I want to share a tip for when you're away from plants and moss pole plants for 2-3 weeks: Before I leave water everything very thoroughly and wrap the tops and unused portion of the pole with Press n Seal or cling wrap - it helps the moss within the pole retain moisture. It is not very pretty but some could argue that poles aren't pretty to begin with. For the pots, I put them in a clear plastic bag (produce bags, garbage bags etc) and loosely tie a knot over the foliage so there is a bit of air flow but the plants aren't drying out so fast. I went away for 2 1/2 weeks for my honeymoon without a sitter and came back to zero causalities, some of my moss poles were still moist, believe it or not.
This is GREAT advice! I wrapped my monstera dubia's moss pole extension (before I chopped her) in cling film the last time I was away and it worked well, and I will 100% be doing it again! The plastic bags is such a great shout 💚
I do the same and it really works like a charm, small plants I put together in a clear box, bigger get a platic bag over the foliage. the unused top of my mosspole is wrappend in cling film anyway and for vacation I build a big bag out of the plastic foil you use to cover stuff when painting and put that over the mosspole, I also used some wire on top to hold the bag out, so it doesn´t squish the leaves too much
Hello. I also live in a converted attic apartment, so I might be able to help you a bit. The most obvious, is invest in fans. Put one blowing outside in the window, and get a re-circulating fan for inside, at minimum. They may not look attractive, but get very large clear plastic bags. Completely cover your sensitive plants from the top, or at least cover them 3/4 from the bottom to keep the soil and lower leaves' at a consistent temperature. This is especially important to support new growth in very dry hot air. A top layer of ficus quercifolia is a good top dressing. They can also tolerate changes in light and temperature, while they help regulate water through their roots and respiration. I like these better than just pebbles for the same purpose, but both seems to work.
I always failed with ferns until I saw a tip from Nick Pileggi. I put a small amount LECA in the cache pot and fill it with water and put the plant (in it's nursery pot) on top of the LECA. All of my ferns are THRIVING. Your Sarawak is gorgeous, can't wait for updates! Hope everything works out while your away.
Most of my plants live in my office (westfacing with big windows). In summer the temperature is constanty over 30 degrees, during afternoon it climbs to 37 degrees Celsius. I have mainly Calatheas in that room. What I noticed helped them through the heat was keeping a fan running on lowest setting and rotating during the day. At night I opened all windows. The air movement and wind seemed to cool them a bit and they survived through the heat.
Man I wish Pon worked for me. I put a Pothos Snow Queen in it and it doesn't grow at all. I put Oncidiums in it and they don't grow. I put a Syngonium Mottled Mojito in it and it doesn't grow. And I put an Alocasia Frydek variegated in it and it's wilting despite roots look healthy. Idk what everyone is doing but I definitely fail at it 😢 so glad it works for you!
How are your philodendron white and pink princesses doing? I remember you mentioning a while ago that the move was really hard on them, but I don't remember seeing any news about them since. I'm currently having major struggles with my philo white knight and it makes me so sad because I don't know what I'm doing wrong. But the PPP i completely chopped up is propogating so well which is exciting.

Your blue star fern will definitely appreciate a bark type mix, its winter here in Australia and mine a still thriving in a super cold bathroom. if you do get a air conditioner i would recommend a reverse cycle one which means its hot and cold. please do let us know how your plants cope if you end up getting an aircon. looking forward to watching you next video 😊

Holy that Sarawak is impressive!!!!! Get some fans and start circulating the air! My husband gets so annoyed with me on summer bcuz every room in the house has a fan going! But I hate using air conditioning units as they block sun from the windows and then I can’t open the windows for fresh air.
Hi Claire, I transferred my spider plant from soil to a mix of Pon and Leca about 18 months ago and she is loving it. The majority of my houseplants are in Leca and Pon since I mainly grow orchids which are mostly in bark and spagh moss mixtures the less watering I have to do the better. Love your videos and happy growing.
I chopped my little kentia palm back as well when it had major damage from thrips. I left like 5-10 cm at the bottom of each stem and from that point it started growing new leaves again. It will take some time but I think it will bounce back
Claire I have the same problem with my blue star the fronds dry out so fast and new shoots die before they have a chance to grow and I check it daily so I think it’s just a very fussy plant
Another youtuber said the crispy edges was caused by impurities in our tap water and he was having much better results by adding a few drops of standard aquarium water treatment to the water first.

