Wonderful interview. Because of the extreme weight of the vessel and because the elements were joined together using tree nails, it’s interesting to speculate that the ship might have been built elsewhere, dismantled and reassembled / outfitted at the final resting site.

Great movie, one of my all time favorites. I will have to read the book next. One thing - they seems to be debating whether there was a sail. There may not be evidence of it but there had to be. All the long ships were made with sails, even the trading ship versions.

Tim, I'd love to visit with you myself. I've been interested in archeology since I was very young and you get to be involved in this big stuff. Love your shows. I've watched nearly all of them on RUclips, but only the ones you've posted. Thanks so much for sharing all these with me! Stay safe, Vickie PS looking forward to all the new stuff and I always watch all these interviews.

Thank you so much for this amazing interview.
I have been reading King Hereafter by Dorothy Dunnett and the hedging your bets of Earl Thorfinn and the cusp of pagan/Christian is such a fascinating aspect of that book. ❤

Talking of Rendlesham and science fiction I wonder if the connection at Sutton Hoo in the film could have been in part inspired by the purported 1980 "UFO" incident at Rendlesham. Radar was a work of many hands developing ideas that coalesced in the British radar system in the period leading up WW2.

I wonder whether Raedwald's conversion & burial may have been as much (if not more) a political statement, as a spiritual one? On one hand, you had the die-hard pagans; on the other, the Christian "progressives". Could his actions (and those of his successors) have been meant to placate both factions, and consolidate power?
The parallel with St. Paul might also be illuminating: starting out as an agent against Jewish nationalism,
he attempted a compromise between the Messianic cult and the Gentiles, creating a new religion...
    (Notice: Your Mileage May Vary)

As someone who used to built canoes, I love Viking boats! The shape adds to much to it, eye appeal (unless they are coming at you, full of hairy men with axes...).

  • @thomasborgsmidt9801
    @thomasborgsmidt9801 3 года назад +4

What the simulation of the boat shows is - tell that to Helen - that it is NOT how it was rowed!
Eight rowers is the maximum you can have in competition, as another pair would mean that the stroke would put his oar into the wake of no. 9. vastly inefficient. To make the 20 pairs viable the aft pairs will have to have shorter oars - otherwise they would not dip into still water.
There are some ferries that have a propeller fore and aft. To get maximum efficiency 1/3 of the HP should be used on the fore propeller with 2/3 on the aft - i.e. the real thrust comes from the aft propeller whereas the fore propellers main job is to get the damned water out of the way and thus reduce drag.

I often tend to think of possible answers to things. As for writing Sci-fi, I have an answer. What if the future of ground penetrating radar would be to create a hologram of what is detected under the ground or to create a virtual reality? It would be a great way to teach history! Ok, authors and engineers take it away. I'm neither a writer, nor an engineer.

I want know what was under the hill that White House you showed at first. That is a man made mound and not a recent one. I thought is was going to see Time team not to old guys talking about random stuff.

Hi Glynn, you may have missed the news but we are returning with two new digs in the more traditional format, filmed this September, and to be released in Spring 2022 on this channel. In between developing the bigger headline digs, RUclips gives us an output for sharing additional archaeology content and interviews such as this for those who wish to dig deeper.

I, for one, love these interviews, keep them coming sir! It's been brilliant to 'catch up' with the old favourites from Time Team, and it serves to whet the appetites of we rabid Time Teamers, many of whom are still in a kind of surreal daze of happiness at the prospect of seeing brand new time team in 2022!

"Js" a few days ago expressed a similar sentiment and, for what its worth, my response to him then would be the same as my answer to you now. Crowd funding is not the same as having the resources of a publicly funded television channel behind you. The more we all chip in, the more product we get. I think they deserve a thumbs up for their achievement so far.
