Labyrinth is a god tier song
Edit:
My rankings
Tier 1
- You’re on You’re Own Kid (specifically because of production and melody, not lyrics).
- Labyrinth (timeless, beautiful melody)
- The Great War (addicting melody all throughout the song, lyrics are very good)
- Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve (production is amazing, lyrics as well)
- Glitch (I love the complexity in the production, a very sensual song, easy to groove to, etc. Don’t like the bridge though.
Tier 2:
- Lavender Haze (I hate the bridge but I could see it being played at every house party and I’m preparing to get tired of it)
- High Infidelity (ok production, love the vocal bridge)
- Bigger Than The Whole Sky (amazing lyrics, love the guitar)
- Maroon (I like the production, but the use of color in Taylor’s songs/finding things that have that color is getting overused
- Midnight Rain (nothing much to say)
Tier 3:
Paris
Snow on the Beach
Sweet Nothing
Tier 4:
- Mastermind (lyrics are kind of juvenile/sounds like something a beginner could’ve wrote)
- Karma (love the melody, but Lyrics are also juvenile)
- Bejeweled (same reason as Karma)
- Question (same reason as Karma, love the bop-ey melody of the bridge though)
- Vigilante (the lyrics very much lack depth)
Not me making the playlist and then reading the comments 💀
Why is the playlist so different?
@@foreverAmkYeah, I’m confused too. I’m wondering did I miss something when watching this video?? 😵💫
@@chikahoshi he updated the playlist when Joever happened. YLM is actually supposed to be the new track 5 of the new tracklist.
As someone who has experience infant loss and miscarriage, I’ve latched onto Bigger Than The Whole Sky so HARD. Even though I can objectively understand that it’s an odd addition in the context of the story and vibe of Midnights, and it isn’t necessarily about Taylor experiencing that…but I just feel so seen with that song and I will forever be grateful to Taylor for writing it. Isn’t that the wonder of music?
❤
I was initially sceptical about Dear Reader as an opening song but something about “so I wander through these nights…” introducing the album is really clicking with me… it’s like she’s opening a book and starting to tell you the stories of the nights in question. great vid as per!
THISSS like join me as I wander through these midnights
The way you describe anti-hero made me snort, "I don't know if she's the smartest girl in the room, but she's a very commanding girl" 😂😂😂
The best way to explain anti hero... Perfect
Justice for Question...? !!! It is literally the most passive aggressive, insane, fun song on the record. She wrote that song specifically for Harry to hear and to get her message across, and if you get it, you get it! It gives AYHTDWS energy, but more passive aggressive and I love that for her.
Question is my favvvvvvv
It's literally her worst the lyrics are so fucking cringe and childish i rather losten to ME! Than ever listen to it again
Question rules and I guess it is fine if someone doesn’t like it. BUT EVERYONE KNOWS IT IS SO GREAT!
question can e so relatable it's scary
question rukes and that isn’t even a question.
I love the dear reader appreciation. I never understood how anyone could place it last in their ranking
Paris is the last of my rankings, with 3am tracks but with 12am only, Snow On The Beach is the last in my rankings.
It took time to grow on me, it used to be a complete automatic skip but once I heard the bridge more I grew to like it enough to not skip. I just find the “Dear Reader” repetition kind of boring. But halfway thru the song it picks up and becomes more interesting lyrically and musically.
IKR ITS SO ANNOYING DEAR READER IS ONE OF THE BEST ON THE ALBUM
Along with Karma, I listen to it the most out of all the Midnights tracks.
Dear reader is my number one

The way he called me out with “I bet you also love daylight” 😂 Daylight and The Great War are masterpieces
I do think The Great War is better than most of the tracks tho. I return to it way more than Maroon even
I was also called out LOL
Hahaa same 😆 like you got me there!
The Great War is one of my favorites on Midnights. Definitely top 5 and one of my most replayed.
I dont care for Daylight but I do ride for The Great War. 😂🤭
people don’t really get the 3AM concept… they’re all deep and sensitive because that’s how 3am feels after the euphoria pf midnight melts down. The fact that those 7 songs are placed as 3am is perfect.
