Time Team S11-E05 syndale, kent

- When the invading Roman army swept towards London, history suggests that they must have established a fort stronghold somewhere along the way to oversee supply lines and regroup. But it has never been found.
Now, however, the grounds of a Kent hotel have yielded a wide range of intriguing finds: ditches, ramparts, coins and pottery.
Could this be the missing link in the Roman invasion? Tony Robinson and the Team have just three days to find out whether the Syndale Park Motel is actually home to the first British Roman fort.
When you watch so much Time Team you want your own trowel.
Got one!
Any old trowel will do . 👍👍👍, 😍😍

Off to Home Depot you go!!
Lol so true
This channel is such a comfort during the bad times. Thank you so much for leaving it up.
Roman soldiers, upon finally reaching their 25th year, were allowed to retire. And have farm land. So I wouldn't be surprised if a retired soldier would make "military" style ditches as boundary lines for his land. It would be what he knew how to do, and he would teach his heirs how to do the same thing. It's obvious that at least one multi generational family had that land, or that the original retired soldier farmer passed it on to another retiree. It's too bad that the later farmers and land holders felt that they had to scrape everything Roman out of the way.
If we dont build over roman sites, we'd need to move countries because virtually the whole country has roman stuff like this. Just because something is old, doesnt make it valuable. Look in your rubbish bin, thats basically what they are digging up most of the time. However, history can be preserved, they can bury it, then build on top. Farming does far more damage in fact.
it is very relaxing to watch, and they laugh a lot too!
what a great insight as to the use of the land, makes perfect sense! thank you.
@@christianbuczko1481 Your rubbish bin holds coins worth hundreds of pounds?
@@barnabyaprobert5159 most things in your bin wont be worth much but in a few hundred years it may become valuable.
I would love to share a few pints with Phil. The man is a national treasure.
Stuart is the secret weapon of the show.
I love what he brings to the show. I also feel like Victor Ambrus is under appreciated, and the guy who runs the land mover so delicately!

Tammy Driver Thanks Tammy
God bless Malcolm, with the archetypal anorak voice. Extremely knowledgeable man. Really knows his stuff.
Poor geophys guys! They always do so much, great to see them always
I enjoy TT immensely and appreciate Reijer Zaaijer bringing them to us. The funniest sentence I heard was "at least we are not superannuated old hippies. Love the word and its meaning. Putting it in my must-use vocabulary.
@ 5:25, "...Stuart has a plan of his own..." Stuart's often right on the money! Now, Professor Stuart Ainswoth.
just discovered for the past couple of years he has been running weekend masterclasses in landscape archaeology that anyone can attend. something for the bucket list for sure!
Congratulations to Stuart!! Seriously underestimated him at first. All Success to Him.
He has worked hard for it.
I take exception to the description of Claudius as a doddering half wit. He certainly had a stammer which made it difficult for him to preside over religious rites, which had to be conducted with perfection or you had to start over. However, he managed to survive the murderous reign of Caligula, in which the appearance of being a half wit would be a good survival gambit. However, we know that he wrote a dictionary of Etruscan, which is one of the most lamented of lost books of antiquity. He was likely an introverted scholar, and not well suited to high octane politics, but he seems to have done reasonably well , bar choice of wives.
Agreed, when Guy said that I had to fight the desire to scream. Guy really irritates me, he frequently seems like an arrogant elitist. At the very least, Claudius was an Emperor of Rome while Guy is a legend in his own mind.
Indeed, I’m actually a fan of Claudius- he suffered from pre-conceived notions of ANY fault..even stuttering would alter his perception and add to a ‘legend’ of stupidity and when you study Claudius, he was actually a very smart guy. No Augustus or Marcus Aurelius but really, who is?
Ooooooh! Of all the lost books, that I would love to have, that’s second after the complete poetry of Sappho. Bet the Vatican library has them….
I cannot hear the name Claudius without thinking of (1) The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius, a truly fascinating read; and (2) Derek Jacobi’s devastating portrayal of Claudius in “I, Claudius” from the BBC.
“Fancy a nice dish of sautéed mushrooms, darling?” “N-n-n- n. Oh, ok.”
Absolutely!!!

