"For All We Know" from "Lovers and Other Strangers"(1970) is a wonderful song - especially the Carpenters' version - but "Thank You Very Much" from "Scrooge"(1970) is definitely better and should have been awarded the Oscar for "Best Original Song" in 1970 !

Out of all the plastics of Hollywood, with their unnatural and superficial dialogue came these three genuine men. Shows you that the times can never change sanity.
I think they should have given a lot more credit to Karen Carpenter. Without a beautiful voice like hers to carry the song it would have gone nowhere. Karen Carpenter is the real superstar here. A star on Earth and now and forevermore a start in Heaven. Rest in peace, sweet Karen.
The problem with people nowadays is that everybody wants too acknowledge the singers when the singers are not responsible for writing these amazing songs too begin with. its like the writers and musicians who are up all night working countless hours in the studios are hardly ever acknowledged, its like everybody wants too give all credit too the singers who are not the authors of these amazing songs these nominated songs the authors are the true winners here Karen Carpenter was just an amazing singer but never a writer
These are the 1970 Academy Awards. The Carpenters did not release their version of the song until 1971. So acknowledging Karen by way of credit was an impossibility.

So you see The Carpenters' version of "For All We Know" had been in release for three months. I thought they should have at least mentioned Karen & Richard's version of the song. The only reason this song will be listened to 100 years from now is because of the Carpenter's version.

What a deserving--and surprising--win! Up against all those big talents, a great song from a small "New York" movie. And The Carpenters cover helped immensely. Jimmy and Fred are gone now, both far too young and still full of talent. It's great to see this again. Petula Clark's performance that night was also terrific and gave her a hit also.
@@sportsmediaamerica Pet sang it because there was a rule at that time the performers at the ceremony had to be in movies also otherwise Jimmy could have been the one to perform it. Sadly his voice was so hauntingly beautiful and never got the credit it deserved.

He is 8 years old, and I say he is my best friend. The part in this video where he looks across and smiles at his band mate says it all. I have a friend who has passed, but looks like Jimmy’s twin. It’s a shame he couldn’t finish writing the other songs before he moved on. Thank you so much for responding.

I was very close to my grandfather. I saw that smile many times and it melted my heart. When he liked the way I sang something, he would look like a proud Papa. The loss of him was really hard on me. He would ALWAYS encourage young musicians. My best friend of 20 years I met because Jimmy was mentoring him when we were working on our project. The 20 year old, it the time, who was working in the band I recorded with was such a talented piano player, Jimmy called him to tell him how much he liked his work and how good he was. I'll just say despite losing his way for a while in the '70s, it's Jimmy who had the truly good heart and loved fans and was the kind, generous man. To get off the subject a little, I like your youtube name.I love crows, they are so smart and I liked the movie The Crow. Are you on Facebook or Twitter by chance? My dear friend Lisa worked for Jimmy doing fan club work for his band The Remington's as well as Bread during the '96/'97 Reunion tour, she has a private Bread page on there. He said if he had to do it over again he would have been firm about being lead singer. YES, He was a wonderful person, kind, funny, smart, talented, humble. It's cliched, I know, but to know him was to love him.

I watch this from time to time and with Burt Bacharach's passing I watched it yet again. I am having a bit of a chuckle reading the comments because we talked about this a lot. We were working on a full CD when he took a turn for the worse with his lung cancer. We were going to write some new material together. I'm a rocker/power pop singer and he wanted a rock project. He loved singing rock and gospel and had intended Bread to be more of a rock/pop band than soft rock only. I actually was getting airplay on the Adult Contemporary market despite being a rocker, here we go again, lol and that's basically how we met. I was told by my promoter to record a cover of a love song from the 70s or 80s, I had all originals, to get more exposure. We were working on one of his songs "Once Again" when he got laryngitis. We were able to finish one song only and guess what it was....."For All We Know". That was the love song I chose to record for the project. Yes I know how fantastic the Carpenter's version is, of course but since Jimmy co-wrote it and we recorded it as he meant to be, a song about new love, and as a duet, I will always consider our version the best. It's a shame he died before it was released because he was excited about promoting it. Without him, well that was the end, tragedy. I was so honored, other than the demo, he chose to record his Oscar winning song with me. He never recorded it, not even for Bread. Therefore I know firsthand how he wanted it to sound. I miss him every day.😭
The absolutely magnificent song "Thank You Very Much" by composer Leslie Bricusse from rhe great musical film "Scrooge"(1970) should have won "Best Original Song" at the 1970 Academy Awards ceremony!! "Scrooge" got royally screwed!!!!

I’m a 37 year old fan. I’ve been into The Carpenters most of my life. Its so hard to believe that song came out in 1970!

I absolutely agree with that. He was incredible. He was also an amazing guy. Very talented and likable. Sure do miss him. His smile was mesmerizing.