People get it but the songs don’t match that…like explain how Paris and The Great War fit into the “deep and sensitive” vibe. Quickly.
@@theswiftologist yeah Paris not so much but Paris is rarely a song people say should be on the standard edition. The Great War however is about two people going through a difficult time but being able to survive it and move forward. That is definitely “sensitive” and mature topic. Also the production of the song matches more the 3am vibe.
But then we have glitch thats more sensual and just like sayin thats wrong that was a mistake but withouth that much regreat and we also have @@vladleiva4055
I cackled so loud when you said ‘I bet you like Daylight’ when you talked about The Great War because its me. I love both songs 💀
Oh my god I laughed out loud when you mentioned that Joe hears these songs and has nothing to say 😂 Question is proof that Haylor is alive & well and always will be (at least in my mind). One of my favorite interviews is where Taylor talks about Style and the inspiration behind the song. “This song is actually about those relationships that are never really done. You know, you always kind of have that person. That one person who you feel like might interrupt your wedding. And be like don’t do it because we’re not over yet. The one person that floats in and out of your life and the narrative is never truly over.” DEAR GOD
btw the Christmas tree snow globe is magical 🎄

Putting Dear Reader in God Tier where she belongs. Thank you for giving her the appreciation she deserves.
‘Bend when you can, snap if you have to’ is one of my favourite lines Taylor’s ever written.
same!!
Idk if there's something wrong with me but a primal instinct awakens inside my psyche when "good girl sad boy big city wrong choices..." starts playing. Like I get feral when Question comes on shuffle. She deserves all the attention and love.
The brief five seconds when you took Bejewelled out of God Tier, I screamed into my phone ‘Don’t you dare, put her back’. And you did, therefore all is right with the world.
Haha
everyone thank zach for giving us our sunday bread 🥖
THANK YOU ZACH🙏🙏🙏
Thank you Zack!!!
Thank you zach 🥖
thank you Zach 🥖
totally agree with you re: mastermind - when she said "no one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so I've been scheming like a criminal ever since" has SUCH humor and playfulness to it
she's unhinged. love her
I love putting dear reader as an opening track, it adds depth to the record, like yes I'm taylor swift but I don't actually have my shit together ever, so don't take advice from me because I'm an unreliable narrator, I don't wanna tell people what to I just want to express my neurosis. Also YOYOK works as a great bookend.
I totally agree because dear reader is basically an opposite of yoyok, like at first she is anxious that so many people rely on her for advice when she actually is just falling apart and is not a reliable source. then ending with yoyok, she realizes how far she’s come and that she is actually proud of herself. the song yoyok starts off kinda sad but ends on a hopeful note. Like start to finish, this would leave me going into the album thinking one thing and going out thinking another thing.
OMG AN UNEXPECTED SURPRISE *mentally preparing myself for labyrinth slander though!*
Thank you for your hard work, zach!!!
LABYRINTH DESERVES BETTER IT IS SO PRETTY
Also, If your planning on doing more videos for this series with her other Albums, I think it would be interesting if combined folklore and evermore together, and made an tracklist that you think are the best parts from both of the records. Anyways, thanks for the video
oooooh yes!
I’m so happy that you appreciate Question…? and Midnight Rain. They are soooo under appreciated and I’m happy to know that my favorite Swiftie RUclipsr enjoys those too.
l like midnights is like the folklore to evermore; they’re both incredible albums but you can tell they’re just her warming up to diving fully straight in. Folklore being the warm up to evermore and now we have midnights being the warm-up to whatever her next on the nose pop record is.
