlophone in the UK, because Apple ceased to function as a label in 1975. McCartney hated being on Apple even when his first album was released. One of the reasons he was suing was to get off the label, which was why most of his solo and Wings stuff had custom labels. The Apple label was reestablished in the 1990sl.

John, I have a German copy of the "Living in the Material World" LP on Apple and my copy has the same custom label as the US and UK. On the upper left hand side of the label it has "EMI Rec LTD" instead of the Apple logo like on the US and UK pressings but has "Apple Records" near the bottom of the label. I have a Dutch pressing of Back Off Boogaloo with a blue Apple label. I have the same Aussie "Abbey Road" LP you have on green vinyl, if its a counterfeit its a good one. How did you still find the Let It Be LP on Apple in 1979?

  • @neilforbes416

The lighter colour was far better so that the print was easily legible. But I always hold that the same label design should be on BOTH sides of a disc. They should've used the cut-in-half design for both sides or the whole apple for both sides, not one-of-each. The American red label should not have been permitted. EMI Britain should've insisted on the standard green Apple for the US/Canadian issue for Let It Be. After all, Capitol was only a subsidiary of EMI, not a Division. A subsidiary in the EMI group, is akin to the infant toddler in the family.

However you get distracted removing albums from the sleeves and even more so when trying to return them to their sleeves, horrendously noisy too!!
I think if you prepare them before transmission it will save you time and irritation on this side.
Sounds like you were eating before this video which is NOT advisable as you can hear it in your voice!
One of the issues we are advised in radio is NO FOOD before a show and NO fizzy drinks as they make us belch!
