      I must say the racquet face down at the end of the swing is brilliant instruction. It ensures racquet has control and shape which allows you to have trust and hit bigger. As a self taught player I use to do this but sort of forgot and seeing this brought my forehand back in a big way. Jonas hoping for more from you and Nikki

    This was helpful. I learned tennis and watched lots of RUclips circa 2013 when all they taught was the windshield wiper. I had hit most forehands swinging upwards and not through the ball at all. Lots of spin and was hard to to play against, but predictable

      Wholeheartedly agree! I took the idea of getting the racquet a bit more in front with the help of shoulder turning, then swinging once it got a bit more in front. I tried it yesterday, and found my tennis after 15+ years

      I aggree, my forehand wasn't even that bad, better than most of my club partners at ~4.5 (Germany) I'd say, but since implementing the shoulder turn and the wrist motion I have WAY more pop and consistency. It's actually insane.

    Hey Jonas, I’ve always been a 4.0 player with a terrible forehand. Terrible due to my mechanics and could never figure out how to make it fluid. Ive always had more bad days due to tensing up and never being able to wrap my head around it… Until Today!!! Holy crap! I never thought of just getting the racket a bit more in front via open shoulder turn, then using that momentum to swing! Like wtf! I would always swing from when the racket was more behind me. This would explain the unstableness/wobble during impact.
    15+ years of trying to figure out a forehand, and today I am blessed with this video. I can’t thank you both enough!! Jonas, this couch… I would steal or hire in an instant!
    One video I would love to see is backhand volley. It’s very misunderstood, with grips (using full continental or slight eastern b). Probably the next toughest understanding shot

  • @Fernwald84
    @Fernwald84 2 года назад +2

    I agree overrotating is a problem but I think it is more a matter of leading to loss of directional control than loss of power. Power is directly consequent on racket head speed and I don't see how overrotating slows down racket head speed. But what it does do is emphasize the lateral arc of the swing rather than keeping the swing oriented more straight ahead. Increasing the lateral component requires more precise timing to prevent unwanted deviation left or right from the intended target. With a more straight line swing the ball will naturally go where you are pointing without the need for the greater timing demand of the lateral swing path.

    Great Video Jonas, Nikki. My coach has recently started to focus on the technique of this forehand. After a few initial hits, I was hitting heavy and deep balls.
    To really hone in the whip motion and get the ball moving through the court, my coach suggested I stop the follow through in front of me (racket face down) I decided to hone this in, I’m going to take this into my matches for the next few games. It may look awkward, but who cares

    Jonas compare your shots in this video to your game in Malta. The improvements are very obvious to me, you were getting way more power down to the court faster and it seemed more effortless. I like Nick his instruction is practically Perfect. The only thing I could think of for more easy power is something in the footwork that you guys did not touch on. I understand why you can only absorb so much but when hitting a ball if you combine that full swing to the fullest extension out front with the apex of the bounce of the ball? You are hitting the most easy power that you can find in my opinion. Carlos Alcaraz is very nimble on his feet for a reason, he can maintain that heavy firepower for longer with less effort.
    I actually watched the backhand Master glass with Nick and that was amazing instruction! His nuances that made the backhand so comprehensive. I with a basic understanding was able to clobber the ball with weight that prevented the opponent from returning the shot. I can't tell you the satisfaction level of being able to hit a powerful one handed backhand, it's something I've never ever achieved in a one-handed backhand in many decades! Thank you to you, thank you to Nick that backhand class regenerated my love of the sport basically, it was just superb.
    My only difference on the forehand with Nick's, is I do open up the butt of the racket as far as I can, especially on the low balls and I get more racket speed. So two things I seem to differ from Nick frankly I don't know if they're right but they work for me. One is I open up the butt of the rocket more to generate more racket speed, secondly I hit for the ball to impact at the apex of the bounce so this requires aggressive footwork to combine everything. In conclusion I wasn't expecting Nick to be as good as he was, he's got an expert eye at how to improve little nuances that really elevated your game. I'm envious it wasn't me on the court getting the lessons. Thanks Jonas another great video much appreciated! Kudos to Nick love to see him back.

    Sorry to be one of "those guys" but I would add that your racket preparation is a bit late. Try to prepare so your racket is only traveling BACK 2 FORWARD after the bounce. Right now it's going at least 270 degrees (start to contact), try cut it down to 180. Easy free power.
    Granted it's not always possible to do every shot in a match. Sorry.

    Jonas, what is your forehand grip? This video is very helpful. Thank you. I was converted from an Eastern to a SW forehand grip at 72 years of age. Usually instructors don’t try to change the grip for students over 50….. I’m 74 now and fairly comfortable with my new grip. However, I get in trouble when I don’t swing through the ball, but try to accentuate the low to high movement… Ciao, John

  • @iamNathanGreen
    @iamNathanGreen 2 года назад

    This is so funny because at 11:55 Nikki talks about don't opening up the racket face at the follow through. Which is exactly what I noticed with my forehand when I took slo mo footage of me the other day. I did that because balls were flying long a lot, so I wanted to compare slo mo of pros vs mine. And this was the only real big difference I noticed. But other forehand tutorials don't talk about this. It's the first time I hear someone else talk about it. Which is refreshing!
    EDIT: btw I see when you look frame by frame that Jonas is still opening up the racket in the follow through, even after receiving the tips. Which matches my situation that even tho you think you're doing it, muscle memory takes over. I think it will take some time, and constant double checking with footage to really fix this problem.