Coming from Kent myself I found this exceptionally interesting. Thank you for this and all the others, Reijer.
Quite a story - dabbling with complexity and many swerves in direction 👏👏👏
Victor was an amazing artist.
With an amazing life.
And if anyone has been watching Alice Roberts' successor show 'Digging for Britain', that first Roman fort has been found, albeit some years after this show died.
So Paul was right and there was a Roman fort there?
I think that is about the longest trench I've seen so far in any episode. They were really grasping at straws on this one. Still very interesting. Thanks for uploading.
That's what happens whenever Neil Holbrook is in charge
I don't recall seeing Malcolm Lyne anywhere before but wow does he know his stuff!
Oh Boy Phil...the folks on the set are probably used to your humor, but that dig about the 'little guy' was pretty risky on TV. And I sure loved Tony's rapid dig back atcha!
This was made before all the snowflakes were around...
Oh ffs shut up... jesus you would think we live in a police state
Wow Phil! "It's that first hole ain't it." You just rip me to pieces.
not the carinated girth of a biconical! Tony's best joke ever.
I need to bookmark the shows where Neil has a nice quiet dig where everything goes as expected. Whenever I see him I think 'this is going to be one of those crazy episodes'.
This one bothers me. Either I'm missing something, or they've dismissed the fort idea way too easily here. They cut trenches either side of Paul's ditches expecting the ditches to carry straight on, not even considering the ditches might have turned. There's no reason to assume an early fort would have had a strict rectangular or playing card shape.
The ditch run either side of Paul's trenches could also have been quarried away either by ridge and furrow or later landscaping. Absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence.
Wonder what a Covid-19 dig would look like! Cracking show!
Every single time I watch an episode where Neil is the site director instead of Mick, nothing goes to plan and it always ends in disappointment.
Neil sucks
I don't agree with Phil's assessment of the Roman spade - 'poorly designed'. It seems to be a well designed turfing iron or turf spade. They are still used today. Well-sharpened, it may also have doubled as a handy back-up weapon much as spades were used in WW1 for close-quarters trench combat.
It is not a shovel though which is what Phil was presumably mainly using it as. Roman soldiers may have used wicker baskets instead for shovelling loose soil.
yes it does resemble a bulldog spade, sharpened it was a vicious weapon
23:52 "At least we're not a superannuated old hippie!" That's telling him, Phil.
"not the carrigated girth of a biconical!"

Oi! Watch cher language! There's laydies 'round 'ere!
Despite their not having found a fort it was still a fun dig to watch! Its good to see a common mans farm instead of the fancy villa or Military installation.
It was fun seeing Tony being systematically humbled as the site went from Roman fort to fancy villa to common man's farm-stead. You could tell he hated it every time he had to concede his "lofty" and some-what "snobbishly posh attitude." Everyone likes great finds but the common farmer plays a large part in history. We just don't hear much about them because peasant farmers don't make very interesting Telly in some people's minds. Pity!
Most important thing learned from this episode: Never ever EVER give Tony a " for dummies" pamphlet!
I worked on Hardrians Wall with Tony Wilmott, living out of Vindolanda fort. Theres even a statue of him in the museum there.
I'm not a fan of Neil Holbrook but maybe we were just spoilt by Prof. Mick. R.I.P.
i like neil. i see him laughing at himself on many occasions.
@@amel6206 probably because everyone else does constantly. Hes just not good at this type timeteam excavation. He panics far too much, and confuses everything. I think he was promoted beyond his abilities when hes put in charge of this program.

