THAT was amazing. Phil sounded somewhat like I would expect. Soft volume, but very articulate and solid. He knows what he likes (to paraphrase). Everything he said about the future pretty much came together. Incredible. How many people know themselves that well at 24 or 25? Or even know themselves at all. "I'm a drummer" (understatement). Interesting also to hear just a little bit of the upcoming 'Lamb' album. Putting 5 musical geniuses (I know, an over used word but true in this case) together to write music, all with pretty strong, smart musical personalities, how could they NOT have arguments? But the thing is, they were mature enough to get past that, the ego thing, and concentrate on what the music wanted to be. They all made each other better! Alchemy. Phil in particular seemed the glue that welded them as a band. An epic ensemble. Great tape!
This is an incredibly good interview by Neil and Ric. Phil is so relaxed, honest, and casual as he still had his innocence about the media press then and clearly these guys were huge fans of the band. It is also squarely in the middle of the 5-piece area where they were all still bickering amongst each other and a long way from the early 80s. Fantastic visual transcription as well.
The interviewer told me that was his standard question, to always ask what the performer thought they would do in the future. Many years later, it is always the most interesting part of his interviews.
The Man's is legend. I've been tuning those his great turntable records since 1981 "Face Value", "Hello, I must Be Going", "No Jacket Required" till 1989 "...But Seriously". Mr. Collins is a great one in the world music history without any doubts. All the best from Ukraine, ZP City.
The transcriptions are mostly for foreign speakers, or to give background from the interviewers on what was going on in the room. It's half a miracle if I can get most of the words correct and spelled right :p
So funny how even way back then there was "controversy" about the band not playing enough old stuff in their show. LOL. Reminds me of when I heard a guy on a trick of the tail tour audience recording complain that they didn't play The Knife (which in all honesty they should have probably played more after Peter left, but not necessarily on that tour).
Until the very end you might have forgotten that Steve Hackett was even in the band. It's always "Mike, Peter and Tony" in references. I can certainly understand why Steve left. To this day his career both as a live performer and his multitude of albums has been really impressive. I'm a huge fan.
It shows how Steve melded perfectly with the band musically, but really only melded well with Peter personally. It's a shame the 3 didn't try harder to make the other 2 feel welcome.
What a great early look at Phil and Genesis. They were just starting to make an impression and Phil gets asked about making a solo record. That worked out pretty good I think. I liked the interviewers comparison to Yes and Tull. It wasn’t that far off at that point I think.
Where I grew up, we were saying those same things, as part of our regular jargon, in the 1980s. And another one...."turns me on", or "turn somebody on to". And that brings up a silly memory from then. If somebody got me high - shared some reefer with me, basically - I'd say, "yeah Joe turned me on yesterday". That was our normal vernacular in the early Eighties. But I realize now that it comes across as sounding queer.
He did a bit but not musically - just about that Steve was a newer member than him. To be fair they didnt ask him anything about Steve. Phil regarded himself and Steve as "new boys" then - and so did the others it seems. 35:09😂
I think it's Hackett's fault, or also his fault. He has an aloof air, seems to hold himself apart from others. I don't mean he's wrong. Just his personality. But perhaps he is pretentious. Seems it.
Question: Has Genesis realized its 1974 goal of becoming rich & famous? Phil: I don't think we're going to realize that for a long time. Soothsayer - sage - prophet. Phil really had a feel for this kind of thing. It was actually 10 more years before Genesis would become famous.
"We don't argue as much as we used to..." Well, that certainly turned out to be wrong since Gabriel left the band the following year, and Hackett 2 yrs after that.
If you listen to the subtext of what Phil was saying, especially in another interview we have with him, Phil didn't get along with ELP, other than maybe Emerson. He said "I don't like them as people". So that probably colored his opinion of ELP more than anything.
This little poor guy became one of the richest most powerful musicians in the world. Interesting interview for the heir apparent to the money and grandeur of Genesis. Gabriel did allright, but not like this dude.

Well said. They are truly "old souls."

31:55 “I dunno… I might run a music shop…” or maybe he might become one of the most famous pop singer and drummer of the 80s
The interviewer told me that was his standard question, to always ask what the performer thought they would do in the future. Many years later, it is always the most interesting part of his interviews.
I think you meant one of the most "famous" pop singers and drummers of the 80s. 😊
Infamous??
@@Vinyltimes65Yea I embarrassingly found out not too long ago that infamous has a negative connotation and I definitely meant ‘famous’ haha

I was at this concert!
FANTASTIC!!
Thank you guys! Once again you are giving us fascinating stuff.
Another gem! Thank you G museum !
I’m discovering the band right now and listen to him in that stage is amazing!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this gem ❤
Lovely stuff. Thanks for sharing :)
To the transcriber: Phil did not say ass, he said arse. That's how we spell it in Britain. :-)

@@GenesisMuseum LOL
Pedantic when it suits, typically an English thing.

Phil and Mike played on Steve's "Voyage Of The Acolyte".
33:15 Phil is talking about his solo album ideas.

Fascinating, especially the bit about what where do you see yourself in 40 years ? 😄
I talked to Rik and he said that was his "signature" question when he talked to musicians
Playing in a big band! It took about 25 years for that - but it was his OWN big band.😂
Good stuff
I couldn't stop laughing at PG yelling on "Supper's Ready" at the beginning. This guy was crazy lmao.
That footage around 9:12.....??????where does that come from??????
A movie from 1969 called I Start Counting where Phil does some acting, but was too small a role to get an official credit.
@@GenesisMuseum wow, I thought he stopped right after calamity the cow, nice find! Is that his only scene?!?
@@frk75 That is his only scene in that movie. He did other movies and TV shows too, but not all are thought to exist anymore.
I love all the "groovy" 60's phrases hes still using like "get into that", "Blew it out" and "get off on it"
it's a bit of a time machine

15:23 Phil wanted to have John Martyn as support back in 1974!
What's that crazy footage of Phil @9:10?
From one of his pre-Genesis acting roles
30:48 I took my son to see "The Musical Box" play in San Francisco when he was 12 (almost 20 years ago, yikes) So I guess Phil got his wish, by proxy.
Amazing how predictive some of these old interviews can be.
He did not speak about Steve Hacket that much it's a shame !
I never understood the distain (at worst) or indifference (at best) that the band had for Steve
Steve Hackett is the soul of Genesis.
He did a bit but not musically - just about that Steve was a newer member than him. To be fair they didnt ask him anything about Steve. Phil regarded himself and Steve as "new boys" then - and so did the others it seems.

🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
So 2 out of 3 Genesis lead singers played gigs from a wheelchair! 😂😂
"We don't argue as much as we used to..." Well, that certainly turned out to be wrong since Gabriel left the band the following year, and Hackett 2 yrs after that.
Did Phil just call himself middle aged at 23?
Didn’t like ELP? Didn’t like Carls drumming? WOW!! At least Carl didn’t do a lame ass Motown review style show.
