- The Carpenters Burt Bacharach Medley
1. Is that the electric clarinet I saw? It sounds really like a Soprano Sax. Now that's being said I'm not familiar with that instrument.
2. I think it's weird that a person can play the drums and still sing. It's a very physical instrument and you're really exerting yourself. How do you maintain a steady air stream?
3. I think it's awesome that they're playing for the military. As a former military member I approve.

Karen was so talented and you can see how happy she was back then in the early days. Yes that was the electric clarinet. They always had great musicians to back them up. Bob Messenger played bass, flute and sax for them. Quality all around, if you listen to more of their music you will see for yourself.
karen had incredible vocal and breath control.. there is a video of her in concert from 1976 in osaka japan and during one song transitioning to another song she LITERALLY holds her breath for 20 seconds holding a note!... also so great in this LIVE performance was that it was live, no autotune, 1970's sound equipment and without a moment's rest of singing and playing the drums.. the carpenters, karen and richard, started out with more of a jazz style, thus their fast tempo of most of these burt bacharach melodies....
Thank you for your service.
Jaybriel, Singing while playing the drums, unlike chewing gum, talking and walking all at once Haha, Karen was or is for the ages. Thank you for Serving, good lock on your Channel.
It's a real clarinet being processed to sound like an oboe...or English horn.
If there was ever any question about her LIVE singing, drumming this is the vid to watch. She just kills it and still sounds pitch perfect- outdoors! Respect and gratitude for your service 🙏🇺🇸
I wish I had perfect pitch sooooo bad.
Super tight and professional from them live. Impressed.
I'd be so nervous to do this stuff live.
Trumpet Major in college. Still amazed at Karen's talent! Will always love that voice. And she was a real deal drummer!!!
Ahh trumpet player. I started out at trumpet but my lips were for low brass. I switched to Euphonium and i actually improved when I practiced.
When they drop into “Make it Easy On Yourself” it slays me every time
I love how she sounds essentially the same live as she does in recordings, and I guess critics back-in-the-day used to note that as well. I also love how Richard's vocals really complement her in this, and his keyboard part is really interesting in this as well.
I'd like to see Richard Carpenter just jam on his own during a composition session. Just watching composers and arrangers do that is always interesting. Just to see the process would be fascinating.
As a drummer, it takes some breathing coordination to play AND sing. It’s always going to have a give and take vocally or drumming wise. Karen was so Uber talented, there there doesn’t seem to be any let down for her. Just a once in a lifetime musician.
See and you'd know better than me. I don't know how it is I just know it can't be easy per say.
Karen and Richard are awesome....... BUT Karen and her drums are PHENOMENAL!
I'm doing a reaction to her drum compliation soon.
Jaybriel Akoi make sure it’s the video that’s titled ‘Karen Carpenter kickass drummer’
That one’s got the best variety of clips of her doing her most intense drumming

Amazing. A live medley and they kill it.
And Karen was only 20 or 21 when they did this.
I can tell you, her talent was not appreciated then like it is today.
Funny how that works right.
PEACE TO YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO ENJOY YOUR COMMENTS ON CARPENTERS MUSIC.
Awesome reaction/commentary on one of my favorite live performances by Carpenters. First, I think that instrument is an Oboe, it’s in a lot of Carpenters music. I looooooove seeing Karen drum and this being totally live is amazing. She’s singing and drumming like a mad woman. That is her greatness. That they took that away from her I think started the spiral. And thank you for your service.
Bert gave Close To You to Herb Albert. Alpert said Ill give it to The Carpenters and a little “diddy” turned into a number 1 hit!
Her playing it metronome perfect while she sings like that, as if it's not the least bit challenging to her. Amazing. I remember hearing her as a kid on the radio in the early 70s and that voice sticks with you.
Def did with me. It all started with merry Christmas darling.
Great reaction/review! Karen is amazing here! I am a drummer. Yes it is hard to sing while playing drums. Thank you!
🔥✌🙂💯💕👏
I don't know how I missed this when you did it. Another great performance. The strength and breath control she has. Incredible.
What an arrangement of songs that were made popular by Dionne Warwick! Karen at her best behind the drumkit!! Both only in their early 20s at that time...talent like no other!
Love that Robin Williams anecdote...
Thank you for reacting to this video!
Thanks for the comment and being a sub. I appreciate it.
Great Find Mr.Akoi, the Carpenters raw talent really shows, were you surprised when they played “Tainted Love?” Thank you for your service. Good luck
Well someone recommended so I take no credit for that.
When did the carpenters perform "Tainted Love"?
Ticket to ride, please!!!
70's they played this on the radio.... if all songs charted back then like they do now...one love.... bb medly letme be the one..reason to belive.....they might have had double their chart hits
I'm sure glad someone finally reacted to this video. But, I wish it was someone else. This is Karen at her best. An amazing live performance. And, you ramble on about everything but that. Now, that's weird.
Thanks for the comment I love you too.
Playing drums, which was her passion, allowed Karen to have control of her tempo. I speculate that gave these early concerts a little more snap.
As you see : this band was well rehearsed ! ----------------they were all pros.-----------------------------wOLFsKY9, 74 Y/O
No band did songs like that for a show
Idk if it is clarinet or oboe but this is what I'm talking about!
Thanks!😁
Lol, looks clearly like a clarinet to me. But I'm not a woodwin. Could be anything right.
Those electric wind instruments had different "voice" settings & could mimic other instruments. Same for the electric flute. They could also add harmonics to the "voice", sounding like two instruments.
Doug Strawn played an electric clavinet if that's how it's spelled. It was something he invented. It is similar to a clarinet but has a slightly different tone.
Wizards!
Is there a reference i don't know?
Not really. It’s just that their live performance was soooo gooood.
@@ronkrupovich7152 ohhh I see I see. Ya you know some people are just gifted. I'm pretty jealous to be honest. I just wish as a society we could discover all those wizards better.
THIS WAS ONE OF SEVERAL '70 ----'71 -----'72 LIVE ENTRIES ON YT--------------Personally the '72 Australia Concert is better, just because it's inside. ----------------------------------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
She’s playing the drums and singing like an angel and you’re talking about a clarinet? And you call her talent interesting? Then discuss robin Williams? Omg.
The awesomeness of RUclips. I can do whatever I want on my channel.
Jaybriel Akoi sure thing! The next time I know to scroll on by. You almost lost me on the inexplicable giggle. I hung in there for an even worse reaction though. But Good luck!
@@tgstancat , agreed! I subscribed 10 minutes ago on another Carpenter video. Now I'm unsubscribing! LOL! :D
good reaction you really need to react to her drumming !
I have one of those videos coming up. But I'm not a drummer so I wouldn't know anything to be really honest.
@@jaybrielakoi7747 It's still impressive even to those of us who don't play the drums. There's a couple different videos on YT showcasing her drumming.
Wasn't she something?!?!
Please do Goodbye to Love. It has an extended fuzz guitar solo at both the middle and the end of the song, which was very controversial among Carpenters fans at the time, and upset a lot of them because of it’s harsh rock sound that fans weren’t used to. This song is famous in guitar solo/rock history and it’s considered by many to be the first “power ballad”

I love the Carpenters and this was good but it sounds rushed to me. The drummer keeps the tempo for the band and I think Karen may have been a little excited.
I'm a brass player so i'm usually the one that ruins tempo. I'm just not gonna say anything about tempo.
Go back to the OG song on the album “Carpenters” she is spot on. Karen was magical and pulled it off live in a park by a hospital with a big crowd in high heels dancing backwards. Oh wait, I’m combining memories. This song slays me from when I first heard it on my new LP back in the day…