In regard to the Blue Star Fern, I have one potted in pure orchard bark. In summer I water this plant every day and like to give it a good misting for humidity. Ferns really don't like to dry out at all. Love your videos. Look forward to the next one. 💜
My mum nearly killed her spider plant when she moved late last year. She put her in a colder, darker spot and ended up overwatering her, followed by a gnat infestation. She actually looked worse than yours. I managed to safe her quite easily and she's thriving again. I dealt with the gnats by getting a few (albo) cape sundews, which are now starting to flower. Yours will definitely bounce back with the right care.

I've had my Kentia for a similar amount of time, and it's been easy but hasn't done much. Now a few of the older fronds are drying out too, which is not too worrying in itself, but I feel like it should be growing instead by now! 😅 Will see if a repot and soil upgrade helps, but would love to see how you'll save yours!
I've struggled a bit with my blue star fern as well at times, but lately it really has started to thrive. It's just in regular potting soil, but it actually really seems to enjoy the high moisture retention. In my experience it's quite a thirsty plant, so I give it a decent amount on a weekly basis. It's in a relatively dark corner of my room, which probably further helps to keep it from drying out too much. Hope yours will start to do better again too!
First of all. Always enjoy your video's. My down for this week... My sweet alocasia silver dragon scale got root rot, just 3 strans of roots left😢 I bought here at a garden center and she was in a coco pot. I've put here in a decorative pot and forgot that the coco pot holds water... alot! Almost all of her leafs died😭. But I potted here in a normale nursery pot now, so hopefully she'll forgives me. On the other hand, a garden center made a mistake and sold me a philo🪴 that was really expensive with a discount of 95%🫣
Hi, just wanted to say that I have two spider plants in lechuza pon and self-watering pots and they love it. They where a bit neglected and root bound and when I moved them to pon and a bigger pot they exploded in growth. They trippeld in size and grew about 4 baby-stems each in about 8 month, the biggest baby is bigger than when mommy moved to pon :D . I don´t cut the babys off and they are in direct light (have to move them now in summer) so I do have to fill the reservoir 1-2 times a week, but I also now have to up-size them.
Did you do anything to acclimate it into semi-hydro. I have a spider plant in soil needing an up-pot and I'd love to switch out of soil. All of my semi-hydro plants are in LECA.
@@dorindastewart1375 no, I just removed all the old soil and planted it directly into lechuza pon. I used a self-watering pot from lechuza (got it used, otherwise they are sooo epensive, but good quality) with a innerpot and a string as wick. I now have some cheaper self-watering pots from amazon and they work just as good, I definitely prefer pots with a inner pot and either see though or a water gauge. I tried using Leca once and it didn´t work for me, it got moldy and weird and the roots rottet, now I don´t dare trying it again, but pon works great for me. I have all sorts of plants in it and changing more and more into pon+self-watering as it´s so much easier when I go on vacation.
Just a thought with your magnificum, I read somewhere that anthurium have a shelf life and that they need chopping and propping after like 4/5 years? Not sure how true it is but maybe something like that would refresh it?
I have recently had an epic mealybug infestation on my Skeleton Key and Varigated Hoya Compacta. They were in 2 different rooms so I'm trying to figure out how I'm spreading them, thoughts? Also have you had to get rid of moss poles or fabric hangers because of pests? I had to toss the moss covered stick and the twine I used for my SK and just as a precaution ran the macrame hangers through the wash. Wiped all the furniture down too. Also treated all plants in those areas with neem oil and systemic, is that overboard? I'm kind of freaking out lol. 😅

Did you fertilise the varigated frydek? Mine went dormant and I was using fertilizer shortly after transferring to pon

I have a spider plant in Pon and it's absolutely thriving. It's so perky and there's no more brown tips of leaves in sight

My favourite plant store has a MASSIVE variegated alocasia frydek, so it definitely gets pretty big!
I have about 10 Alocasia maharani babies from corms and the ones I put in pon have exploded. It really does seem to be magic for Alocasia!
