    1. Is that the electric clarinet I saw? It sounds really like a Soprano Sax. Now that's being said I'm not familiar with that instrument.
    2. I think it's weird that a person can play the drums and still sing. It's a very physical instrument and you're really exerting yourself. How do you maintain a steady air stream?
    3. I think it's awesome that they're playing for the military. As a former military member I approve.

Karen was so talented and you can see how happy she was back then in the early days. Yes that was the electric clarinet. They always had great musicians to back them up. Bob Messenger played bass, flute and sax for them. Quality all around, if you listen to more of their music you will see for yourself.

karen had incredible vocal and breath control.. there is a video of her in concert from 1976 in osaka japan and during one song transitioning to another song she LITERALLY holds her breath for 20 seconds holding a note!... also so great in this LIVE performance was that it was live, no autotune, 1970's sound equipment and without a moment's rest of singing and playing the drums.. the carpenters, karen and richard, started out with more of a jazz style, thus their fast tempo of most of these burt bacharach melodies....

I love how she sounds essentially the same live as she does in recordings, and I guess critics back-in-the-day used to note that as well. I also love how Richard's vocals really complement her in this, and his keyboard part is really interesting in this as well.

I'd like to see Richard Carpenter just jam on his own during a composition session. Just watching composers and arrangers do that is always interesting. Just to see the process would be fascinating.

As a drummer, it takes some breathing coordination to play AND sing. It’s always going to have a give and take vocally or drumming wise. Karen was so Uber talented, there there doesn’t seem to be any let down for her. Just a once in a lifetime musician.

And Karen was only 20 or 21 when they did this.

Awesome reaction/commentary on one of my favorite live performances by Carpenters. First, I think that instrument is an Oboe, it’s in a lot of Carpenters music. I looooooove seeing Karen drum and this being totally live is amazing. She’s singing and drumming like a mad woman. That is her greatness. That they took that away from her I think started the spiral. And thank you for your service.

Her playing it metronome perfect while she sings like that, as if it's not the least bit challenging to her. Amazing. I remember hearing her as a kid on the radio in the early 70s and that voice sticks with you.

Those electric wind instruments had different "voice" settings & could mimic other instruments. Same for the electric flute. They could also add harmonics to the "voice", sounding like two instruments.

Doug Strawn played an electric clavinet if that's how it's spelled. It was something he invented. It is similar to a clarinet but has a slightly different tone.

Please do Goodbye to Love. It has an extended fuzz guitar solo at both the middle and the end of the song, which was very controversial among Carpenters fans at the time, and upset a lot of them because of it’s harsh rock sound that fans weren’t used to. This song is famous in guitar solo/rock history and it’s considered by many to be the first “power ballad”

Go back to the OG song on the album “Carpenters” she is spot on. Karen was magical and pulled it off live in a park by a hospital with a big crowd in high heels dancing backwards. Oh wait, I’m combining memories. This song slays me from when I first heard it on my new LP back in the day…