_’Time passes me by and I don’t notice anymore’_ is honestly a new Taylor lyric well done mate😂
i am sorry for your loss zach, losing someone is always painful, stay strong ❤
OMG the fact that you only rearranged the songs in the album but changed the whole vibe story and feeling of the album is insane, I wish you were in the room when they were deciding this UGH
Omg can't wait for the next podcast! Thanks for doing this video. Yay! Hope you had a wonderful and safe trip there. I need to watch those soon! :) Happy Holidays coming up to you and your family. :)
Finally someone who loves question!!! It’s so underrated, deserves way more appreciation honestly it’s annoying how people overlook it all the time
I will say I like the Great War because the first time I heard it, it made me think of my husbands battle with cancer. I COMPLETELY agree that it’s not the best song on the album but it makes me reflect on the way art is given meaning by who is consuming it. If Great War is just about a fight with Joe (which feels not super deep) it’s cool that I can hear it and relate to it in a totally different way! Just thoughts. 🤗
I kinda think The Great War is more about her fight with Joe in a way that it was a fight with herself. I like to think (and kinda believe it to be true) that the song is about Taylor being self destructive in the relationship and causing all these fights and that makes it much more deeper than just a normal couple fight haha.
@@sujal4078 yes, every single taylor swift song will ALWAYS have a deeper meaning, she is a lyrical genuis
I really loved ur vlogs. I’m sure I’m not the only one who really appreciates your vulnerability, so thank you!!!! ❤❤
But I also adore your other videos!!
thank you so much abby!
Great episode! I’m gonna try the new track list. I love the production on Glitch.
Love the new rankings! Love your vlogs and hope you’re doing okay. I have a different interpretation of glitch and where it goes chronologically, for me it seems clearly about joe and the “I hate accidents except when we went from friends to this” time period of them becoming serious (so after bejeweled). Because I’m the song she’s saying I’ve only known love that fails with dudes who give me nothing, this is a glitch that we are together and happy and not what I thought would happen. Also the line “I’m not even sorry nights are so starry bloodmoon lit, it must be counterfeit” seems like “starry eyes sparking up my darkest night” + “the moon is high like your friends were the night that we first met” + “put you in jail for something you didn’t do”/“somewhere in the haze got a sense of been betrayed”. Also, I love the Great War and high infidelity for the exact same reason you dislike them, to me they are ear candy instead of a terrible sound, I can’t stop listening from the first beats, and no I don’t like daylight or Dorothea, ears are just different sometimes.
I love that you're obsessed with Dear Reader ♥️ I think it might be in my top 2 on the album, and I initially called it a SKIP on first listen. I deserve to be shamed.
THE GIRLIE GIVING OUT SAMPLES AT COSTCO! Literally a single has nvr been described better😭
i think you hit the nail on the head with the great war and being okay with loving a song that isn’t the objective best on the album. i love the great war but i’m never gonna say it has better lyrics than other songs. i just like the melody and the vibe
Yeah, and I am really obssessed with the bridge. And not to mention, the rhythm of the chorus. haha
The thing I love about your videos is your analysis of each of the songs they are just spot on and the rearranged tracklist always works
A NEW EPISODE OF THE POD?! also this year I listened to the pod more than Taylor herself. 😘 never expected this trajectory
well to be fair we have hours of content ....
I just found you through tiktok and wow, you have such a great voice for videos like this! I loved listening along to your insights even if they didn’t always align with mine 😊 I love hearing other people’s opinions of her songs!
Would you consider doing a video where you rank your personal top 13 Taylor Swift songs? I think it would be great to hear why you love them and what you think of the songs!
babe is really feeding us a Michelin star feast… IM GRATEFUL
The lyrics to "The Great War" are rich in imagery, symbolism, and themes that are far from simple or boring. For example, the reference to their “banners" being torn down and the battle being taken "underground" suggests a secretive or hidden aspect to the relationship and the mention of "crimson clover" could be seen as references to the loss and sacrifice of the relationship. This is also perhaps a connection to “Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve” and it’s mention of the years of tearing down ‘their’ banners and yet the tomb wont close and how memories feel like weapons. While the idea of using war as a metaphor for a relationship may be simple, the themes within it offer a nuanced and thought-provoking exploration of the complexities of this relationship and the challenges that come with forgiving and healing from it. Also I absolutely cannot stand daylight, but totally respect your opinion.
This!! It's why it became one of my favorite songs in the album, but I do agree that the sound of it is a bit jarring. I wish it had a different track behind it because the lyrics are beautiful.