You'll have to look it up yourself I'm afraid.
Usually gives me the urge for fish or poultry and a tankard of mead or ale watching this. Hopefully when they plan to build on land they do surveys and the actual digging for the foundations would discover any ancient items or sites to excavate more? Did the hotel owner and staff get nervous when the team arrived and possibly booked rooms for the duration?
Hotel Reception: Would you like a single or a double room Mr Robinson?
Mr Robinson Can I get back to you on that later today please. By the way we need to dig up your car park and other areas in the next few days.
Hotel Reception: I'll just call the manager sir, Karen!!
would love to find some old coins. Just one good Roman coin is all I would want.
+Richard I know it's not the same, but you could buy (a bronze) one for very little money!
Richard.... for 20 bucks you can get a pile of roman bronze....or for more cash you can get a silver roman dinarii.
I got two dinarii for my meagre coin collection.

Watch out though. You have to report a hoard. Seems unfair but I do understand also.
ha, Victor getting carried away by his imagination, I love it!
Man..they trenched the bejesus out of that field....
I realize this is a little late - (great show, by the way) but I don't think that's a scale weight - it looks like a plumb bob to me. I've got one almost exactly like it. When you hit on the perfect shape for something it stands to reason that it should remain the same for damned near forever.
The natives must have crapped their loincloths when they saw those Roman Elephants.
That was my immediate thought as well! 😂
Ancient shock and awe that was LOL
Or maybe they killed and ate them like their ancestors did with the mammoths.
I wish the ad breaks were tis long on TV
anyone ever counted or measured how many km or miles -geofiz- walked during the making of all those episodes? And VICTOR was making those incredible drawings. who was going to keep them? and where are they now? shown as part of the - finds - at the local museum?
Well, at least the well was pretty swell.
This is not very much to the subject of this show whatsoever, but I've always been admiring how wonderful hair does Carenza have, so healthy, thick and luscious. What would I give to have the hair of that quality, regardless of the colour.
Worms and moles get back. Time Team,s about to attack!

