    I appreciate the coach's emphasis on keeping ample distance away from the ball for faster raquet speed, and the need to keep the hip loaded before, during, and after the shot.

    very hard to fix that forehand, many coaches tried already :) . The shoulder is not involved at all in the forward motion, shoulder looks stuck firm like a rock.
    Very interesting perspective about forehand technique from this coach

    My advice is to be more balanced Harry. Neutral to forward motion. I noticed when you hit, your balance it's usually slightly shifted to the rear and you hit a bit late. I'm an old school player too, similar in age. I had to re learn everything to the modern form, footwork, and game. It's possible to change over, I did it. Took me about 15 months to re learn it all. 2.0 in July of 2022 after 30 years of no tennis and I was completely out of shape. I'm a low 4.0 now with a forehand weapon and strong serves, all court player. You can do it! The wall is great! Very old school. It works!

    This guy elluded to a lot of things without saying them, which is often important because u can only change so much at at a time. The timing of making ballance is key. If u are still making steps and losing ballance while swinging u cant feel like you are finishing and striking cleanly

    Difference between shorter forceful hit and wider radius of swing then letting the racket's weight plus momentum do the job.
    You should have that awingpath that allows your racket to follow through naturally without exerting too much energy.

  • @Plato-gm4vo

    The speed vs power thing doesn't make any sense, in the end when you hit the ball you are transferring energy from your racquet to the ball and only two things matters in that: the weight of the racquet and the speed the racquet is moving, it's just basic physics. You can't change the weight of the racquet so the faster you swing the heavier/stronger your shots will be, what does he mean by you don't swing faster but stronger?

    • @jerome_morrow
      @jerome_morrow 3 месяца назад

      Probably trying to get Harry to stop arming the ball. Slower with the arm, rely on weight transfer and the kinetic chain to get the same or higher racquet head speed. What happens at the racquet head is a combined product of several components. Relying purely on the arm leads to the spasmodic jerk that Harry has.

    Notice all the good wall hitters are great Fade Drive hitters. Using the Draw against the wall doesn't work so well. He is right about the semi open stance but confused a bit about why as well as no reason to go neutral going to net as that is a logical Fallacy.

    I don’t want to be negative but I don’t think there is any valuable info here… He’s right in terms of mentality (pro vs recreational) but in terms of technic he’s all over the place (he even lets the ball bounce twice a lot of time because he wanted to show you open stance) Anyway it’s still a fun video!

    Matt's coaching seems good. He's got a clear philosophy and explains it well. Of course there's no single way to hit a forehand, even a modern one. Just the other day, Sutateni (a Japanese coaching channel that features former Japanese #1 Suzuki Takao and #3 Onoda Michihisa) did a video on this very topic, and they say that it's important to step with your right, left (hold a beat) and then swing through in a neutral or closed stance.
    Different strokes for different folks.

      Don't agree with his idea, at 07:40, of changing stance based on direction you want to hit. Don't agree at all.
      As a simple example, if I am hitting a cross-court rally from the Deuce court, I am not going to change stance if I want to slightly change direction and hit down the middle. He wants you to open/close up the stance based on direction. This coach makes no sense. Who is he???

    • @TiltedTennis
      @TiltedTennis 3 месяца назад +1

      Yeah open, semi open and closed stances imo are more to do with how you move to a shot: your time and it's position... Which will pretty much dictate your target location. It should be pretty clear that there are many stances a player must be able to do, and therefore a coach must not deal in absolutes (right and wrong.. I prefer more ideal or less ideal)@@Better_Call_Raul

    • @Better_Call_Raul
      @Better_Call_Raul 3 месяца назад

      @@TiltedTennis I am not looking to criticize the guy. Just trying to understand him. For baseline rally balls I mainly use a sideways (neutral) stance. From this same stance I can hit either cross-court, middle, or down the line. *Same stance* , just contact a bit later/earlier for intended target. *Same stance*

  • @TiltedTennis
    @TiltedTennis 3 месяца назад

    So I'm referencing your hit just after the 8min mark, I haven't ever seen you play before either: i think your feet and balance for the most part seems reasonable. Your swing i see some issues that weren't really addressed: your racquet head on takeback (it's a bit of a stretch to call it a unit turn as you do move the shoulder too early) is vertical/20 degrees backwards, you're not pronating enough or extending your elbow for the racquet drop and your forward swing into follow through seems really rigid and tight. All these factors inhibit power to some extent.
    So imo, coil up a longer in your power position with the left hand helping keep the racquet tip more forwards so your palm can face outwards (right), extend the elbow so the palm faces backwards/downwards and accelerate fast!

    It's all fine and his lessons are spot on in term of the point of kinetic impact. But tennis is about balance and physical exertion. If you can't be at the right place consistently because you're tired or winded, you're going to reach or hit late. Most people can hit fine. And most people can't be where they need to be to hit. Get in better shape to play better tennis. It's that simple.

      He’s trying to say that this way is more for the average player. We aren’t fit enough and capable enough to consistently hit like a pro. This way uses less energy as you aren’t putting so much force strength into the shot which consumes energy. By freely swinging out stretched more the racket swings faster giving your shot the same level of power but with less effort. Therefore you can hit this shit more consistently more often.

    I’m struggling to understand why there’s so many online coaches stating what ‘bad’ things will happen if you hit with a closed stance…if you hit a closed stance properly, your shoulder will be in the correct position…do we even watch the pros?? They sometimes hit with a closed stance..many shots have slight variations in footwork and the blanket statement of a closed stance being wrong is the wrong way of coaching

    I have never seen such a confusing lesson in my life. While I agree you should be loading with the outside food, the fundamental reason is to transfer weight from that foot as you are swinging the racquet to the inside leg but in all the transformed FHs you hit you never once transferred your weigh into the shot. When you rally with Gu and Chris, your FH are chronically late and you slap through the shot at the very last second. IMO that's due to a lack of preparation from footwork and so you are gauging the ball until it's right in front of you and then you improvise. I would love to see you collab with Ian W. and let him videotape you and see if it jives with this guy in Japan. My guess is Ian would give you different advice.

    If I may offer a suggestion to Harry, it’ll be to use a lighter racket. It looks to me you’re often late and only swing halfway. A lighter racket might help your timing. No shame to use a mp or even a team racket if that helps your timing.

    Well I’m not sure why someone who has been playing for so long needs a lesson ? The teacher I’m sure has good intentions but he is explaining At a micro level, where to place this and that and where to hold this. This may be good for the first time player lesson but there should be some natural ability that surfaces after playing a few times. Maybe this would be good for the first time player.