Paris is my favorite on the album, and I agree it's not objectively the best, but I remember you were talking about how bad the shade line was and, honestly, I was fully expecting you to put it in "meh" or "not today" and I was pleasantly surprised at what you had to say about it and where you put it.
I just found your account recently but I just wanna say *thank you* for being a normal Taylor Swift fan who isn’t afraid to just share normal ass opinions. I’ve been a fan of her since debut but never really got into the fandom because it frankly scared me. Watching you has fulfilled my need recently to have genuine normal discussion about her and her work.
Im so onboard with your track list!! Even though I like Vigilante S*it, your narrative makes SO MUCH SENSE.
I still need to take some time to forgive you for putting Paris in very very good, but I’ll get there Zach 😂 at least it gets cut on your track list
Loved your little tree there. So sweet! Happy holidays!!
I'm here very late, but i love ur album list!! You cut the right songs, and made it make more sense to me, ty 💖
I do like your approach of trying to be more cohesive with the reshuffle because I do agree with you that Taylor Swift albums are sometimes very chaotic tracklist-wise and this one is no different. However, I do feel that having all the slow songs next to each other would create a sense of fatigue and make me feel a bit tired listening to slow Taylor swift ballad after slow Taylor swift ballad. Still, I love your points made and great video and analysis!
your makeup looks great, dewey glow!
Great video thank you for the entertainment and can't wait to listen to this track list.
Can’t wait for the next video x
I love Dear Reader! I feel like it works so well as an ending track but could also work well as an opener like in your rearrangement!
i always learn new words while watching your videos so tyty
When you took Bejeweled out of god tier for a moment but not anti-hero was shocking! Also I love the Christmas tree snow globe in the background, it’s very beautiful
You do these rearrangings so well!! I agree You’re on your own kid sounds like it should be at the end, like a realisation not an emotional track 5
Nice Zack! So good to see the Dear Reader love! Where do you put Hits Different?
I loved your playlist! I loved WCS and Maroon back to back, so powerful! The clean version of Lavender Haze threw me off 😂 I don’t think I’ve ever heard it before. I loved it going out on the end of YOYOK, it was so positive ❤️
I want a swiftologist video going through the midnights track list knowing what we know now with TTPD
I really really love your expressions😉❤and i love the vid as well❤
I'm glad!

Merry Christmas, Zack!
I love that Dear Reader and Question are god tier for you cause they are literally my number one songs from Midnights!!!!
you have a good taste. I think the order you put these songs in your tracklist make perfect sense to me, sounds very cohesive but i think that musically and sonically doesnt work much in my opinion I mean put these much more tense concepts and sounds in the beggining of the album literally when i listened the playlist you made, it put a bit anxious. i think how it was originally released made it a little bit more digestible.(to put upbeat /down beat tracks) actually until I listened to your order I didnt realized how dense Midnights is.
Got this notification while re watching the 1989 tour film.
i am here for the tea honey! spill the tea sis!
I remember on first listen, I had a feeling that if Midnights were just reordered a bit, it would be her most grown up sounding album yet. After listening to your playlist, I can confirm that hypothesis! Well done, listening to it in your order makes the album so much darker, which I am definitely here for. So thank you, I will listen to the album like this from now on.
PS thank you for leaving in Labyrinth even though you hate it 😂
If I can be brutally honest, I've never liked any of your videos because our opinions are just so damn different. But this, THIS video is simply phenomenal!!!!! You are spot on with the track list. 10/10. (btw thank you for not getting rid of The Great War lol)
Listening to this after TTPD… girllllll
my thoughts on your revised tracklist (as someone who would probably advocate for very few changes to the tracklist at all):
1. thematically i see how dear reader would make a great opener, but sonically it just doesn't really set the vibes well. this is a pop album at the end of the day, so the first track kinda needs to be a banger. also, personally i think lavender haze can't be beat as an opener because i'm someone who does see a narrative in all of midnights (standard edition), and it sets the scene really well: taylor awake in the middle of the night with joe, trying to blot out the present as she begins to reflect on the past.