"The Carinated girth of a biconical." Sounds like a potions ingredient from Harry Potter doesn't it?
You're not weird Tony you're just very averted!
He's not weird, he's "limited edition"
If it was a temporary Roman camp, there wouldn't be much left to find. Ditches and a handful of small items broken and dropped or lost.
If Francis was at that dig he would be saying it is all ritual.
JETWTF : Remember when archaeologist use the terms "Ritual or ceremonial" what they are actually saying is I have no idea.
On a different note here.. have you found much finds from the Celtics world? I understand they were a rich tribe??
The thing that i get from most of these shows is that the Romans must have had holes in their change purses ?
Thanks for posting
I'm never confident with Neil in charge.
Paul! keep yer head down and keep digging!
Lol!! Anytime I see Neil or Francis my guy says it's going to be an episode of everyone wondering around in circles and everything was for ritual purposes. God bless them both, lol...
Neil was promoted beyond his abilities. He had no idea what so ever how to run a timeteam dig.
Flippin Neil and his Benny Hill voice, I always cringe when I realize he's on the case.
I’m the same I cringe when I see him and I find I can’t watch the episode because he just ruins it for me
Tony called Phil what kind of old hippy? Lol
Superannuated
What about the Roman fort at Pevensey in East Sussex? Thats in the south east. Sp clearly there are other Roman forts.
Super annuated old hippies.... Ziinnngggg! Baldrick strikes back ! ...and up...since hes so short.
Trivia! Ironic as it is, since he nearly never did any of the actual digging, how often was Tony "frustrated" at the progress or lack of results during the run of this series?
It‘s a cold day...and then there‘s Phil in a roman costume with very little coverage in the nether regions...
Poor sweet Phil. They should have done this one a few years earlier when he was in better shape. Having the poor guy out there in the cold in that little tunic was just cruel.
The Time Team Team have seen more of Britain than any other group on the planet. What I am sure astounds our foreign viewers is the sheer space of the UK countryside.
It does. And coming from the US, extremely jealous of the history. Although I suppose in a way, it's our history as well.
What happened to the elephants?
Nobody knows, is the honest answer. I suspect they were actually brought over for their sheer 'shock and awe' value: for someone who's never seen an animal bigger than a large bull, an elephant would have been a terrifying sight. And I suspect they had special handlers, and if, as with horse handlers, they bonded with the animals, they probably eventually went back to Europe. At least, I'm not aware that any elephant bones have been found in 1st century contexts in Britain (although it would be nice to be proved wrong!)
@@vincerussett7922 If only Time Team were still around to investigate!
They didn't like the climate so they all drank redbulls, grew wings and flew off home and lived happily ever after. And that's the way that story went.
So, where was the first original Roman fort? It has to be somewhere in an as yet, undisclosed location.
In 1999 a roman fort was discovered in Syndale, Kent near NEAR FAVERSHAM
If John and Stewart do not find something It is not there.I see them win the contest for years.
these later programs without Mic seem as though they need an extra day or two to do the same work.
can someone tell me what season the new time team programs started on youtube as i want to watch from the start of this
I believe the new ones are labelled as Series 21.
Wonder if they’d thought to run the geo equipment down in the trenches, as it seems the features were beyond the depth they could get to at the time
Wait...the Romans brought elephants to invade Britain?! I didn't know that.
Wow, the ships that the Romans used must have been quite big because of the elephants they took with them. Just wondering what happened to the elephants after they arrived in Britain.
Trench 1 lat 51.3138 long 0.8591 date 12/2003 on Google Earth
Are you certain it's an invasion & not a trading center set up as a fort? Francis did a 3 hr special challenging the invasion theories.
Malcom rules!!
The problem with english is that they do not see that there was already trade between mainland and england before roman times. Especially between Rhineland and england. This trade would be more north. Between germanic groeps and keltic groeps.
The invasion of romans is because of these trade-routes they were interested.
Shortest way for romans was the southernroute.
they should do a whole show on phil's hair.
They'd probably find a few flint chips.
A hypothesis, for which I freely admit I have no evidence at all: could Roman soldiers have begun to establish a fort, then been driven away in an attack by hostile tribes before finishing the task? It seems possible that might have happened, perhaps elsewhere if not here. They've said that some soldiers dug while others kept guard, but I've never heard if their guard was always successful.
Not in Southern England.
They had already established trading relationships in Southern England with local tribes. Some of which were friendly enough with the Romans to invite them in. One of the impetus for the invasion.
Even Phil, normally the manly type, looks a proper girl's blouse in that Roman kit!
You wouldn't have said that to a bunch of Roman squaddies and got away with it... ;-)
Ten years earlier he would have looked so much better in that rig. Still love him anyway.
No answer is an answer.
Brilliant
Very interesting
Syndale or Sincdale. Is there knowledge of the older name of Syndale?
28:00 ... a sliding screen switch using the edge of the helicopter door!!
I suspect the fort was redesigned over time as more troops arrived with more supplies. This would fill ditches with later finds and wouldn't preclude an original fort there that was "demolished' in the remodel.
That dress on Phil? Phil or frilly?😂😂😂
A Roman soldier's tunic is not a dress.
Dirty ditches!
Dirty ditches are done dirt cheap! LOL;)
.... btw Stewart gets things going and Niel defers to his knowledge repeatedly ... where's Tony? .. his voice but little camera time
nickrich56 that's because Neil's a twat!!

I never did understand why Dr Chris Gaffney, geophysicist, 31:3-0, who was the original geo phys guy, got pushed aside in favor of John.
He had/still has an extensive career. He was pretty busy. John was his business partner. I doubt he was pushed out.
Many of the consultants have other primary jobs.
I believe they all have primary jobs. For me, that still doesn't explain why Chris was not featured more.

2 possible reasons for Neil's meeting. 1 They kicked him out so they could change everything and save the episode (it worked). 2 He is employed by Developers for his amazing ability to never find anything, to cut down on archaeologic expenses

Never a good sign when Neil shows up. He ruins whatever he touches.
The title of this episode was "The Roman Fort That Wasn't There", so I wonder how it is Neil's fault for not finding a fort that most likely wasn't there : -).
