Thank you for the kind words! And I'm also super glad this got you interested in Chrono Cross, It's a great game! :) Also, that really is super dope as that is one of the reasons i really started trying to take knowledge i learned through speedrunning and explain it in a simpler way!
The main takeaway is just that its not a grindy type game for the most part. It's more of a boss-based RPG. They mainly only level you at these bosses!
Like lets say I have 2 characters, 1 in my party and 1 not in my party. The one in my party, I kill a boss to get a star, and then fight 3 battles and they get stat ups in those 3 battles. And then I do another boss and get another star. The character that wasnt in my party, I understand that they get both stars. However, have they _permanently missed_ on the stat gains from those 3 in-between battles? Or did the second star bring them up to par as if they had done those stat gains?
it's a bit more nuanced than a yes or on actually. So in a simple answer - the one not in your party missed out on the mini-star you got between the 2 stars (and the small hp increases). Also, mini-stars are a reflection of the upcoming star, so your character in party isn't guaranteed stat up for certain stats for it either. But to make a more simplified scenario to use an example, let's use Glenn and Serge and their Strength stat. Serge is in party, while Glenn is not. Serge goes from 9 STR to 10 STR on Boss 1 (the game also rolls at the end of boss 1 to see if you will get the next star: boss 2). In this secario lets assume Serge also is getting the Boss 2 STR. So because he is, when you do enough battles to get the mini-star, Serge goes to 11 STR. then when you go the boss 2 fight, he goes to 12 STR (and the Boss 3 star is rolled at the end of this fight - we will touch on this again in a moment). Glenn is not in the party but Is still rolling. (also, I forget Glenn's starting STR stat, but lets also assume 9 for this example.) Glenn rolls to 10 on boss 1 (and in this scenario, we assume the boss 2 roll will give him the next STR after winning it). When Serge gets the mini, Glenn does not and has missed out on that. So when Boss 2 is beaten, Glenn goes to 11 and boss 3 is rolled. So after the 2 bosses and a mini, Serge got +3 to STR because of being in the party, but Glenn only got +2 cause he wasn't. So yes, In a sense, he missed out on that. However, everytime the game rolls to see if they are getting a certain stat increase, it takes into account their current stat value. So on the boss 3 roll, Serge's odds of getting another STR are now slightly lower than Glenn's (assuming they both have the same growth rate). The game tries to average out stats throughout the game. It tries to converge harder on this the closer you get to the end of the game. So say, you have a character who has been behind on STR cause they are getting a bit unlucky, the closer you get to the end of the game, their chances of getting a +1 (or a +2 even) go up. I hope that makes sense. trying to get across that, yes, they are missing that specific mini, but it doesn't mean they will always be lower than someone getting minis.
What i'm wondering is: what about those mini stat up after a star fight? how many stat up i get before they stop and how many fights i need to be sure that the characters stopped gaining those mini stat boots after each growth level? i usually rotate my characters ater each Star Fight and go fight in the Forest next to the viper manor just to make them gain those stat boots but of course this takes a considerable amount of time and i'm not sure if those weak enemies are good enough to gain different stst boors. How does this work? do i need to rotate my characters everytime just for them to gain those stats without falling behind?
Those mini-stat ups are the mini-stars i was speaking about in the video! (unless by mini-stat ups you mean just hp increases, then im pretty sure you will always get small bits of hp every fight). For the mini-stars, You can only get 1 mini-star between 2 stars fights. So after you get the one between any 2 big stars, then you wont get anymore till after the next big Star Fight. Even if switch party members out, this holds true. But about your characters needing to be switched out to not fall behind, all characters in the game roll for stat increases at every big star fight. So they don't fall behind by not being the battle anymore than they would/could being it. The only thing characters not in battles miss is the mini-star increases.
@@SuperHandi I see, because after beating the viper manor I switched one of my party members but serge and the old party members I had got some hp increase for about 3-4 fights, however my other characters got ho increase and then some stat boost, is that caused by the mechanic that won't let characters fall behind? Does this means I only have to rotate my party members only if I want them to get ho boosts between star fights?. This is correct! However, missing 1 or 2 stats won't change the odds too much. its usually over a larger sample size. I made a tool for myself to give a very rough estimation of stat up chances and if we took Star#2 where Serge is at 10 STR, his chances are ~(+0: 31.74%, +1: 63.52%, +2: 4.74%). However, at Star 2, if Serge was at 9 STR, his chances are ~(+0: 31.28%, +1: 62.78%, +2: 5.94%). Remember these are just rough estimates because I just made a small program for myself for speedrun testing routing/testing, but it's to show that you are basically always more than likely to get a +1. But we can show an example where it is more drastic. Like what if you were still at 9 STR at Star Fight #10: ~(+0: 28.84%, +1: 57.71%, +2: 13.45%). The biggest change in that example is the likelihood of a +2. and because 1 or 2 doesn't change it by much, your odds for +2s would be higher for a good bit going forward even if you got that one. So its a gradual thing.

Yeah, that is why the title says that lol
Stupidest system ive ever seen in an rpg.
That's a fair opinion to hold. However, the system does work very well for the game, the way it is structured, and the large cast it holds haha
this game is a bunch of bullshit
Honestly they did way to much with this system, I’ll pass.
Understandable! If it helps, most the stuff you do not need to know to play and ejoy the game. hell, none of us really knew it when 1st playing the game when we were younger. It only starts to get a bit complicated when you are actively searching out the more intricate aspects (as with a lot of systems in games!). but, yeah, for the most part it works very well in game!
@@SuperHandi okay, thanks that definitely takes the pressure off. I had missed out on this when I was younger and really wanna give it a try
@@luigythakid8818 no problem! The thing i really enjoy about this game causally and now as a speedrunner is that it has a lower skill floor (meaning it's not too hard to get into because even if you dont fully understand thigs, its not impossible to progress) but a high skill ceiling (The game's battle system is really cool and flexible.)
So i would say just go into it not expecting to understand the battle system fully, and youll start to understand it more and more as you play!
@@SuperHandi okay will do. Just got it on 30% off, so I look forward to the game thanks again for the Advice. If the story is as intense and compelling as Legend of Dragoon I should be fine 😄
@@SuperHandi im old but i think this is a "necro" comment?.......either way i know im hella late but THNAK YOU for converting some 1 new to this game. it is one of my all time favorites and it helped kick start my JRPG gaming life.