2. honestly agree, anti-hero is one of the songs that really sets the vibes for the album and although i LOVE LOVE LOVE maroon it makes more sense later in the tracklist when she's lost in the past.
3. disagree... both labyrinth & sweet nothing are songs where taylor is making peace with the present after all the chaos of the past and those fit at the end of the narrative really well, not the beginning.
4. yeah this works fine. midnight rain works very well as one of the first reflection songs about the past, i would personally put yoyok first but whatever.
5. i mean if you're intent on yoyok being a closer than yeah wcs is the next best choice for track 5, and i see how it could fit the narrative. again, i think yoyok is definitely a track 5 and i like how it begins a pipeline of songs where taylor is spiraling into the past, but i see where you're coming from.
6. agree with this one completely tbh.
7. glitch is not good enough for a place on the standard edition (sorry) but if it had to be, this would make sense
8. nah... bejeweled works well as the end of the reminiscing tracks on the standard edition. she's still lost in the past but at least it's a semi-happy memory, which transitions well into labyrinth and then the rest
9. karma is again a song about making peace with the present so it should be closer to the end but i get where you're coming from
10. track 10 is too late for question, it belongs earlier with the songs about spiralling in the past...
11. the great war doesn't fit in the narrative anywhere and that's why it's a bonus track, but this placement kinda fits i guess
12. mastermind not being a closing track just makes so sense to me sorry... like how does the story continue after that
13. yeah this is my issue with your tracklist... the narrative is gone. i get that it was a kinda vague story to begin with, but now there is absolutely none
14. this works i guess but the current version is better sorry
as for the songs you cut... i mean you have your reasons so that's okay, but removing vigilante shit is kinda weird when it inspired the cover art
this would be my revised tracklist
1. lavender haze
2. anti-hero
3. you're on your own, kid (i know i said this is a track 5, and it is, but from a narrative viewpoint it kinda messes things up. i feel like taylor wrote it and was like "this is track 5", but then she just shoved some random songs before it to make that happen, which made the narrative less clear)
4. midnight rain
5. would've could've should've
6. question...?
7. maroon
8. vigilante shit
9. bejeweled
10. labyrinth
11. karma
12. sweet nothing
13. mastermind
epilogue: dear reader (idk where to put this song. mastermind is the perfect closing track but so is dear reader in an entirely different way. very similar to folklore with hoax and the lakes). imo this should've been a target exclusive along with hits different, but dear reader was the one song that got released at 3 am.
bonus tracks (should've been released a week or two after midnights)
the great war
bigger than the while sky
paris
high infidelity
glitch
snow on the beach
hits different
gosh i spent way too much time writing this
i agree about LH being a good opening track. if you look at reaction videos (including zach's) everyone's like WOAH this is crazy from the opening synths. whereas if your first impression of this brand new album was dear reader's white key piano chords, you'd think that midnights was folklore/evermore part 3
as a fellow crazy person i relate to your experiences :D really happy this channel popped up in my recommendations
i listened to your playlist and can confirm it is SOO much better
loving your london boy, wanting your paper rings blablabla😂😂

Random suggestion, I would love your “daily prayer” as merch. Either written out on a candle or a notebook cover 😊
Great idea!!
i love the great war and don‘t like daylight but i gotta say it‘s one of the few taylor songs where i don‘t necessarily relate to the lyrics i just love the song sonically and i can‘t explain why
The Question…? and Dear Reader appreciation is much welcomed! Love these two.
Bejeweled is another one of my personal favorites from the album.
Didn’t like the sound of High Infidelity on first listen either, it’s grown on me a little bit, but I understand that someone might not like it since it’s not her best work.
Your tracklist is very interesting, more thoughtful than the original one.
I agree with every song on your tracklist except for Dear Reader! I really just can't vibe with it and hasn't grew on me since the album release. It probably never will but I'll respect yours anyway!!
