this band is absolutely the best crossover and emotional act of this new century, but people still call them hipsters. Audiotree thanks for been the best live platform of the net.
Everyone is someone's hipster. People should just listen to what they like the sound of, and not judge the beards/moustaches the musicians keep and the clothes they wear.
@@Pleasestoptalkingthanks but they aren't shoegaze...lol...hum,my bloody Valentine, ammonia wash, ride...shoegaze ...this is just a different band that sounds like the Japanese band, Envy
I can understand people not thoroughly enjoying the vocals. “Black metal” style vocals took me the longest of anything to get into. But I mean I honestly couldn’t imagine this music with anything other than them. I legit couldn’t imagine it would sound good with actual singing. I feel it that the instruments provide so much melody and harmony that adding in vocals would clash way too much. They would have to be really powerful to keep up and it would be too “un-dynamic” for a whole album. Their vocals are pretty much the same level but it’s when they are present and when they aren’t that makes them dynamic. Idk anyone else kinda feel like that?
Definitely agree with these. For me, I remember listening to them but didn’t “get” it and couldn’t stand the vocals, but now I hear them as an emotive instrument.
It really is fucking perfect, everything is balanced so well. It captures how the song sounds on the album, but also captures how tight Deafheaven are live
This might have seemed weird to me yesterday, but I'm very glad to revisit this video today. Thank to Deafheaven for bringing me this pure passion for music.

I never knew all of my favorite guitar melodies on this album were from Shiv, Shiv has really helped propel the band's sound making this album a whole new beautiful beast!
Shiv does some beautiful work here. He said in a recent video or interview that he had more contribution on this album. Nice to see that. Kerry writes good stuff but seeing a band evolve and share in that process is a promising thing in terms of longevity.
Most of the comments boil down to “I would like it if it was less unique” - There was always a disconnect in my miserable music library between my bloody valentine and burzum now there isn’t
Well said! For me, personally, it was an absolute joy to discover a fine line between Gun Club and A Place To Bury Strangers. That band is Bambara (they also have an Audiotree sesh). You should check it out :)
Perfectly said, thank you. Jesu married shoegaze and metal together seamlessly years ago, but I love how you can hear both elements even more clearly - and specifically black metal - in Deafheaven.
Ill be checking out jesu next. Yeah these dudes actually got me to listen to black metal. Im into anything that rocks. especially those who mix styles.
That is one of the best videos I've ever seen. The sound quality is unreal, flood lights, the camera, the shading, the atmosphere. Thank you to everyone involved, you made something amazing.

Beautiful vocals. I love this band so much as they really appeal to the pleasure and pain in life. The beauty with ugliness, Cold with warm. I love it.
I never get the chance to see them live in Malaysia back then, the chances for me to see them play live is quite impossible, thanks Audiotree for this awesome live performance, the video production and the sound quality is top notch!
I listened this song when I just discovered the band, I liked it but not enough, over the years Worthless Animal became my favorite song and HOLY SHIT, this version is hard AF
All this hate on George's vocals just prove that there are some that will miss the point entirely. If you don't get it, move on to something more understandable to you. Something easier for your pallet. Anyone that's ever seen this band live would probably agree that George commands the attention of the audience and receives it just as much as the rest of the band.
I like all kinds of vocals, but I believe his Black metal vocals are pretty monotone and are the weakest part of the music. Other bands keep it fresh by mixing up vocalists/vocal styles over the song.
Definitely give it another go. I love it more and more with every listen. I enjoyed it at first but now this is my favorite album in their discography for sure
Aside from the opening track, I have found the entirety of the album to have a lot of replay value in ways that New Bermuda did not. The album flows very nicely. Flows very well. I listen to it whole cooking or cleaning. New Bermuda commanded attention in parts but this album can serve as good background music to get tasks done to. The only exception really is "Glint." That song is phenomenal and I sit down to listen to it every time. Easily the best song they've ever written, in my opinion. George Clarke has really pulled out all the stops in terms of setting lyrics and they are beautiful. So, definitely give it another shot man.
In case anyone's wondering what the really weird looking white guitar is, I think it's an Ovation Breadwinner, Robert Smith from The Cure played one for a while.

Yup
Ever since I heard sunbather
Favorite band for over 11 years now, since the first time I heard Dream House. I discovered it on NPR All Songs Considered! 😂
The post-rock and black metal screaming overlapped at the start of this track is so awesome. Deafheaven are incredible live too.

let me point out that "black metal style vocals" is, actually, "actual singing" :)
They're a texture not a focus which is exactly how it should be with instrumentals this good
DTH SWN yes! Exactly what I was thinking
To me, the vocals are another instrument. Like the distorted guitar, but more human.

I agree. I like this more than the CD. not that the CD is bad, it is just a little bit over-produced.
This sounds even better than the studio version.

When a fawn
Stumbles into the road
Honeydew high
And deep in afterglow
Mind swarming
Mind small
Honeydew high
Transforming the soul
On purple sand verbena
I forgive its delusion
Caress its world view
Super bloom
Shelter canary yellow eyes
Then search to pin the legs
Of the stalking dog
That lends its teeth
To sticky, sad bedlam
War cries quake through lurching light
I bury a blade between its ribs
Bear hug the soft canine frame
Then smear ash
Then smear the ash on its brow
All who have forgotten

To everyone dissing the vocals
1. Gorge actually does sing on this album
2. Read the lyrics. He’s one of the best writers in metal
The guy who did vocals for that also is on "Near". It's Not clarke
redrobotmonkey who is it then boss? I’ve heard from multiple people it’s gorge. I did think it was one of the guitarists at first tho
The guy's name is Ben Chisholm. Don't listen to "people", do better research. Even pitchfork got it wrong. Also his name is George.