Finally somebody that loves Question💙
I turned off the World Cup final to watch this. Absolutely obsessed 🫶
I love your track list! It's so creative. The cut tracks can be bonus tracks or something. Speaking of which, what did you think of hits different? I don't think that was covered here.
hits different almost doesn't exist to me cuz its not on streaming lol
@@theswiftologist LMAOOO true I thought it was a fun song but very different than everything else we got
I like the vibe of glitch but I can’t stand how forced the tying together with a stitch lyric sounds to rhyme with glitch
I can also lowkey sense that but I kinda overlook it sometimes because I love the melody and the vibe.
dear reader appreciation im so here for that! one of my fav taylor songs
Question...if you were to include Hits Different on the tier ranking and include it in your tracklist, where would you put it?
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who thought Midnight Rain would be one of the best on the album before the album dropped. I would say that was one of the ones I was most excited for and it’s definitely in my top three for midnights. Not sure if it’s #1 but it’s up there.
Finally someone who loves Dear Reader!!! It's SO GOOD!
I always enjoy your ranking and fixing track-list videos! Would you consider doing one for the supreme Speak Now? I think Innocent (and a few other tracks) could be cut and the track list from track 1 to track 5 should be: Sparks Fly, Mine, Back To December, Speak Now, Dear John and I would like to hear you thoughts. Thank you Zach
I don't know how to fix the gospel.......
Dear reader as the first song is such a galaxy brain idea
This is genius (even if I don't share any of your ranking opinions lol)! Where would you put Hits Different, if anywhere?
I really am in need of friends like Zac ✨ someone I can really dive deep with in Taylor's chaotic mind

Anti-Hero
Maroon
Mastermind
You're On Your Own, Kid
Lavender Haze
Question…?
Snow On The Beach
Bejeweled
Karma
Sweet Nothing
Bigger Than The Whole Sky
(i think the original tracklist is ok but needs a few changes, the 3 am tracks to me feel a bit disjointed from the original 13 but i needed a closer so i put BTTHS for vibes more than lyrics but it sounds like a pretty good to me.)
I love when he starts praying on the vídeos lol
I like Midnights a lot, but your new Midnights track list, are all in the right spot!
Finally someone giving "Question?" And "Midnight Rain" the recognition they deserve
You're so well spoken and i bet I'm not the first person you're hearing this from
Daylight and clean give me the same energy and I love it!
Would've Could've Should've really impacted me as I've been through similar things in my life. I think the writing there is fantastic and definitely an A or A+ for me. The song ranks top 10 of my all-time favorites because it was very heartfelt and I could hear her pain
Here's me reimagining the Midnights' tracklist. I redid them based on Taylor and Joe's near-breakup events. We know that he went on a trip to record a film and it was during this period where Taylor and Jack made a good part of the album, so within this reimagining, things between them were not good. Joe being Joe postpones the serious conversation they need to have, mainly to clarify things between them, but decides to take a "break" and go on a trip. In this process, the concept of Midnights: Reinmagined (Enzo's Version) was born. Taylor to understand her confused feelings, seeks some resolution in music/in the studio (the whole Midnights aesthetic and world). The tracklist explores the "we are on a break", her thinking that they really broke up, refathoming and re-accepting who she is as an artist, remembering events and relationahips from the past, then falling back in love with Joe, the settling of accounts between them and her re-asserting herself as an artist.

19 - High Infidelity (remembering about Calvin Flopharris)
20 - Sweet Nothing (realizing that Joe is another version of Calvin Harris wearing a wig)
21 - You're Losing Me (the real ending of the album that express their present situation)
You put all my favourites in the meh section so we definitely have opposite tastes!
love it
Wcs has helped me start processing stuff. This song made me feel seen.
Thinking about which would be my pick for album opener, I realised that there aren't many songs on Midnights with enough strength. Dear Reader is nice but I think it sounds a bit anemic... I do agree with you that this album has some very good songs (I think YOYOK, Anti-Hero and CWS are the best ones, lirically) but they still can't compare to her previous works.
I do like this record, but it is a bit all over the place, and some songs don't fit at all (Sweet Nothing and Paris come to mind). In my opinion, this album was an excuse for the tour, but it could've used a bit more editing and focus in the production.
“Dear Lord, hope you are doing well” 😂😂
